World War II veteran celebrates 100th birthday with Frederick community
FREDERICK, Md. () — A World War II veteran in western Maryland celebrated his 100th birthday on Wednesday.
Staff Sgt. Melvin Hurwitz piloted B-17 bombers over Europe during the war. He never thought he would celebrate his 20th birthday, much less his 100th.

Hurwitz celebrated the major milestone with family, friends and community well-wishers at Colonial Jewelers in the heart of downtown Frederick, a business he moved to town from Westminster.
'I feel good,' Hurwitz said. 'I take life in moderation and not too seriously. I believe we do unto others as you would do for yourself.'
Hurwitz's niece, Sarah Hurwitz Robey, said they feel fortunate to have him in their family.
'We cherish his wit and his stories and everything that he shares with the family,' she said.
Last year, Hurwitz participated in the 80th anniversary observance of D-Day in France.
