Foldable iPhone will be the first of many yearly successors
*Image credit — ConceptsiPhone The almost mythical foldable iPhone is finally seeming like a reality as more and more reports from inside the industry start making their way to us. And now a new source reveals that — just like the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and its predecessors — the foldable iPhone will be a yearly doesn't want to differentiate its foldable phone as a separate niche product category. Instead insiders claim that the foldable iPhone will be marketed as the top of the line iPhone going forward: snatching the crown from the Pro Max models. With that in mind I think we can also expect Apple's foldable to feature even better hardware than the Pro and Pro Max phones. After such a long wait filled with rumors and speculation it should be reassuring for Apple fans that the foldable iPhone won't be a one-and-done treat. Nor will it be a unique phone that only sees a successor every few years like some other Apple products. No, Apple is determined to make the foldable iPhone a new stream of revenue and what better way to do that than to make it a yearly spectacle. This is because the company reportedly wanted its entrance to be perfect and wants the foldable iPhone to be the talk of the town. It primarily hopes to achieve this by making a foldable phone that has an almost completely invisible crease. Apple is also hoping that its phone will rejuvenate the decaying foldable industry. There are still conflicting reports of when the foldable iPhone will launch. Some reports claim that the phone will debut alongside a new mostly glass-based Pro model in 2027 for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. Others, like the report about the foldable iPhone being a yearly release, maintain that the phone is coming out in 2026 alongside the iPhone 18. Major competitors that the foldable iPhone will have to take on include the aforementioned Galaxy Z Fold 7 , the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the Oppo Find N5. The Galaxy Z and Pixel Fold phones provide a much more superior AI experience with Gemini compared to Apple Intelligence. Meanwhile the Oppo Find N5 is a super slim and very impressive device that will probably cost less than Apple's offering. The foldable iPhone is supposed to be another new option for Apple users just like the iPhone 17 Air which is slated to come out this year. Whether any of these two phones stick around or go the way of the mini and Plus models remains to be seen.

Credit: ConceptsiPhone / YouTube Apple's first-ever foldable iPhone may finally arrive next year, if many leaks and analysts are to be believed. And now, the Apple whisperer, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, claims that the newest folding device will have a few key upgrades over rivals. He primarily focused on the folding mechanism. Over the years, it's been rumored that Apple's struggle to release a folding phone is due to the crease in the screen. Gurman says that next year's phone will feature a "nearly invisible" crease when the iPhone is in the open position. On the other side of the device, it should have a "much higher-quality hinge." Earlier this year, tipster Instant Digital wrote that Apple will offer a revolutionary liquid metal hinge that utilizes "amorphous alloy (metallic glass)." Allegedly, this alloy will be more durable and able to get flatter. In comparison, Samsung's flagship foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold series, has improved yearly but hasn't hidden the crease. Still, this year's Galaxy Z Fold 7 should be a significant upgrade compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Reportedly, Samsung Display has managed to eliminate the crease, but it's unclear if that will appear in this year's model or next year's foldables. Another high-end iPhone According to Gurman, the foldable iPhone will be pitched as a "new high-end model, rather than a niche alternative design." This aligns with reports from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that it could release next year or in 2027 with a price between $2,000 and $2,500. Kuo also shared that the folding iPhone should feature a 7.8-inch inner display with a 5.5-inch cover screen, two cameras, a front camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID. He claimed the handset will be 4.5mm when unfolded and between 9mm and 9.5mm when folded. Very similar to specs to what the Z Fold 7 should feature this year. Gurman did add a caveat that sources he spoke with said that development could fall behind, which suggests that we might not see the phone until 2027.

Foldable iPhone: Apple has a special marketing tactic in store
*Header image is referential and showcases a concept render. | Image credit — ConceptsiPhone The mythical foldable iPhone has been the subject of rumors and sketchy reports for a very long time but it may finally become a reality for the 20th anniversary of the iPhone. Apple insider Mark Gurman reveals in his newsletter Power On that the company has a different marketing tactic in store for the foldable iPhone .Unlike the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 or the current Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold the iPhone foldable will not be a niche product. Apple apparently plans to sell the foldable iPhone as a much higher-end variant of that year's flagship iPhone lineup, kind of like the Pro Max models today. The foldable iPhone has taken this long because Apple wants to 'perfect' the foldable formula. Most notably, Apple wants to release a foldable smartphone that has an almost invisible crease. However the foldable iPhone will, understandably, be a lot pricier than any iPhone ever made before it. Samsung has had to revise sales expectations for the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and Fold 7 because the foldable industry continues to underperform. In fact the company is allegedly only going to be manufacturing around 200,000 units of its upcoming tri-foldable phone. This is because it will be very expensive and Samsung does not expect it to go out of Galaxy tri-foldable will also only be released in a select few regions that have the buying power to purchase it. Which makes Apple's marketing tactic for the foldable iPhone a little questionable in my opinion. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 did not sell as well as Samsung had hoped. | Image credit — PhoneArena If other foldables have failed to sell as expected — mostly due to the price tag — then the foldable iPhone will logically face the same issue. Perhaps Apple is hopeful that a nearly invisible crease might entice more consumers to give foldables a try: specifically the foldable iPhone . However we already have an example of Apple having tried something similar and failing. The Apple Vision Pro, despite being one of the best AR headsets ever made, did not sell as expected. This was mostly due to the insane price tag of $3,499. Which is why I'm doubtful about Apple's marketing strategy for the foldable iPhone . Then again the iPhone is also a much more well established product than a Mixed Reality headset so I may yet be surprised by how it performs.
