New details in Hampton boating accident that left woman severely injured
HAMPTON, Va., (WAVY) — A woman faces charges in connection to a boat crash in Hampton.
The woman operating the boat that struck a rock pile near Grandview Nature Preserve on Sept. 1, 2024 resulting in serious injuries to a passenger, had a blood alcohol level of .08. That's according to new court documents obtained by 10 on Your Side.
Cortney Cunningham is facing charges including intoxicated boating maiming and operating a boat while intoxicated in relation to the incident.
According to the documents, the vessel was traveling approximately 37 miles per hour, with very little moonlight (2.97% illumination, to be exact), when it struck the pile.
The crash ejected one passenger who sustained life threatening injuries, including a traumatic brain injury, that required her to be placed into a medically-induced coma for two weeks.
The woman may have to undergo rehabilitation for up to a year.
Cunningham, who previously worked as a CrossFit instructor, was given a $5,000 bond.
A preliminary hearing in the case was set for May 20.
