PETALING JAYA, May 17 (Bernama) -- New Malayan Tigress head coach Joel Cornelli has described the two upcoming international football friendlies against Bhutan and Hong Kong, and two matches against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as ideal preparations for the team ahead of his first major task at the 2026 Women's Asian Cup qualifiers in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. Cornelli said the upcoming fixtures will be crucial for him to assess the capabilities of his squad and implement his footballing philosophy before heading to Tajikistan in June. 'This will be a very important week of training to get to know the players and to start implementing my philosophy and game model with the team. bootstrap slideshow 'Bhutan and Hong Kong are not in our qualifying group, but it is very important to see the level of our team at this moment because this is the only available match window," he told reporters at the opening ceremony of the Women's League Qualifying Round at the PKNS Field here today. Cornelli said the friendlies would allow him to address weaknesses in the squad, particularly in attacking and finishing. 'I've only seen the girls in video footage matches against Indonesia, Cambodia in August, and Saudi Arabia, and we didn't score many goals. 'Of course, we need to work on that during these friendly matches so I can identify the best positions for the players and better understand where our weaknesses lie,' he said. For the AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers, Malaysia have been placed in a challenging Group H, alongside three-time champions North Korea.

Malayan Tigress move to samba beat with appointment of Brazilian coach
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian women's football team are all set to go with the flow of the samba beat. The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have appointed experienced Brazilian Joel Cornelli as the new coach of the Malayan Tigress, replacing Soleen Al-Zoubi, who now takes on the role of FAM women's football technical director. The move is part of FAM's broader vision to elevate the structure and competitiveness of the women's team, with an eye on stronger performances at both the regional and international stages. In his first statement, Cornelli expressed gratitude to FAM's leadership for the opportunity. 'I am honoured and deeply touched to be entrusted with leading the Malayan Tigress. I see tremendous potential in the Malaysian women's players and I'm committed to building a team that can not only compete in South-East Asia but also challenge at the Asian level,' he said at a press conference held at the FAM headquarters here yesterday. 'My focus is on building a solid foundation and instilling a professional football culture within the squad. 'I see lots of good players with great potential and talent. It is a great challenge, for sure, but I believe in this project and can improve the performance of the team. 'I have experience working in both men and women's football, so adaptability is not an issue, plus my experience with the Jordan women's team will be helpful.' Cornelli has over two decades of coaching experience, working with several professional clubs and development programmes across South America, Asia, and South-East Asia. FAM exco member and chairwoman of the Women's Football Committee, Datuk Suraya Yaacob expressed confidence in Joel's appointment, calling it a vital step toward strengthening the Malayan Tigress ahead of major assignments. 'We warmly welcome Joel into the Malaysian women's football family. His appointment comes at a crucial time, especially with the Group H matches of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers coming up this June,' Suraya. 'He will begin working with the players during the upcoming centralised training camp at the end of May. With the full support of the coaching staff and FAM, I believe our national women's team can spring a surprise in Tajikistan.' The Malayan Tigress will begin their first centralised training camp of the year on May 21 and are scheduled to play international friendlies against Bhutan and Hong Kong in Bhutan before heading to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, for the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers in June.

Malayan Tigress Get Touch Of Brazilian Coach, Soleen Appointed Technical Director
PETALING JAYA, May 14 (Bernama) -- The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) today appointed Joel Cornelli, an experienced coach from Brazil, as the head coach of the national women's football squad. In an announcement, FAM Women's Football Committee chairman Datuk Suraya Yaacob, said Cornelli, who will officially begin his duties at the end of this month, to replace Soleen Al-Zoubi who is currently the FAM Women's Football technical director. Cornelli, who has more than two decades of experience in the coaching, is honoured to be entrusted with leading the Malayan Tigress squad, especially for the 2026 Women's Asian Cup Qualifier in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, from June 23 to July 5. bootstrap slideshow "I believe our team has the potential and I see some players have huge quality. We have one month and a half (2026 Women's Asian Cup Qualifier), so I will try to do my best to organise the team," he said at his first press conference here, today. Among his achievements while coaching abroad before were guiding Indonesian club Arema FC to win the 2024 President's Cup in addition to helping Jordanian women's football club Etihad Club win the 2023 Jordan Women's Pro League and the 2023 Saudi Arabia Champions Cup. Meanwhile, Suraya described the appointment of the 58-year-old coach as important to further strengthen the Malayan Tigress to compete on the international stage. "We very much welcome Joel's presence into the Malaysian women's football family and I believe he can bring a fresh and new approach to the national women's football squad, especially ahead of the Group H action of the 2026 Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers in June. "He will start working with the players at the Malayan Tigress central training camp which is scheduled to begin at the end of May. With the full support of the coaching staff and FAM, I believe the national women's football squad will be able to create a surprise in Tajikistan," she said. Suraya also set an initial target for Cornelli to compete strongly in the 2026 Women's Asian Cup Qualifying campaign and try to qualify for the semi-finals of the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand, this December.
