Tipperary Hill or Capitol Hill? Let's take a visit to Coleman's ‘brother' bar in Washington, D.C.

WASHINGTON, DC (WSYR-TV) — Walking into the Dubliner on Capitol Hill, Central New Yorkers will see something from Tipperary Hill: an upside-down traffic light with the green on top. Those not familiar with the 50-year-old pub are certainly familiar with its founding family. 'My father opened Coleman's in April 1933,' Danny Coleman told me as we sat at his reserved table by the door. Danny Coleman began pouring pints at his dad's Syracuse saloon nearly 75 years ago. He recalled his decision to move from Central New York: 'After I got out of the Army, I asked, 'What do you think: Syracuse or Washington?' Washington lost, and they got me.' It was a win because each city got a young Coleman brother and a bar. Danny opened The Dubliner, and Peter's son, Peter, took over Coleman's. 'My brother was like my best friend,' said Danny. Peter died in 2021. 'I used to talk to him at least once or twice a week. I don't know who was more full of crap, him or me.' Full of character is more accurate. Danny's proximity to power had him pouring to patrons who were power players. Tip O'Neill, a beloved Speaker of the House of Representatives in the 1970s and 1980s, was a regular. A painted portrait of Speaker O'Neill, similar to the art seen at Coleman's, hangs in The Dubliner's main bar next to a similar portrait of Danny. Within the walls, there are no labels like Republican or Democrat. Everyone is Irish. Danny told the story of when President Barack Obama visited The Dubliner for a high-profile St. Patrick's Day celebration. Danny used a well-crafted joke seemingly told before, 'Oh, Mr. President, what are you doing? Looking for your apostrophe? O'Bama?' he added a laugh in Irish brogue. Danny is now considered the founding father. Each of his children worked at The Dubliner at some point. His son, Gavin, is the president of the business that now includes other bars. Danny's nephew, also Daniel, is the general manager of The Dubliner. Daniel's dad was Peter. The Coleman charm is alive and well on both Tipperary Hill and Capitol Hill. Green Beer Sunday steps off at Coleman's on Tipp Hill

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Thousands of people ventured out to Coleman's Authentic Irish Pub on Sunday, February 23 to celebrate Green Beer Sunday. The annual event is Syracuse's unofficial start of St. Patrick's Day season. 'We just know it's a day of drinking and having fun and lots of green beer,' said Taryn Leonard of Central New York. Green Beer Sunday is a tradition that's been happening for more than 50 years. 'Every year it just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It's amazing. We are so grateful for everybody's support, showing up Sunday afternoon to hang out in the parking lot. It's the best,' said Dennis Coleman, owner of Coleman's Authentic Irish Pub. The celebrations stepping off Sunday afternoon, with thousands of people flooding to Coleman's on Tipp Hill, including Ryan Reynolds. 'I like the Irish music. I like the Green Beer and just being in an Irish bar,' said Reynolds. Sunday's celebrations included a tiny parade, live music and more. The event is a long-standing tradition for many people. But for others, they got their first taste of Green Beer Sunday. 'This is our first time. Very excited. A family friend told us about it. We had to check it out,' said Corrinna Avery of Central New York. Hoping for another lucky, Irish season! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
