Spanish island hit by power outage as thousands left in the dark
A power outage hit several areas of the Spanish island of La Palma in the Canary archipelago on Thursday, the local council said in a post on the social media platform X. The island was not affected by the massive blackout that hit most of Spain and Portugal on April 28. Early reports suggest a third of La Palma is without electricity and around 30,000 people are affected.

A power outage hit several areas of the Spanish island of La Palma in the Canary archipelago on Thursday, the local council said in a post on the social media platform X. La Radio Canaria took to social media to explain how the power outage would affect around 30,000 people in La Palma. 'The source is unknown for now, but everything points to a problem at the Los Guinchos power plant,' it added. The island was not affected by the massive blackout that hit most of Spain and Portugal, including their capitals, Madrid and Lisbon, on April 28. Airports were disabled, and shops and offices were left in the dark. Traffic was gridlocked, flights were grounded, and trains were suspended while people waited to be rescued from elevators and were left without water supplies. Whole cities were cut off with mobile networks, Wi-Fi, ATMs and card machines inoperative during the disruption, which began around 12.30pm last Monday.
