Former Colorado GOP vice chair challenges Jeff Hurd in 2026 race for Congress
Hope Scheppelman, who is running in the Republican primary to represent Colorado's 3rd Congressional District, is seen at left standing with President Donald Trump in a photo from 2024 on the homepage of the Colorado Republican Party's website. (Colorado Newsline) Hope Scheppelman, former vice chair of the Colorado Republican Party, is challenging U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd in the 2026 race to represent Colorado's 3rd Congressional District. Scheppelman, of Bayfield, said Hurd 'tricked and lied to CD3 voters last year' and has since 'exposed himself as just another liberal elitist who is dead set against President (Donald) Trump and the millions of MAGA citizens like me' in a press release announcing her candidacy. She is a U.S. Navy veteran and former health care professional and business owner. SUBSCRIBE: GET THE MORNING HEADLINES DELIVERED TO YOUR INBOX Hurd, a Grand Junction Republican who started his first term in Congress in January, won voters in the district by promising 'a different style' from his predecessor, U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, a Windsor Republican and MAGA provocateur who moved districts after she was reelected by under 600 votes in 2022 and now represents the 4th Congressional District. Hurd has been one of the more moderate Republicans in Congress since he took office. 'When the people of CD3 learn what Jeff Hurd has really been up to in D.C., I know they will choose a real conservative who will fight for them and our real-world local interests, not the sold-out liberal elitists in BOTH parties who are thrilled with Hurd's betrayal of our common sense values,' Scheppelman said. The press release announcing Scheppelman's run said Hurd earned a primary from the MAGA wing of Colorado's GOP. She was vice chair of the Colorado Republican Party under former chair Dave Williams, who broke party norms by endorsing candidates in primary elections across the state, favoring many MAGA Republicans who lost their races. A group of Republicans attempted to oust Williams and other party leaders, but that effort was halted by the courts. Party members voted Scheppelman out as vice chair after one term in the position. If elected to Congress, Scheppelman's campaign website says she would prioritize ending the fentanyl crisis and securing the border; defending agriculture, water rights and landowners; improving rural health care, Medicare and Medicaid; restoring American energy independence; empowering parents and reforming education; defending constitutional rights and 'Western values'; honoring and supporting veterans; and strengthening rural economies and small business growth. The 3rd District encompasses the Western Slope and the southwest corner of the state, sweeping east to include Pueblo, Otero and Las Animas counties. Hurd has already raised over $700,000 for his reelection campaign. Two Democrats, Alex Kelloff and Kyle Doster, have also filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission declaring their run for the seat in the Democratic primary. Party primary elections in Colorado will take place in June 2026. SUPPORT: YOU MAKE OUR WORK POSSIBLE

Brita Horn elected Colorado GOP Chair on ‘unify the party' platform amid year of infighting
DENVER (KDVR) — The Colorado Republican Party has a new chairperson after the party elected former county treasurer and volunteer fire chief Brita Horn to the role, following a year of infighting related to the previous party chair. Horn, who served as Routt County treasurer from 2012 to 2018 and is currently the chief of the Rock Creek Volunteer Fire Department, thanked her team and supporters for their 'dedication, hard work, and belief in our vision' in a Facebook post Sunday morning. Her election comes as then-Colorado GOP chair Dave Williams faced numerous calls for his removal last year after sending an email from the state party stating that 'God hates flags,' and then posting to X that Americans should 'Burn all the #pride flags this June.' On her website, Horn said the state GOP 'needs a rescue plan, and it needs it now.' 'The Colorado GOP is in trouble,' she said. 'Our state party is out of funds and lacks a clear strategy to win elections. But I'm not one to run from challenges. As a long-time political activist AND a fire chief, I've faced countless emergencies head-on, saving lives, protecting our community, all while defending our rights from an overreaching Democrat-controlled government.' Trump says he's considering ways to serve a third term The Colorado Democratic Party on Saturday responded to the election, saying it still 'promises to exacerbate the issues facing their Party following years of lawsuits, frustration, and national embarrassment.' Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib called Horn the 'perfect fit' for the current state of U.S. politics under President Donald Trump. 'Donald Trump demands that the Chair of the Colorado GOP bends the knee and puts Coloradans last in service of his agenda to jack up costs, make a joke of our veterans, gut Medicaid, and force you to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. It's no surprise that the Colorado GOP elected Brita Horn — best known for using her government job to extract political favors and cost Routt County millions of dollars through her failed job as treasurer — to their top leadership spot. She's a perfect fit for the new age of corruption that Trump requires of his puppets.' Colorado Democratic Party Chair Shad Murib Democrats reject advice to 'play dead,' vow hard fight against Trump's agenda Among Horn's platform priorities for her first 100 days are to 'unify the party,' strengthen county parties, election integrity, fundraising and financial integrity, candidate recruitment and voter registration. Horn's plan, according to her website, is to elect more republicans after 18 seats were left unchallenged last cycle, grow the party and fundraise to win. 'To succeed, we must adapt, pivot, and overcome any obstacles,' she said on her website. 'It is up to each and every one of us to get the Republican candidates across the finish line.' GOP fundraiser, protest held at Phil Long Music Hall
(COLORADO SPRINGS) — After being moved from its original location over protest concerns, an annual fundraiser for the Colorado Republican Party was held Friday, March 28 at Phil Long Music Hall, with protesters showing up in force to denounce former Trump advisor Steve Bannon. The Colorado GOP's annual Centennial Dinner was originally scheduled at The Antlers Hotel in Downtown Colorado Springs, but was moved to Phil Long Music Hall due to protest concerns. Leading up to the event, activists online had called the event a 'white supremacy gathering,' after Bannon was accused of performing a Nazi salute at the Conservative Political Action Conference in February. The new venue came with added security from the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD), though protesters came out in force to make their displeasure with Bannon's presence in Colorado Springs known. Several activist groups including the Colorado Springs People's Coalition (CSPC) and No Small Acts organized the protests, 'to fight against fascism' and denounce 'reactionary policies' implemented by the Trump Administration. 'I think having someone like Stephen Bannon representing them is a big mistake,' said Mary, a member of No Small Acts. Also present at the event on Friday were counter protesters, some of which were circling the building in trucks and flying Trump flags. Steve Bannon has denied being a white nationalist, and said his alleged Nazi salute was simply a wave. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
