Blackwood burglar stole watch of sentimental value

Intruder Rhys Colyer, aged 33, from Blackwood broke into a house in the Llanbradach area of Caerphilly, prosecutor Matthew Comer told Newport Crown Court. The homeowner was alerted about the burglary on his mobile phone via the Ring doorbell and CCTV cameras he had installed at his property. The complainant was on the last day of his holiday and had just proposed when the break-in occurred. In a victim impact statement he revealed his devastation at losing the priceless watch and St Christopher necklace. They had been passed down to him from his late father and grandfather. 'This has had a catastrophic effect on me,' he said. 'Some of the items were of sentimental value and can never be replaced.' Footage of the break-in was released on social media and Colyer was recognised by his probation officer and a detective. The defendant handed himself in at Blackwood police station. Colyer, of no fixed abode, admitted burglary on March 10 and asked for a burglary and theft of a Ford Focus car to be taken into consideration. He has 15 previous convictions for 39 offences, including nine for dwelling burglaries. Sophie Jones for Colyer said: 'His best mitigation is his guilty plea and he's ashamed of his actions. Alcohol is his demon.' Judge Celia Hughes told Colyer: 'It's clear that this has been very distressing for the victim. 'Items of great sentimental value were lost forever. 'You have a terrible record of convictions as a burglar.' She added: 'You took these items without any thought for anyone but yourself.' The defendant was jailed for 32 months and told he would serve half of his sentence in custody before being released on licence. He will also have to pay a statutory victim surcharge.

Dr. Jeff Colyer announces bid for Kansas governor

TOPEKA (KSNT) – Former Republican Kansas Governor Dr. Jeff Colyer has announced that he will be running for Kansas' top office in 2026. On Wednesday, May 14, Colyer formally announced in a YouTube video that he would be running for Kansas Governor. 'As your governor, more Kansans were working than ever before,' Colyer said in the video. 'I took a scalpel to wasteful spending and with law enforcement, we kept our community safe. I stood shoulder to shoulder with President Trump to get the job done.' Colyer said his focus is to cut taxes and bring high-paying manufacturing and tech jobs to the Sunflower State. Topeka bank robbery, deadly shooting connected 'We'll strengthen small businesses, stand up for our farmers and keep criminal illegal aliens out of Kansas,' Colyer said in the video. 'I'll get the woke out of our schools.' On May 12, Colyer announced on social media that Assistant Majority Leader Kyle Hoffman had agreed to be his campaign treasurer. 'Kyle is a rural champion and a fiscal hawk who has a long track record of fighting for our conservative values,' Colyer wrote on 'Stay tuned for more in the coming days.' Colyer was sworn in as Kansas' 47th governor after former Governor Sam Brownback resigned on Jan. 31, 2018. Colyer served as Brownback's lieutenant governor for seven years, then served as governor for just under a year after Brownback's resignation. He lost a bid for the governor's seat in 2018 to Democrat candidate Laura Kelly. Colyer made a comeback bid for Kansas governor in 2021 but later announced that he was ending the campaign to focus on his health and to seek treatment for prostate cancer. After winning his battle with cancer, Colyer went back into medicine and volunteered in war zones across the world, according to his announcement video. New $60 million Topeka apartment community set to open in 2027 The Democratic Governors Association (DGA) issued a statement on Monday, May 12 from DGA Communications Director Sam Newton, criticizing Colyer's governorship following the Brownback administration. 'Sam Brownback's failed right-hand man Jeff Colyer is back again. Besides reminding Kansans of the broken budgets and underfunded public schools of the Brownback era, Colyer's announcement confirms that the GOP primary field is going to be crowded, chaotic, and focused on extreme partisan policies.' Former Gov. Jeff Colyer joins Republican primary for Kansas governor

Former Gov. Jeff Colyer announced his campaign for Kansas governor on May 15, becoming the fourth candidate to enter the race. Colyer served about a year as governor, assuming the office after the resignation of Gov. Sam Brownback. He served as Brownback's lieutenant governor and prior to that served a term in the Kansas House and half a term in the Kansas Senate — which he vacated to join Brownback's ticket. Colyer announced his candidacy on Mundo in the Morning, a Kansas City-area talk radio show, on May 14. In a newsletter, he listed his priorities as the following: Make the state more affordable for families. Create a Kansas Department of Government Efficiency to address waste, fraud and red tape. Remove diversity, equity and inclusion directives in schools and universities. Simplify the tax code, lower property taxes and attract jobs. Protect parental rights. Securing the border. Colyer highlighted his ties to President Donald Trump. Colyer chaired Trump's 2024 campaign in the state. "President Trump is leading the greatest American comeback in history — and Kansas needs a Governor who will fight side by side with him. I'm your man. I'm ready to roll up my sleeves, take on the special interests, and deliver real results — for you, your family, and every Kansan who dreams big," Colyer's newsletter said. Colyer sought the governorship in 2018 but narrowly lost the primary to then-Secretary of State Kris Kobach by fewer than 400 votes. Kobach was bolstered by an endorsement from Trump a day before the election. Colyer considered running for the role again in 2022 but left the race after being diagnosed with prostate cancer. Outside of politics, Colyer is a plastic surgeon who has volunteered with the International Medical Corps in war-torn regions.
