Illinois State Police sqaud struck by Dodge Charger on I-290, driver charged with DUI
CHICAGO, Ill. (WTVO) — Police charged the driver of a Dodge Charger with drunk driving after he reportedly slammed into an Illinois State Police squad car on Interstate 290 on Tuesday.
According to state police, a trooper was conducting a traffic crash investigation on the shoulder of I-290 near Lavergne Avenue around 7:42 p.m.
While the trooper was outside the vehicle, the Charger, driven by Cordell Franklin, 40, of Chicago, crashed into the vehicle, pushing it into the rear of the vehicle from the previous crash, police said.
Franklin was uninjured and was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, following too closely, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, and a Move Over Law violation.
ISP has suffered six Move Over Law-releated crashes in 2025 so far. Last year, 12 troopers were injured in 27 Move Over Law-related crashes.
