Regional District receives Community Wildfire Resilience Plans

The Regional District of Fraser-Fort George received Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans for each of its seven electoral areas on May 22nd. The plans, which have not been officially adopted yet, outline wildfire mitigation initiatives based on community feedback and recommendations from consultants. The plan for Electoral Area H, which includes Valemount and McBride, was informed by feedback from residents last fall during an October 15th community meeting at the Dunster Community Hall. Consultants also surveyed the 1.5M hectare area to assess its topography and fuel sources. High-priority action items in the area include hiring a FireSmart coordinator for the regional district, organizing community chipper days to dispose of residents' vegetation and debris for free, and establishing a Community FireSmart and Wildfire Resiliency Committee in the Robson Valley. These items will improve the area's preparedness for wildfires and help engage residents in wildfire risk reduction measures, said RDFFG Manager of Communications and Culture Hilary Erasmus. 'Over the past few years, wildfires have continued to grow in both number and severity. We can't predict when and where a wildfire will happen,' Erasmus wrote in an email to The Goat. 'Establishing Community Wildfire Resiliency Plans … will provide the Regional District with guiding documents that prioritize activities to implement wildfire resiliency and mitigation initiatives.' Erasmus added that each plan is unique to its respective electoral area, giving the Regional District specific steps to improve that community's wildfire mitigation. To that end, the Electoral Area H plan also identifies several challenges to wildfire risk reduction in the area, such as the steep, heavily forested terrain and having just one emergency exit route in the communities of Dome Creek, Crescent Spur and Mountainview Road. Additionally, over 75 per cent of land in Electoral Area H's wildland urban interface – areas where human infrastructure meets wilderness – is on private land, limiting the opportunities for fuel management treatments, according to the plan. Nearly all the wildfire risk reduction recommendations in the plan can be covered with grants, according to Erasmus. As the Regional District begins implementing its plans, residents can look for updates on the RDFFG Facebook page, the Regional District website at , and look at advertisements in local newspapers, she added. She also encouraged residents to visit for more information. To view a copy of the plan, visit . Error! Sorry, there was an error processing your request. There was a problem with the recaptcha. Canterbury food forest starting to grow

Waimakariri District Councillor, Woodend-Sefton Community Board member and lead creator of the Kaiapoi Food Forest, Brent Cairns, helps Melissa Parker and her daughter Frankie, aged 4, of Pines Beach, plant a Nikau palm tree they donated for the newly established Food Forest in Tūhaitara Coastal Park. PHOTO: SHELLEY TOPP The beginnings of a new food forest has been established in the Pines and Kairaki Beaches community, near Kaiapoi. A community planting day was held last Sunday morning at the site in Tūhaitara Coastal Park, behind the Pines Beach Community Hall, on the corner of Chichester St and Batten Grove. The idea for the Pines and Kairaki Beaches Food Forest came two years ago from a Pines and Kairaki Beaches Association committee member Nicki Brown. Right from the start, she received widespread encouragement and support for it. The design of the food forest was created by Brent Cairns, a Waimakariri district councillor, Woodend-Sefton Community Board member and Kaiapoi Food Forest trustee. ''He was very keen to help us and his support and knowledge has been huge throughout this project,'' Nicki says. Brent and his wife Shirley donated 70 trees for the food forest and helped on planting day. There have been many other contributions of trees and materials needed to establish the food forest such as mulch from Canterbury Landscape Supplies, in Kainga, cardboard from Proctor Solar, in Kaiapoi, trees from The Treehouse Horticulture, in Kaiapoi, and Te Kohaka o Tuhaitara Trust managers of Tūhaitara Coastal Park. ''Food Secure North Canterbury has given us some funds to go towards trees too,'' Nicki says. There has also been ''incredible support'' from many individuals in the community, who donated trees and helped during the planting day. A Corrections Department team helped prepare the food forest site for planting and will help to maintain it in the future, and Kaiapoi High School students have also contributed by holding two planting days at the site this week. About 170 edibles, natives and grasses were planted, but this is just the beginning with another planting day planned for June, Nicki says. She is excited for the future of the food forest and how it will bring the community together.

Nanta: Pre-Gawai celebration in Song reinforces unity, cultural heritage

Lidam Assan (left) and Nanta (second left) led the Song District Niti Daun in and around Pekan Song. KAPIT (May 17): Minister of Works Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi recently officiated the Mantar Gawai Pelilih Menua Song – Pre-Gawai Dinner held at the Song Community Hall, an event rich in Iban traditions and a celebration of unity among the diverse communities in the district. In his speech, Nanta expressed his appreciation for being part of a meaningful cultural gathering, highlighting that the annual dinner is attended by people from all walks of life and showcases unique Iban customs such as berpantun, beramban, betabuh, ngajat, pekit kumang , and pekit keling . 'This event is not only unique but serves as a symbol of unity and harmony among the races, customs, and cultures in Song district,' said Nanta. Held every May ahead of Gawai Dayak on June 1 and 2, the dinner also serves to reinforce the importance of preserving ancestral traditions. He emphasised the need to continue cultural events like the Pekit Kumang Dayak pageant contest, which celebrates identity and promotes socio-economic activity. 'Traditional Iban attire featured in Pekit Kumang is now recognised not just in Sarawak, but also internationally,' he noted, adding that criticism claiming such attire undermines cultural values is misplaced and should no longer be an issue. Referring to this year's Gawai theme, 'Beserakup, Betulung, Anang Rindang' (Unite, Help Each Other, Don't Be Complacent), Nanta called on the people of Song to remain united and cooperative to ensure continued progress and development in the Song district and the broader Kapit Division. He reminded attendees that 'Anang Rindang' serves as a call to avoid complacency in the face of development and challenges, and to remain focused on community advancement. 'Many development projects are in the works and being implemented across the Kapit Division. These efforts require not only stable political conditions and racial harmony, but also the full support and cooperation of the people,' he said. Nanta urged the community to continue supporting the government and elected representatives to ensure that development initiatives can proceed smoothly. Among those present at the dinner were Katibas assemblyman Lidam Assan, Political Secretary to the Minister of Works Ambrose Abong Bugek, Political Secretary to the Premier of Sarawak Watson Awan Jalai, Kapit Resident Elvis Didit, Song District Officer Harry Bruce Edwin, Song OCPD DSP Rowney Michael Jalak, Temenggong Jatmit Untam, Pemanca Temenggong Toh Tze Hua, Pemanca Lim Eng Hock, and many others. alexander nanta linggi Gawai Song District

'Fabric of the Community' Quilt Project 'Fabric of the Community,' is set to transform recycled textiles into a stunning, large-scale quilt celebrating the spirit of Annacurra. Annacurra Community Hall, a testament to local dedication, was built by volunteers in the early eighties and serves as the inspiration and central location for 'Fabric of the Community.' This project is a heartfelt celebration of this remarkable community spirit and the enduring significance of the community hall itself. A key element of the project will involve the local Foróige Youth Club, led by Youth Leaders Sinéad McGarry and Edel Dowling. Through dedicated drama workshops with multi-disciplinary artist Andrea Kelly, the young participants will delve into the history and heritage of Annacurra. Their creative explorations will directly inform their contributions to the quilt, either through the physical fabric or as metaphorical inspiration. The 'Fabric of the Community' Quilt will unfold through a series of engaging summer quilting workshops open to the local community with Lucy Moller of Refashioned; Wicklow based Fashion Designer , Sustainable Sewing Tutor, and Upcycling Alchemist. Lucy will be providing accessible creative opportunities for community members to participate. Participants will learn basic quilting techniques and explore the imaginative possibilities of transforming pre-loved fabrics into beautiful quilt squares. Each unique square will be imbued with personal stories and symbols, creating a rich tapestry of community narratives. GET INVOLVED: Residents of Annacurra and surrounding areas are invited to participate in the workshops and contribute their stories and fabric scraps. The project is dependent on-donations of fabrics, clothing and textiles to re-purpose into the community quilt.
