Hassan: To mitigate the growing human-wildlife conflict in
Malnad region
, the Union forest ministry has suggested creating an
elephant corridor
in the area.
Union forest minister Bhupender Yadav
wrote a letter to the forest department to submit a proposal, marking a new development.
There was a plan to acquire lands and plantations of farmers from eight villages around Bisle in Sakleshpur taluk to create an elephant corridor. The problem exceeded the limits of Sakleshpur, Alur, and Belur taluks. The increasing jumbo population is intensifying
human-elephant conflict
. Following several untoward incidents, mainly human deaths,
Hassan MP Shreyas Patel
met with Union forest minister Bhupender Yadav to request a permanent solution to the problem.
In Hettur of Sakleshpur taluk, hundreds of farmers voluntarily came forward to give a total of 2,261.2 acres of land to the forest department. A comprehensive report on land acquisition was prepared by a district-level committee in 2012, said an officer. Due to the high number of elephants in Hettur area, farmers live in constant fear. If adequate compensation is provided, farmers are still willing to give up their land.
With farmers ready to part with their land, MP requested the Union minister to provide compensation under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management And Planning Authority Scheme. Apart from Hassan, the problem is rampant in Kodagu and Chikkamagaluru districts as well. Union forest minister Bhupender Yadav instructed the submission of a comprehensive scientific report related to the construction of an elephant corridor to address problems in these three districts.
