DART plans 10% cut to service amid budget constraints, loss in member cities
DES MOINES, Iowa — The Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) announced it's planning a 10% cut to services. On Tuesday evening, the DART commission approved the service cuts. The decision comes as DART continues to work to close its budget shortfall and cities like Pleasant Hill and Grimes have decided to cancel service. 'The Commission made the fiscally responsible decision to draft a new bus network based on a budget the region can confidently afford,' DART Commission Chair and Des Moines Mayor Connie Boesen said in a statement. 'DART will present a draft plan in September for public input, as we work to finalize the new network by early 2026. Our goal is to provide long-term stability for the residents of our communities who rely on DART to go about their daily lives.' Hundreds of volunteers needed for National Speech and Debate Tournament in Des Moines DART said 90% of its current service will still be maintained, but the new plan would increase service on high-use routes and would limit, or eliminate, service to areas that are rarely used. For member cities that have less ridership like Altoona and Clive, DART is considering utilizing a micro transit to ensure residents in those areas can still access transportation if needed. The new proposed bus network will be released by DART for public input before a plan is finalized by the DART Commission in January 2026. If approved, the new routes would begin in summer 2026. DART said it currently has a balanced budget and will continue operating at its normal levels until the new routes are implemented. Des Moines set to host first ever MASLW Champion Tournament
DES MOINES, Iowa — Iowa Soccer fans have the opportunity to see history in action at Buccaneer Arena with the debut of the MASLW playoffs. The announcement made Friday coincides with March being Women's History Month, and adds to the state's legacy of firsts for women with Des Moines hosting the tournament. To celebrate the landmark moment for women's sports, Mayor Connie Boesen was joined by soccer leaders and advocates at Buccaneer Arena, and spoke about how this weekend will inspire other young female athletes. Drake hires South Dakota State's Eric Henderson as next men's basketball head coach 'We look forward to the many years and the growth of your organization and the excitement that you bring because what I found as the first women Mayor is that young women look up to me understanding that anything is possible, and you will be doing that for a whole group of young women who thought maybe if they don't want to play outside, maybe this is a whole other avenue and more opportunities for people to play the sport that you love,' said Mayor Boesen. The owner of the Demon Hawks, Darwin Salas, spoke about how special hosting the tournament is for Des Moines. 'It's a dream come true, to be able to not only host the Major Arena Soccer League Women's first year in the making for the league with great competition, but being able to host it here in Des Moines.' Iowa lawmakers look to change protected classes in Iowa Civil Rights on Thursday 'We also know that this will help not only with housing providing more housing options, it will be a key talent attraction piece not only to our downtown but for our entire region. It also helps point out the fact that we are all about getting stuff done and making business happen here in our region,' said Tiffany Tauscheck, Greater Des Moines Partnership. 'Very few downtowns across the country can say that they are building a 33-story tower right now. But look at us downtown Des Moines. We are making it happen.' 'It is about our commitment to creating a city where opportunity thrives and families can live and grow,' said Connie Boesen, Des Moines Major. 'This isn't just the construction of a building. It represents a vision of our future.' 'We are thrilled to break ground on what will be a truly iconic addition to Downtown Des Moines,' said Joe Teeling, developer and founder of St. Joseph's Group. '515 Walnut Tower represents more than just a residential development; it is a testament to the city's growth, energy, and future potential. We believe this project will not only enhance the skyline but also contribute to a thriving Downtown community.' The 515 Walnut Tower is projected to be complete by the Spring of 2027. Mayor Boesen, Billy Weathers share their favorite underrated dishes
We asked some of Des Moines' movers and shakers for their current favorite underrated dish around town. 🍕 Mayor Connie Boesen: " I have a special place in my heart for classic Italian from Chuck's Pizza. Chuck's has that old Des Moines charm that makes me feel at home every time I open the door." 😋 Morgan Chicchelly of Des Moines Girl: "The crispy rice wraps from Lucky Lotus. I can never get enough of those." 🥘 Billy Weathers, a local hip-hop artist and owner of The Contrary: "Spices of Nepal is probably my guilty pleasure. I love that place. When I go there and get their butter chicken, it's religious for me." 🍜 Paul Rottenberg of Orchestrate: "I have been eating a fair amount of Vietnamese lately — I've been eating vermicelli bowls all over the place. So that's been my item of the winter."
