Michigan State hockey claims top spot in early power rankings for 2025-26 season
Michigan State hockey claims top spot in early power rankings for 2025-26 season It's the NEVER Too Early 2025-26 NCAA Hockey Power Rankings! MUCH will change over the summer as some more additions/subtractions become finalized before we start to see some final rosters released by the teams... Who do YOU think is too high, low, and or missing?!?! 🤔 Let's… — College Puck NXT (@CollegePuckNXT) May 27, 2025 Michigan State hockey was No. 1 in the country for most of this past season and one analyst thinks they'll start next season with that top spot too. College Puck NXT released a "never too early" set of college hockey power rankings for next season, and the Spartans were right at the top of their list. Michigan State just edged out Boston University and Western Michigan for the No. 1 spot in their top 10 rankings poll. From the Big Ten, rival Michigan, Penn State and Minnesota were also included in the rankings. Penn State came in at No. 5, Michigan at No. 8 and Minnesota at No. 10. The Spartans return a number of key players off last year's Big Ten title winning squad. Hobey Baker Award winner Isaac Howard is expected back for another season at Michigan State, and so is star goaltender Trey Augustine. Those two alone will raise the ceiling for what Michigan State can achieve next year. MSU hockey considered lock for No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament
Michigan State hockey is considered a lock to get a No. 1 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, and should be stationed close to home for their first weekend game(s). College Puck NXT released an updated batch of college hockey bracketology on Wednesday, which stated the Spartans are considered a lock for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They also have the Spartans positioned to open the tournament in Toledo -- this isn't necessarily a lock but I don't see how that could possibly change at this time in the season. Michigan State is projected to face No. 4 seed Holy Cross in the first round of the tournament, and would then face the winner of No. 2 seed UConn and No. 3 seed Denver should they advance. One interesting note from College Puck NXT is that there's a possibility that the Spartans could be matched up with rival Michigan in the first round of the tournament should the Big Ten land five or more teams in the field. As of right now, that is the case with Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State and Minnesota also projected to be dancing this year. Advertisement As of right now, College Puck NXT has the Wolverines facing off with No. 1 seed Boston College in the Manchester Region. But certainly, this is something to keep an eye on. As Spartans faithful will remember, Michigan State was knocked out of the NCAA Tournament by Michigan in the second round last year. Check out the full bracket projection from College Puck NXT in the post below. The official NCAA Tournament bracket will be released on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. The show will be televised on ESPNU.
