KFC Japan cooking up new yuzu Japanese citrus katsu sandwiches for summer
Yuzu and shichimi add distinctive delicious Japanese flavors to the fried chicken house from Kentucky. Kentucky Fried Chicken Japan isn't shy about leaning just as heavily into the second geographic part of its name as it does the first. So while sure, they're happy to hook you up with a bucket of the Colonel's original-recipe fried chicken, they also regularly offer items that feature Japanese culinary creativity, and that's what's on the way with a new sandwich that's joining the KFC Japan menu: the Yuzu Shichimi Wafu Chicken Katsu Burger. We've got a lot to chew on linguistically there, so let's start at the beginning. Yuzu (pictured above) is a kind of Japanese citrus fruit that's somewhere between a lemon and a lime, but with a sharper finish to its flavor profile that better balances its sweet and tart notes. Shichimi (seen below) is a mixed chili pepper seasoning which often contains powdered orange peel, giving it a flavorful spiciness with a faintly citrusy impression. Meanwhile, wafu is a classical way of saying 'Japanese-style,' alluding to the teriyaki sauce that spread all across the chicken cutlet ('katsu'). That cutlet gets placed between whole-wheat buns, topped with shredded cabbage (the customary accompaniment for cutlets in Japan), and finished with a generous dollop of yuzu-juice and shichimi-infused mayonnaise sauce. The Yuzu Shichimi Wafu Chicken Katsu Burger can be had by itself for 490 yen (US$3.40), as part of a set with a medium drink and small order of fries for 900 yen, or, if you can't imagine going into KFC and not getting some straight-up fried chicken, as a combo with the drink, fries, and a piece of Original Recipe for 1,200 yen (both of the combos can be had for 160 yen less as lunch sets, offered between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.). Appearing alongside the Yuzu Shichimi Wafu Chicken Katsu Burger on the menu is a regular Wafu Chicken Katsu Burger with conventional mayonnaise, for which a la carte and combo prices are all 50 yen less. Both sandwiches are on sale as of June 4 at KFC branches across Japan and will be available for a limited time. Former station commander of Port Alfred sentenced for fraud
A policewoman and former station commander of Port Alfred has been convicted and sentenced on two counts of fraud. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said Colonel Ncamisa Donkrag had previously pleaded guilty to defrauding the South African Police Service (SAPS), on two separate occasions, and was subsequently sentenced at the Port Alfred Regional Court on Friday. The court combined the two charges for the purpose of sentence. Both incidents relate to Donkrag fraudulently claiming for travel reimbursements. Donkrag was sentenced to five years imprisonment, wholly suspended for a period of five years on condition that she is not convicted of theft or fraud committed during the period of suspension. She was also ordered to repay the SAPS, a total amount of R12,767.80. "On the first incident, she pretended that she traveled using her private vehicle in May 2022 from Port Alfred to Port Edward, eMaxesibeni (Mount Ayliff) , Mzamba, the Wild Coast and back to Port Alfred, and was reimbursed for the trip an amount of R 8,062.58. "On the second occasion, she pretended that in September 2022, she traveled from Port Alfred to respectively Zweltsha, Addo and back to Port Alfred. "She was again reimbursed for the trip an amount of R 4 705.25," Nkohli said. The court combined the two counts for the purpose of sentence. The accused was sentenced to five years imprisonment, wholly suspended for a period of five years on condition that she is not convicted of theft or fraud committed during the period of suspension. She was also ordered to compensate the South African Police Service, a total amount of R12 767.80. Acting Sarah Baartman District Commissioner, Brigadier Osagran Naidoo said the sentence will serve as a deterrent to anyone who may be tempted to commit similar offences. "Such an outcome reflects that no matter what position one holds in the SAPS, nobody is above the law. "SAPS is expecting all its employees to always serve with diligence, and honour. "The investigative work by the Anti-Corruption Unit is commendable, and we urge members to continue with their work to fight against crime crimes such as fraud and corruption," Naidoo said. Priscilla Presley honored for contributions to Tennessee music
Priscilla Presley received Tennessee's highest civilian honor Monday in recognition of her efforts to preserve the state's rich musical legacy. Why it matters: Priscilla Presley, who was married to Elvis Presley, was pivotal in preserving his Graceland home and making it a must-see destination for generations of music lovers. Graceland helped cement Memphis' reputation as the birthplace of rock 'n' roll. The big picture: Presley, 79, has also been a prominent supporter of Memphis' Rock 'n' Soul Museum, which also chronicles the city's role as a major hub for blues and soul music. She is currently advocating to relocate and expand the museum. State of play: Presley received Colonel Aide de Camp award from Gov. Bill Lee and members of the General Assembly at the Tennessee Capitol. Elvis Presley received the same honor in 1961.
