Joel Dahmen Makes PGA Tour History at Charles Schwab Challenge

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Joel Dahmen is one of the most popular players on the PGA Tour. That's why his career accomplishments always go over well with fans, even if his results this season haven't been great. That's exactly what happened in the first round of the Charles Schwab Challenge, as Dahmen earned the first ace of his PGA Tour career. It took him 225 tournaments to accomplish the feat. The play came on the 186-yard, par-3 13th hole, the fourth of the round for Dahmen, who started on the 10th tee. The 37-year-old's tee shot hit a slope on the green behind the pin and rolled back with such luck that it went straight into the hole. The eagle completed Dahmen's good run until that point, as he had parred the previous three holes. His joy was short-lived, however, as he added one birdie and three bogeys on the rest of the first nine to end the segment at even par. This is Dahmen's eighth appearance in the Charles Schwab Challenge. In seven previous starts, he has made the cut five times and his best finish is a tie for 19th in 2020. His best round at Colonial Country Club is a 65 (second, 2020) and his worst is a 76 (fourth round 2023, fourth round 2024). The one-time PGA Tour winner has played in 14 events this season and missed eight cuts, including three in a row heading into the Charles Schwab Challenge. He has three top-10 finishes, including a tie for second at the Corales Puntacana Championship, his best finish of the year to date. Joel Dahmen of the United States plays his shot from the 14th tee during the first round of the Charles Schwab Challenge 2025 at Colonial Country Club on May 22, 2025 in Fort Worth, Texas. Joel Dahmen of the United States plays his shot from the 14th tee during the first round of the Charles Schwab Challenge 2025 at Colonial Country Club on May 22, 2025 in Fort Worth, results have caused him to slip down the FedEx Cup rankings, where he is currently 81st. Dahmen needs to break into the top 70 to return to the playoffs, which he has missed since 2022. The issue also has a bearing on his status on the PGA Tour. Starting next season, only the top 100 in the FedEx Cup standings will keep their tour card, so the Clarkston, Washington, native must remain in that group. A member of the PGA Tour since 2017, Dahmen has played 224 tournaments at this level, making 146 cuts, with one victory, three runner-up finishes and 22 other top 10s. 2025 PGA Championship odds: Top sleeper picks for Quail Hollow this week

2025 PGA Championship odds: Top sleeper picks for Quail Hollow this week Show Caption Hide Caption 2025 PGA Championship preview: Rory McIlroy leads loaded field Fresh off his Masters win, Rory McIlroy headlines a stacked field at the 2025 PGA Championship. What is the best story in sports? Is it the legend showcasing dominance every time they steps into their element? Is it a close-knit race for the biggest prize in their field? Or is it the underdog that nobody saw coming making a name for themself? Golf is a perfect sport to showcase that last one. It's an entirely game sport, meaning a good tournament could lead to massive exposure for someone not as accustomed to the spotlight. Just two years ago, we saw Michael Block shock the world with a top-15 finish at the PGA Championship. He'll be back this weekend, but does that mean that he's lock for a solid finish again? Probably not. So, who is the longshot that could turn heads this time around? Who amongst the field is being overlooked? These are the questions that bettors across America are trying to answer as they attempt to predict this weekend's major at Quail Hollow in Charlotte. However, it's much easier said than done. Here are three golfers who could wind up outperforming their current betting odds. All odds via BetMGM. PGA Championship forecast: Thursday weather updates for Quail Hollow Club Best sleepers for 2025 PGA Championship Corey Conners (+5000) Conners might be one of the fastest rising golfers in the world right now and his play of late has been fantastic. He's gained strokes off the tee at eight straight events and has gained shots on approach in seven straight. He's coasting into the PGA Championship with touch and confidence that is hard to find. Furthermore, he's done exceptionally well at recent majors too, finishing top-10 in two of his last three major appearances. Oh, and if that wasn't enough, he also has two straight top-13 finishes at Quail Hollow. Keith Mitchell (+10000) Among golfers who have played at least eight rounds at Quail Hollow over the last six years, only ten have an average strokes gained of +1.9 or better. Mitchell is one of them. Throw in the fact that he has five consecutive top-18 finishes and there's plenty of reason to believe Mitchell will outperform his odds. While his chip game has been shaky to say the least, his hot play as of late, including a T-2 finish at the Corales Puntacana Championship, is enough to feel at least somewhat confident in this longshot. Will Zalatoris (+15000) Sure, Zalatoris missed the cut at the Masters, but he was a trendy sleeper pick prior to that tournament for a reason. He's been consistent. In fact, in 2025, the Masters remains the only cut that Zalatoris has failed to make. While the counterargument would be that Zalatoris has missed the cut in three straight major tournaments, this is a new course, and Zalatoris has done pretty well at the PGA Championship in the past, finishing second in 2022 to Justin Thomas via a playoff. Zalatoris has the talent to be a contender at this tournament, and could provide tremendous value for anyone competing in a pool for the tournament.
