How Their Love Story Began 2 / 8 It all started in 1975, when Charlotte Von Schedvin, a tourist from Sweden, visited Delhi and saw PK's portraits at Connaught Place. Curious and impressed, she asked him to draw her — and that was the beginning of their unique bond. Who is Pradyumna Kumar Mahanandia? 3 / 8 Born into a Dalit family in a small village in Odisha, India, PK faced discrimination from a young age. Despite the challenges, he pursued art and earned a spot at the College of Art, Delhi, where he became famous for sketching portraits in just 10 minutes. They Fell in Love — But Had to Part 4 / 8 Soon, love blossomed between PK and Charlotte. They got married in India, but Charlotte had to return to Sweden while PK stayed back to finish his studies. The two kept in touch through heartfelt letters. Cycling 6,000 KM for Love 5 / 8 In January 1977, after a year apart, PK wanted to reunite with Charlotte — but he couldn't afford a plane ticket. So, he sold everything he owned, bought a secondhand bicycle, and set off on a 6,000-kilometer journey from India to Sweden. He cycled 70 km (44 miles) every day for nearly five months. Crossing Borders and Battling Hardship 6 / 8 His journey took him across Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, and Turkey. Along the way, his bicycle broke down several times, and there were days when he had nothing to eat. But nothing could break his spirit. A Final Reunion in Europe 7 / 8 On May 28, after passing through Istanbul and Vienna, PK finally reached Europe. He then boarded a train to Gothenburg, Sweden, where he was reunited with Charlotte. The couple officially married in Sweden and have since built a life together. Where Are They Now? 8 / 8 Today, PK and Charlotte live in Sweden with their two children. Rare and highly collectable Wendy Ramshaw piece for sale at Morningside jewellers
Edinburgh jeweller Sarah Hutchison, artist and owner of SH Jewellery in the city's Morningside area, this week shared for sale a rare and highly collectable Wendy Ramshaw piece: A two-set ring stack, complete with stand, comprising a silver band with black enamel and gold flecks, and a gold 'spear' two-band ring. Originally purchased from the Lesley Crazy gallery in Clerkenwell, London, in 2013, the ring stack is in fantastic condition, and the addition of the stand – made up of two clear Perspex parts that screw together perfectly – means that the rare and beautiful piece can be admired in its full glory even when not being worn. In the autumn of 2023, established Edinburgh jeweller Sarah Hutchison, whose SH Jewellery has adorned the capital's crown since 2011, decided to go out on a limb and establish a preloved arm of her thriving business. Initially run solely on Instagram at @sh_chance_to_sparkle, it has gone from strength to strength in under two years, with more than 1200 pieces of contemporary handmade jewellery listed, and more than 75% of those already finding new homes. Jewellery on display, SHJ Gallery, credit Moments by Alexandra and Wendy Ramshaw piece The preloved collection not only gives beautiful, contemporary handmade pieces of unworn jewellery a second chance to be shown-off and loved, but also helps to address the problem of sustainability in the jewellery industry, all while offering enthusiasts unique pieces at much-reduced prices. Such has been the success of the preloved initiative that Sarah now devotes time each week to adding to the collection on her website here, and interest from media, designers and customers alike has been non-stop. Sarah Hutchison, who is originally from East Lothian and who studied at Edinburgh's College of Art before moving to London to run an exclusive gallery, returning more than a decade ago to her native city of Edinburgh, said: 'The interest and enthusiasm have just been staggering, and what I love most, I think, is the range of pieces that come through the door seeking new homes. If you check out the Instagram page, you'll see pairs of hand-crafted earrings for under £20, right up to platinum and gold pieces with precious stones running into four figures. 'I get pieces from notable names in the jewellery world like Ruth Tomlinson and Graeme McColm, and highly collectible pieces from the likes of Jack Cunningham – and now Wendy Ramshaw — all sold alongside pieces from local makers and artists at really accessible prices. 'The Wendy Ramshaw ring was just the icing on the cake, and it's the second Wendy Ramshaw I've offered for sale this month, in fact – but this one includes the Perspex stand, which makes it just that little bit more iconic. 'Usually pieces like this would only come up via auction houses, so I see it as a real endorsement of the preloved project that collectors are recognising the draw of it: getting directly to passionate, knowledgeable, reliable buyers without the need to go to auction. I never in my wildest dreams thought I'd be selling a Wendy Ramshaw via my preloved page, let alone two! I'm still absolutely buzzing!'
