Independence meets the moment, wins first boys' lacrosse championship
RICHMOND — Independence boys' lacrosse coach Dave Woodring is an emotional leader, so it wasn't a surprise for his son, Cooper, to see him choking up after Saturday's Virginia Class 5 final.
The Tigers had just won the first state championship in program history and Cooper, a junior attacker, couldn't erase his smile amid the championship celebration. At midfield, Dave looked at his team hugging each other and then looked at his son. His sunglasses hid the tears about to fall from his eyes. He didn't want the moment to end.
