Home tour: A multigenerational family retreat in Whistler, Canada with panoramic mountain views

Above Large, expansive glazing on the second floor with open-plan living spaces Homeowners Matt and Leanne, who are also behind Vancouver-based luxury custom home builder E2 Homes Ltd responsible for the construction of the property, envisioned a place for the whole family to gather under one roof–a holiday home that feels both grand enough to accommodate more than 16 people and intimate enough for the couple during their 'off season' weekend retreats. 'It was important to create a home that would grow with the family while still feeling unified, and the challenge of balancing privacy, shared spaces and different lifestyles within one cohesive design was creatively stimulating.' These frames also establish a rhythmic pattern throughout the house, providing a sense of stability as cabinetry and windows move around them in an intentional way, serving the functional aspects of the home's structure. Above A lustrous mix of pearl grey Corian and super white marble in the kitchen Above The airy space can be bustling with activity, yet doesn't feel chaotic Large, expansive glazing on the second floor allows natural light to permeate the interiors, while offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and forest throughout the dramatic seasonal changes in the mountainous setting. To express a West Coast modern aesthetic with minimalist elegance and warmth, locally sourced basalt and hemlock–a native North American wood species known for its durability and attractive appearance–are incorporated as principal drivers for the interiors. 'With the house full, it is important that it doesn't feel chaotic,' Burgers explains. 'The idea was to feel at any moment that even if all family members were in the home, and it was bustling with activity, one could still retreat to their own quarters and rooms or find a spot to relax easily.' Here, the sprawling layout–consisting of the living, dining and kitchen areas–benefits from the high, pitched ceilings. 'Putting the living spaces upstairs meant that they look over the neighbouring houses to the distant mountains, with large floor-to-ceiling windows facing south for sunlight and heat,' Burgers adds. This Bougie Overlander Costs More Than Your House

Read the full story on Backfire News We're keenly aware that buying an overlander can be incredibly expensive, making golf look cheap in comparison, but this listing for a Storyteller Overland GXV Epic on Facebook Marketplace made us choke. It's not that we haven't seen super expensive overland rigs listed before, it's just that this one is wildly looking at the inside of what's really an off-road motor home and it's no wonder. You get to sleep on a queen bed – yes, a real mattress, not a cot or inflatable mattress. Nice wood trim and other high-end finishes abound. It has AC and a heater. There are Corian countertops, a glass tile backsplash, even a washer and dryer onboard. We've lived in places that are smaller and not nearly as nice as the inside of this rig. But wait, there's plenty more. Also onboard is a 120 gallon freshwater tank plus a 40 gallon heated tank. This thing has two 100 gallon fuel tanks and has a claimed range of 1,800 miles. That seems a little excessive, but with how it's set up, you could 'live off the grid' in the wilderness in this rig for weeks, maybe months. It sits on a custom Kenworth chassis, has four-wheel drive with a 50:1 crawl ratio, plus comes with front and rear air-locking diffs. It's obviously not a rock crawler, but it should be able to take you through some fairly rugged areas while offering unbelievable pampering. You're definitely not roughing it in the Storyteller, but all the luxuries are going to cost you big. To get one of these built brand new, which the ad is for a build slot, will set you back $799,784. There's a good chance this thing costs as much or more than the house you currently own or rent. Maybe it's inflation or the fact that overlanding has become mobile glamping where some people can't do without pretty much anything they enjoy at home. Or maybe it's just that some people buy rigs like this more for status than for the love of the great outdoors – you decide. This thing is Dave Ramsey's nightmare on wheels. Check out this overlander's listing for yourself here. Images via Chad Kreuter/Facebook Marketplace
