Ang Mo Kio stall sells chicken rice at $1.90
Price, popularity or taste - what does one look out for when deciding on what to order at a food court?
For most Singaporeans, getting the sweetest deal is the deciding factor.
To cater to this crowd, a chicken rice stall in Ang Mo Kio is offering cheap meals, with a plate priced at just $1.90 and a whole roast chicken for only $8.80.
The stall sells up to 500 plates a day.
How does it manage to keep prices low?
Shin Min Daily News reported that according to the Cost of Dining Out: Food Price Index 2.0 (Makan Index 2.0) survey conducted by the Singapore Institute of Policy Studies in 2023, the average price of chicken rice is $3.80.
Nguan Express 88 at Block 704 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8 is offering chicken rice with roasted or steamed rice at just $1.90 per plate.
The chicken rice business operates three outlets, opening its first establishment in the Jurong area over 10 years ago. The company has now opened its third outlet at Ang Mo Kio.
Branch manager Lin Yixing, 43, explained that the owner initially operated a branch at AMK Hub in 2023, but the plan was foiled by high rental.
Initially, the price of chicken rice was set at $3.80 but the price was reduced to $1.90 a fortnight ago. The promotion was a big hit, accelerating sales from 200 to 500 plates a day.
The whole roast chicken, priced at $8.80, comes with two cans of drinks.
Mr Lin shared that the owner's primary business is meat importation, which helps keep the cost of the chicken for the chicken rice stall down.
"We focus on low-profit, high-volume sales," he explained.
"Our goal isn't to compete with others on price or make a lot of money;,we just want people to enjoy a filling meal for less than $2.
"The majority of our customers are elderly residents in the area - over 70 per cent are senior citizens. This pricing also makes it affordable for students and office workers."
