Man suffers critical stab wound in Fresno County Easter Sunday fight, deputies say

A man was stabbed during a fight in Fresno County on Easter Sunday. Deputies said the altercation took place at noon in the parking lot of a gas station near Lincoln and Elm Avenues in Easton. Deputies said a fight broke out and a knife was used at some point. The group fled in a vehicle before deputies arrived. Officers with the Fresno Police Department responded to a crash in the area of Fresno and R Streets involving a car that matched the one that fled from the Easton gas station. Officers detained everyone in the car for questioning. They learned one of the other men who was originally in the car was gone. A passerby picked him up and took him to the hospital because he was suffering from a stab wound. He is listed in critical condition at Community Regional Medical Center. The man originally approached at the gas station suffered minor injuries during the fight, deputies said. Deputies are interviewing the involved parties and determining what arrests might need to be made.

Update: Police pursuit ends in fatal three-car collision in Fresno County intersection

The three-vehicle collision that killed two people Saturday night was a result of the driver doing donuts in the intersection before leading officers in a pursuit Saturday night at Temperance and Gettysburg avenues in Clovis. A reddit user posted from their dashcam that shows the driver peeling out from the middle of the intersection before a pursuit started. Clovis Police released a statement late Sunday afternoon saying officers heard sounds of a vehicle 'peeling out and driving recklessly' just after 9:30 p.m. Police said officers saw the Dodge Charger peeling out with smoke coming from the tires and attempted to pull the vehicle over as it sped away southbound on Temperance. The driver failed to stop for their lights and sirens, spokesperson Ty Wood said. The driver approached Temperance and Belmont avenues where it collided with two vehicles. The California Highway Patrol investigated the collision and said the Dodge Charger collided with the left rear of a Toyota Camry that was stopped at the intersection's stop sign. The Dodge continued to drive out of control before colliding with a Chevrolet Tahoe that was going northbound on Temperance Avenue. The Dodge and Tahoe came to rest blocking the intersection. Two 19-year-olds in the Dodge were pronounced dead. A 20-year-old passenger had critical injuries and a fourth passenger had minor injuries. The driver, Luis Felix of Fresno, suffered major injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center. He is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol, CHP said. The driver and a woman of the Chevrolet sustained moderate injuries, while three minor passengers, ages 9, 4, and 1, suffered minor injuries. The driver of the Toyota also sustained minor injuries, Salas said. The investigation is ongoing. 'The Clovis Police Department urges drivers never get behind the wheel if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and to drive safely. To report a possible DUI or reckless driver, call 911,' Wood said. Police are deciding what charges the driver is facing.

FBI investigates death of Yosemite National Park visitor

The FBI is investigating after a woman was found injured in Yosemite National Park and then died a day later at a Fresno County hospital. The unidentified woman was found inside a facility in the park on Thursday and was in need of medical attention, according to Fresno County Sheriff spokesperson Tony Botti. She was transported to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, but died the following day. Park rangers deemed her injuries and death suspicious, according to Botti. "We at the Sheriff's Office are assisting in the investigation to see if it is indeed suspicious," Botti said. But, he added, "Nothing lends itself to that at this point." The FBI is leading the investigation. The National Park Service did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Botched surgery during C-section led to fine for Fresno hospital. Here's what happened

Community Regional Medical Center in downtown Fresno was recently fined almost $90,000 for wrongfully removing a Fallopian tube from a patient after a cesarean section birth, according to state records. The surgeon and surgical staff failed to conduct the proper vetting process, leading to confusion and potentially affecting the 27-year-old mother's ability to have more children, the California Department of Health said in its filing issued Feb. 14. The surgical event also left the woman with sleep issues and her husband has suffered mental anguish and emotional distress, the filing said. The hospital was ordered to pay $86,625, the department said. 'We are deeply committed to patient safety and preventing accidents from happening,' Thomas Utecht, CRMC's chief medical officer, said in a statement. 'We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the patient who experienced this and have taken steps to review procedures and implement additional training for staff. Our commitment has been, and always will be, dedication to continuous improvement in patient safety.' The woman was admitted and underwent the cesarean on Aug. 12, 2020. While under anesthesia she was asked in Spanish by the doctor if she wanted a tubal ligation, commonly known as getting one's 'tubes tied,' the filing says. The doctor had already cut one Fallopian tube before an assisting nurse was able to stop the doctor, because the mother had not requested to be permanently sterilized nor had she signed paperwork giving that consent. Patients undergoing such surgeries are required to be informed of the potential effects of a surgery and to sign a consent form beforehand, according to the filing. That process is necessary 'to prevent errors from happening,' the filing notes. The doctor performing the surgery asked a doctor-in-training if the mother wanted a tubal ligation. The health department's filing quoted the doctor in training. 'I made a human error and I think I was getting confused with the next patient,' the filing says. The couple filed a complaint against Community Regional Medical Center. The follow-up investigation involved an interview with the husband. 'They should not be trying to get consent while my wife was under sedation,' he said. 'I am sad and still upset with the doctors for their mistake. We do plan on having more children, but I am worried this may not be possible.'
