CSP launches Give Me a ‘Brake' promoting safe driving around wildlife
MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) – As peak calving season for elk rolls around this June and July, the Colorado State Patrol is issuing and enforcement and education campaign titled, Give Me a 'Brake,' to support the reduction of collisions between wildlife and vehicles. In 2024, animal-involved crashes made for the third-most common crash factor, state troopers investigated over 3,500 of them. 96% of those collisions caused property damage only for the motorist, but often, the animals wouldn't survive. 'Highway 74 in Evergreen, like so many picturesque areas of Colorado, is an example of a roadway that sees many wildlife crossings,' said Col. Matthew Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. 'We want to warn drivers to slow their speeds and stay alert during this high activity season for new animals traveling with their mothers.' CSP will be conducting weekly enforcement this month down Highway 74 to keep speeds in check and spread knowledge about spotting wildlife and driving around them. Besides the safety of animals and drivers, these crashes can be quite costly. They cause over a billion dollars in insurance payout yearly, according to the Rocky Mountain Insurance Information Association, with the average cost of property damage being over three grand. Here are some tips from CSP and its Wild Eyes Program: Scan roads (or shoulders) for movement, eye shine Use bright lights at night when safe and flash lights at oncoming cars to warn of wildlife on the road Do not honk at wildlife in/near road Stop for wildlife in road/use hazard lights Don't exceed the speed limit If you are involved in a crash with wildlife, CSP wants you to call 911, and if you witness distressed wildlife from potentially being involved in a crash, call CSP. (FREMONT COUNTY, Colo.) — The fatal crash on Colorado Highway 115 near Florence on Sunday, June 1, was caused when a motorcyclist was unable to navigate a curve and went over the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, hitting two vehicles, according to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP). RELATED STORY: UPDATE: CO-115 reopened near Florence after fatal crash CSP reported that on Sunday, around noon, a Harley-Davidson motorcycle with one person riding was driving eastbound on Hwy 115. As the motorcycle was entering a right curve in the road near Brewster Lane, west of Florence, it crossed over the double-yellow line and into the oncoming traffic. The Jeep hit the motorcyclist before coming to a stop. The motorcyclist was pronounced dead on the scene, and the Fremont County Coroner will release their identity at a later time, according to CSP. Neither the driver of the Tahoe, a 49-year-old man from Florence, nor the driver of the Jeep, a 36-year-old woman from Penrose, had injuries. The cause of the crash is being investigated. DENVER (KDVR) — Westbound Interstate 70 near Deer Trail is closed for investigation on Saturday afternoon, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The closure occurred because of two separate crashes. Coloradans weigh in on what police should do about street racing
BOULDER, Colo. (KDVR) — A social media post from Colorado State Patrol Boulder has people weighing in about street racing, reckless driving and what should be done to enforce it. Measles case confirmed in vaccinated Coloradan who flew into DIA The need for speed in the metro area is a sound haunting a number of residents in the Lowry and Aurora area. 'It's troublesome, it's dangerous, I wish they would do it somewhere else,' Bill, a Lowry resident, said. 'You hear the noise every night,' Aurora resident Ed told FOX31. 'We've got a school right down the street from where we live. And I've had people going by my house at 72 miles an hour and probably a 25 or 30 mile an hour zone.' In total, throughout 2024, the Colorado State Patrol said citizens made 2,000 street racing complaints on the Street Racing Working Group's website, while many more complaints were made to local police. 'Street racing — it is a big problem in Boulder,' CSP trooper Sherri Mendez said. Mendez told FOX31 street racing reports to CSP doubled so far this year, compared to the same time frame last year. FOX31 asked about how impounding enforcement works currently. 'If the officer sees the crime, they can tow the vehicle or impound the vehicle and hold it, hold it as evidence,' Mendez said. 'But it's all on whatever is happening or what's going on. The totality of the circumstances, meaning everything that's going on with the investigation. We can't just take a vehicle because someone complained about it, because they have to identify a driver.' CSP Boulder posted this public survey poll on X. As of Thursday afternoon, more than 500 people voted: 70% voted yes 16% voted no 13% voted 'depends on the safeguards.' 'These vehicles ought to be impounded immediately,' Ed said. 'And if it were up to me, they'd be impounded for a damn long time.' Is your name Ryan? Denver meetup seeks to set world record at Rockies game Joey Williams is a part of the car enthusiast community in Colorado. He works to organize events called 'chill-ins' where people can show off their cars on the infield of the speedway instead of out on the street. FOX31 asked for his take on the survey. 'Them impounding the car and taking it from someone, I do not have a problem with that at all,' Williams said. 'Same thing where we tell people if you obey the law, the police, in theory, shouldn't do anything. If you're going to a car meet-up and you're going from one spot to the next, you're just cruising. You should have no problem getting from point A to point B without getting in trouble.' You can report street racing on the Report Street Racing website. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
