Woman dies after car sinks into ocean in California. ‘Couldn't get her out'
Bystanders struggled to free a woman from a vehicle that crashed into the ocean but could not rescue her in time, California police reported.
'It's hard because, because I couldn't get her out, nobody could until the crane got there,' Mike Koester, one of the attempted rescuers, told KGTV. 'It's hard to see that happen.'
The car crashed into the ocean at about 4:15 p.m. Friday, June 20, the Coronado Police Department said in a news release. An investigation into the cause of the crash continues.
Bystanders, park rangers, police and firefighters tried to free a woman from the vehicle, but she was pronounced dead, officers said.
'The car entered right in front of the boat my husband and son and friends were on in the water below,' read a comment on the Facebook post by police. 'They all jumped in to try and help but unfortunately the visibility was poor and they were not able to get to the victim. So very sad.'
The vehicle, a yellow Ford Mustang, crashed through a fence before going into the water, KGTV reported.
Coronado is about a 5-mile drive south from downtown San Diego.
