Ex-footballer, 40, rushed to hospital with serious stab wounds - but neighbours label police account of attempted suicide 'completely FALSE'
Former Ligue 1 footballer Daniel Congre was hospitalised after reportedly being found with serious stab wounds close to his heart. Congre, who played for Toulouse, Montpellier and Dijon during his career, was rushed to hospital after suffering the injury on Monday evening. His wife had called the emergency services, with initial reports stating the 40-year-old had been found unconscious at their home in the town of Perols. French newspaper L'Equipe reported that Congre, who is now a sports coordinator at Ligue 1 club Lyon, had actually been conscious when emergency services arrived. The newspaper quoted the emergency response as mentioning 'a knife deliberately planted in the heart' in their report of the incident. The Montpellier prosecutor's office officially mentioned a 'suicide attempt', although Congre was not officially named. An investigation is ongoing. 'The victim's life is not in danger,' a police source told L'Equipe. 'The intervention of a third party seems to be excluded. 'We are awaiting the doctors' conclusions regarding the nature of the injury and its severity.' The defender, his wife and children had reportedly visited their neighbours on Monday ahead of the incident. Their neighbour, speaking to L'Equipe, insisted the claim of a suicide attempt was 'completely false'. 'Everyone is fine, they were at my house last night (Monday night), Daniel , his wife, and his children. 'Everything that has been said is completely false, I won't tell you anything more. 'He was hospitalised, but not for the reasons given.' Lyon have yet to publicly comment on Congre's hospitalisation following the request of his family. Congre officially joined Lyon as a sports coordinator last November, shorty after his retirement. The former defender is best known for his time at Montpellier, where he made 325 appearances in all competitions. He also made 227 appearances for Toulouse.

Despite this, he failed to make their squad for the 2009 Concacaf Gold Cup. A source close to the now-retired player said on Tuesday morning that his condition had become more stable. But enquiries continue into whether Congre's injuries were self-inflicted or a third party was involved.

Trump 2.0's first 100 days have not made America great
The first 100 days of a US presidency is a useful – but made-up – milestone. It was first made-up by Franklin Delano Roosevelt after his landslide 1932 presidential election victory. FDR promised a 'New Deal' for the American people, and from the moment he arrived in the White House in 1933 Roosevelt brought Congress into a three-month (100 days) session to pass 15 major bills, 77 new laws along with 99 executive orders to repair the damage of the Great Depression. New public works, new dams on great rivers, and a new kind of vigour energised the US government and the American people. FDR's energy built the superpower. It's too early to judge Donald Trump's presidency but his first 100 days is a landmark that will be reached on 30 April. Already we can see a credibility gap between the boasts and few positive achievements. This has been blurred by the deluge of new words, new problems and new distractions. It is therefore worth going through some of the most obvious yardsticks by which Mr Trump's 100 days may be measured to compare promises and potential future progress. Or otherwise. First, Ukraine. The much publicised and not-much-believed Trump claim was to end the conflict in 24 hours. Almost 100 days later, US administration statements suggest Mr Trump may now 'pass' on bringing peace to Ukraine. Yet peace, not 'passing', was the Trump promise, even if no one, presumably not even Mr Trump himself, believed what he promised. Then there is 'the most beautiful word' in the Trump dictionary, 'tariffs'. It's too soon to say what kind of effect the proposed (and subsequently changed, reconfigured or withdrawn) tariffs will eventually have, although trade experts use words like 'uncertainty' and 'dislocation'. What we can say is that the greatest geo-strategic competitor of the US, China, seems energised by the prospect of a Trump tariff battle. China commentators have reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping's government appears to see trade dislocation and economic consequences as very unfortunate but perhaps ultimately bringing some political advantages. Beijing, with a Communist government, is standing up for free trade against protectionism. In countries as far apart geographically and politically as South and East Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Europe, the Trump Tariffs can make the future look like a contest between protectionist Trumpland and the (mostly) free-trade Rest of the World. Even countries that have at times difficult relationships with Beijing are sharing some Trump tariff pain. Market reaction includes descriptive words like 'turmoil' or 'uncertainty' or 'jitters,' and as former UK Conservative prime minister Margaret Thatcher always lectured the British people: 'You can't buck the market'. Mr Trump may prove otherwise. I wouldn't count on it. One other key foreign policy ambition is worth touching upon, Mr Trump wants US expansion, specifically targeting Canada, Greenland and Panama. In his address to Congress in March he said that 'to further enhance our national security, my administration will be reclaiming the Panama Canal'. No member of the Trump administration has explained what 'reclaiming' means. There are real concerns in Washington about alleged Chinese influence in the Canal Zone with unconfirmed reports of the US military being ordered to draw up contingency plans for possible action. I was in Panama reporting for the BBC on the US invasion of Panama some years ago and can reveal the utterly unsurprising truth: the US has always had plans to seize control of the Panama Canal if this vital strategic asset for international trade ever comes under threat. No shock there. Greenland, home to vital US military bases, has also always been a significant strategic interest for the Pentagon since 1945. Here, however, the Trump administration in sending an uninvited Vice President JD Vance to Greenland managed a remarkable trick by irritating both independence-minded native Greenlanders and also the old colonial power, Denmark. This was a text-book study in dim diplomacy. Finally, the Trump 100 days report card ends with Canada. There Mr Trump has created another kind of unity. He has united Canadians around patriotism, the maple leaf and Canadian sovereignty. This has given an enormous electoral boost to Prime Minister Mark Carney 's Liberal party. They were on course to lose power but in standing up to Mr Trump's ambitions and tariffs Mr Carney is now considered the favourite to win the general election on April 28. In wanting Canada as the 51st state, as Mr Carney puts it, Mr Trump has a 'strategy to break us so America can own us. We are over the shock of the betrayal. But we should never forget the lessons'. We can all add our own reflections on Mr Trump's first 100-day achievements but for now there isn't space to discuss the attempted reformation of the entire US government, personnel changes, the attacks on universities, US-EU relations, Gaza, Iran and many other hugely important topics. Two big domestic political questions also remain. Have the money markets really stabilised? And are Republicans in Congress really happy with how things are going? We'll find out soon.

Odisha CM Mohan Majhi takes Cabinet to Sambalpur in ‘strategic move' with eye on ‘neglected' region
Odisha CM Mohan Charan Majhi Monday, along with his 10 Cabinet ministers and senior officials, held a grievance cell hearing meeting in politically significant Sambalpur, as the administration claimed it was the first meeting outside Bhubaneswar. According to officials, Majhi heard grievances of around 2,400 people and received several petitions during the one-day session at the office of the Sambalpur Municipal Corporation. He also approved grants of Rs 19.50 lakh from the CM's relief fund for 18 people suffering from critical diseases. Majhi's decision to move the meeting to Sambalpur stemmed from fact that the BJP considers western Odisha, with five Lok Sabha seats and at least 38 Assembly seats, as its stronghold compared to the coastal belt. This also comes at a time when voices of a separate statehood in the western region are growing louder. Last month, senior BJP leader and Sambalpur MLA Jayanarayan Mishra called the merger of Odisha's western Kosal region with the rest of the state a 'historic blunder', with the Opposition BJD alleging that the ruling party was trying to 'divide the state'. At a government function, Mishra, a five-time MLA, alleged that the Kosal region has been neglected for years. 'We have been exploited in every sphere… mining, agriculture, forest and service. We have been denied our cultural rights,' Mishra had said. Describing his government a 'Lokanka Sarkar' (people's government), which is sensitive to people's issues, Majhi also took a dig at former CM Naveen Patnaik for 'not hearing people's grievances'. 'There have been instances in the past when people facing various issues were trying to meet the chief minister and other ministers but they could not. After our government came to power, we are sensitive towards peoples' issues and trying to resolve those,' said Majhi. He claimed that 88% of the 9,377 grievance petitions received by the CM's grievance cell have been addressed over the past 10 months. During his 24-year stint at the helm, Patnaik visited the CM's grievance cell for only 76 days and never held any grievance meeting after August 16, 2008. A senior government official said it was a 'strategic move' to hold a meeting in a region where people have felt 'alienated' for years because of government apathy. 'The chief minister, with the move, not just tried to bridge the gap between the state capital and Sambalpur, which is 300 km away, but also sent a strong message that the BJP government cares for all regions equally,' said a senior government official. With people from 10 western Odisha districts attending the meeting, the message will resonate across the region loud and clear, the official said. Senior Cabinet Minister Rabi Narayan Naik, also from the western region, said the initiative will ease people's hassle of travelling to Bhubaneswar to submit their grievances to the CM. Similar grievance hearing meetings will be conducted in all regions in future, the CM said. Traditionally known as a Congress stronghold, Odisha's Western region has always remained prominent with successive governments picking ministers from the region. To expand its presence and combat BJP's growing dominance in the region, former CM Patnaik, for the first time in the 2019 Assembly polls, contested from Bijepur Assembly segment in the region's Bargarh district. However he didn't leave his bastion of Hinjili in Ganjam district. After winning both the seats, he vacated Bijepur. A similar strategy was followed in 2024. Patnaik fought from Kantabanji in Balangir district to counter BJP's surge in the region but he lost. After coming to power, the BJP kept its thrust on the region by picking Patnagarh MLA K V Singh Deo as one of the two deputy CMs and also three Cabinet ministers from this region. Even though BJP won 20 of the state's 21 Lok Sabha seats, only Sundargarh MP Jual Oram and Sambalpur MP Dharmendra Pradhan have been inducted into the Cabinet in the Narendra Modi government.
