Farmer-built levee breaks along U.S. 231

OWENSBORO, Ky. (WEHT) — Daviess County officials are reassuring the community not to worry after a levee built along U.S. 231 broke from flooding. It's located just past College View Middle School. The Daviess County Sheriff's office says the levee was built by a farmer, and not the county. Officials says the water is draining into surrounding farmland. The road remains open and unaffected. Officials say if conditions worsen, a plan is already in place. 'Having spoken with several county officials, the determinations being made is that it was very unlikely that particular event would cause Highway 231 to be affected. We'll get the word out, and we'll put up barricades. We'll treat it just like any other flooded roadway,' says Sheriff Brad Youngman of the Daviess County Sheriff's Office. The Daviess County Sheriff's Office says they will continue to closely monitor the roadway. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The student faces felony charges of unlawful possession of a weapon on school grounds. Daviess County Attorney John Burlew says the point is to deter future occurrences. 'It can create chaos. It could get you killed…because what if you pull it out and a school resource officer thinks that's a real firearm?,' says Burlew. Daviess County Public Schools reassured families that the student responsible would face consequences for having an item on school property that could provoke fear, harm, distraction and concern. Over the weekend, a student made a social media post showing what appeared to be a weapon in their possession in a backpack while at school. Two others are facing misdemeanor charges. 'One was charged with disorderly conduct…that's for the allegation of posting that picture on social media that created chaos. The other individual is charged with complicity to possess a weapon on school property, because the allegation is that individual provided that item to the [student],' says Burlew. In less than 10 days, all three students will be interviewed to determine what happens next. 'Even if it doesn't go to court, there's still consequences. It doesn't just get dropped it. The Court Designated Worker's Office has a diversion process that they [may] go through,' says Burlew. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
