Boulder's Central Avenue Bridge to feature original mosaic art, following reconstruction
DENVER (KDVR) — An upcoming reconstruction project for the Central Avenue Bridge in Boulder will include two mosaic installations on the new bridge's concrete walls. The city's Community Vitality Department said it is seeking public art proposals for the project. The mosaic installations will face both the sidewalk and the street, according to the city, which said the project has a budget of approximately $40,000. 'Cheers' actor George Wendt dies 'We're excited to bring new mosaic artwork to Central Avenue to celebrate the vibrancy of this area,' said Brendan Picker-Mahoney, public art program manager for the City of Boulder, in a statement. Picker-Mahoney attributed the art project's funding to the city's '1% for Art Policy' — which dedicates a portion of capital project funding to public art — saying the mandate allowed the city to 'integrate artistry into this essential infrastructure upgrade.' The city said the project's selection panel is seeking proposals that reflect the 'technological and entrepreneurial spirit of the surrounding business community,' while also 'embracing Boulder's natural beauty and unique identity.' Artists or artist teams must submit applications by June 2 at 11:59 p.m. in order to be eligible for consideration, the city said. Those interested are asked to apply online. Broncos to play Cardinals in lone home pre-season game Community members are also invited and encouraged to contribute to the 'creative process' by sharing themes, memories, values and keywords that the city says should be considered by the selected shortlisted artists when crafting their proposals. Residents who want to submit their ideas can do so online. The Central Avenue Bridge Replacement project itself is set to begin in September, according to the city, which said the existing pedestrian and vehicular bridges no longer meet current standards. Red Cross resources available for tornado victims The city said the reconstruction project aims to improve water flow and consolidate the existing pedestrian and vehicular bridges into one vehicular bridge with a dedicated pedestrian sidewalk. A replacement of the existing waterline from 55th to 57th streets is also included in the project and is set to begin this summer, the city said. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. Boulder celebrates creative landscape during Arts Week
Oscar Wilde once said, "Art is the most intense mode of individualism that the world has known." It's a powerful tool for expression, communication, and making sense of the world. All of that will be on display during the 8-days of Boulder Arts Week. It all starts with First Friday Arts Walk on April 4, 2025. The NoBo Arts District will be stepping up it's regular First Friday events. Beyond that there will be some 150 exhibits, performances, and activities. "The Downtown Boulder Partnership does this event every year. It's the Taste of Pearl. It's where local businesses partner with restaurants, and breweries, and distilleries, and wineries to do kind of a progressive culinary arts celebration. We have some other arts that we're bringing to the Pearl Street Mall while that's happening," said Cindy Sepucha, Manager of Boulder Arts Week. That is happening on Sunday, April 6, 2025. For the first time ever, organizers will be giving out 5 awards during Boulder Arts Week. Funded through the Community Vitality Department's Office of Arts and Culture, winners will get a $1,000 stipend. This year's award categories are: "I like to say for people to look at Boulder Arts Week kind of like a restaurant week where it's an opportunity to test out something new. If you're really into one kind of art, try something different," Sepucha suggested. LINK: Boulder Arts Week Boulder Arts Week runs April 4 - 12, 2025.
