WA hospitality businesses still under pressure amid weak consumer demand: CreditorWatch

Nearly 10 per cent of WA hospitality businesses have shut in the past year, according to new data, as they bear the brunt of weak consumer demand amid persistent cost-of-living pressures. Analysts at CreditorWatch said the double whammy hit of rising costs and dampened demand had led to 9.6 per cent of hospitality businesses across Australia to close their doors in the past 12 months. Hospitality businesses in South Australia were the hardest hit, with the State having a closure rate of 10.8 per cent. It was followed by Queensland, at 10 per cent, and Victoria, at 9.9 per cent. WA had a closure rate of 8.6 per cent, while Tasmania had the lowest at 6.4 per cent. CreditorWatch chief economist Ivan Colhoun said businesses exposed to discretionary spending experienced the worst of both worlds, with their costs under pressure and customers' demand weakened. He said hospitality businesses were particularly vulnerable. 'First, and most significantly, they are exposed to the vagaries of discretionary spending,' Mr Colhoun said. 'So, when households feel the pinch from interest rate rises and price increases, they typically spend less at places like cafes, restaurants, bars and pubs. 'On top of that, you have the business cost increases in areas such as wages, electricity, insurance and food and alcohol.' The report, to be released on Thursday, said a continuing rise in late payments by companies supported the Reserve Bank's recent decision to cut interest rates as inflation pressures moderate. Over the past 12 months, Australian businesses recorded payments that were an average of 9.58 days past due.
