Disposables vapes ban 'could be as profound for public health as smoking ban'
SUNDAY MAIL EXCLUSIVE: Glasgow MP Zubir Ahmed claims today's ban on sale and supply of single-use vapes will have 'material impact' on teen vaping rates. A surgeon-turned-MP has declared that today's disposable vapes ban could have as profound an impact on public health as the 2006 indoor smoking ban. From today, the sale and supply of single-use vapes is prohibited by law with shops facing £5000 fines and potentially up to two years in jail if they flout the rules. Labour MP Zubir Ahmed has said he believes the move will quickly have a 'material impact' on Scotland's teen vaping epidemic – with a quarter of 15-year-olds currently hooked on the nicotine-based gadgets. Glasgow South West MP Ahmed, a transplant specialist who worked in the NHS for 20 years, said: 'I feel like this is of a magnitude of when the smoking ban came in in 2006 in Scotland. 'There was lots of umming and ahhing about whether people would comply – but in the end, they did, because that's what people in Scotland and Britain do. They're generally law-abiding, good people that obey the law.' In the year following the ban on smoking in indoor places, the number of hospital admissions linked to smoking plummeted. Since then, youth smoking rates have fallen to historic lows. But the rise in teen vaping – with candy-flavoured e-cigs like Gummy Bear and Cotton Candy being cynically marketed at kids – has raised fears of a new generation being hooked on nicotine. Ahmed said: 'I think the ban will have a material impact immediately on youth vaping – but more importantly, for a lot of these kids, vapes can be a bridge into smoking and I think we'll finally break that link as well.' It comes as the ban sparked scenes of panic-buying as stores and online retailers tried to shift their stocks at bargain prices. Refillable vapes will still be available after today however tens of thousands of Scots are thought to have been stockpiling their favourite disposable vape flavours. Of Scotland's estimated 150,000 users of disposable vapes, around a quarter (27 per cent) have been stashing up to nine weeks' worth, a recent OnePoll survey suggests. There were reports of shops offering single-use vapes at 'everything must go'-style discount prices. One Spar store in Alloa told LBC Radio of a buying frenzy after they cut prices to three boxes of vapes for £30 – which with 10 vapes per box, works out at £1 each. It comes amid warnings that despite the landmark ban, the environmental toll of single-use vapes – which are difficult to recycle and contain critical materials like lithium batteries – will continue to be felt. In the UK, an estimated 8.2million vapes are thrown away or littered every week – or 13 vapes per second – according to Material Focus. Scott Butler of the anti-waste group said: 'The threat of a 'vapocalypse' remains and new big puff and pod vape models are already contributing to an environmental nightmare.' Gillian Martin, Scotland's acting Net Zero Secretary, said: 'Scotland was the first nation in the UK to commit to taking action on single-use vapes. 'This change to the law fulfils a Programme for Government commitment and will help tackle the threat that single-use vapes pose to our environment as well as to our public health.' Meanwhile, self-styled sustainable vaping firm Riot Labs have produced data this week suggesting more than a quarter of a million Scots are hoarding used disposable vapes in cupboards, drawers, pockets and cars as they're unsure how to dispose of them. They've teamed up with Scots eco campaigner Laura Young - who spearheaded the grassroots campaign to ban the devices in the UK - to tell users what to do with their old e-cigs. Their advice includes using online tools like Recycle Your Electricals to find your nearest drop-off point for old disposables, not trying to dismantle vapes yourself, and not sticking them in the regular bin where the batteries pose a fire hazard. Laura said: "Disposable vapes are the poster child of wasteful design, packed with precious materials, designed to be used once, then tossed. This ban is a vital victory for our environment and a wake-up call to the industry. "We cannot continue normalising single-use electronics that pollute our streets, endanger our health, and waste critical resources like lithium. "With the UK Government now taking decisive action, it's time to clear out our drawers, recycle properly, and use this moment as a blueprint to challenge other throwaway products."

‘I set very strong boundaries for myself' - Lady Zamar channels life lessons into powerful music
Despite any controversy that may have followed her she remains unshaken. She's best known for her smile and soothing voice - with a career spanning multiple hit singles and albums that have earned her a loyal fan base. Yamikani Janet Banda a.k.a Lady Zamar is a South African singer-songwriter and house vocalist, she hails from Thembisa and grew up in Mamelodi, Pretoria. Lady Zamar rose to fame in 2011 when she was still a duo with Junior Taurus, their debut album 'Cotton Candy' was released in 2015. This album garnered the spotlight ultimately laying the foundation for Lady Zamar's solo career. Her first solo album 'King Zamar,' debuted in 2017, solidifying her status as a solo artist and swiftly earned gold and double platinum certification. Following this accomplishment, her second album 'Monarch,' further showcased her musical ability and flexibility. And she has been releasing more hit songs and albums since then, including her latest single 'Russian Roulette.' Read more | Amalanga Awafani star Fanele Zulu on balancing family life and rising TV career In a conversation with DRUM, Lady Zamar described this chapter of her life as creative and embracing whatever's in store for her. 'I think I'm focused on global appeal right now, and I'm focused on repositioning myself as a storyteller, that tells stories that are relevant to people right now. This new chapter is about me being a visionary as well, in terms of taking risks in the music and taking risks in the type of stories that I'm telling as well.' Speaking on new music she says that her new sound is a result of having learnt to trust her voice and storytelling 'My first single, Russian Roulette, really encapsulates that I am in a more playful spirit, but it's still a place of speaking, writing and creating music from a place of understanding, reflection, and I'm just in a place where I'm willing to embrace what's coming,' she explained. Read more | EXCLUSIVE | Emtee celebrates rising like a phoenix after Metro FM award win - 'I have no regrets' Lady Zamar also shared some valuable lessons she's learned from her past relationships and how they've influenced her music and personal growth. 'I've become more aware of who I am. I no longer just give people the space to just come in and out of my life as they will, and that has translated into music the same way, I don't allow people to tell me how I should live my life, in terms of how I should write the kind of stories I put out. I'm not allowing anyone to shape my narrative for me. I'm doing it myself and I'm allowing myself the freedom and the grace that I expect other people to give me, and I give them that grace as well.' Read more | WATCH | A demure international collab between SA's Lady Zamar, Nigeria's Timicrox and America's Elle B She says that in order to bring balance into her life, she separates her true self from the brand that she has created. 'The most effective way of doing it for me is to switch off. I switch off anything and everything. I treat my work as work. I treat my brand as work. As much as it's a very big part of who I am as a person, it is a part that I don't live 24-7. I allow myself to spend time with family, with friends. I do stuff that makes me happy. I'm very quick with enjoying my life, basically. I also don't allow myself to be too concerned about people's opinions of me. 'There's a saying that I recently learned, 'if you can't take advice from someone, don't take criticism from them.' If a person can't give me any valuable advice and any valuable insight into something that I'm busy with or doing, I don't usually pay attention to them. I respect everyone's opinion. However, I don't allow them to penetrate into the innermost parts of me and affect my work. I set very strong boundaries for myself, my team, my family, and also the people that I consider family, which are my fans.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Lady Zamar (@lady_zamar) 'Honestly, if it doesn't make me feel good whether it's something that requires a lot of concentration or a lot of pressure, or something that requires for me to indulge or to engage in it more, I will still apply myself without allowing myself to get overrun by that activity itself.' Read more | Meet Nhoza Sitsholwana, a traditional African fusion genre singer Lady Zamar has also shared some of her fondest milestones with us. 'What I'm most proud of, is the brand that I have. I'm very proud of the work that has been put into it. I think a lot of people have contributed to who I am and where I am today. Even those whose relationships I no longer have or whose favour I no longer have, and those who do not have my favour either, everything for me has been monumental. You lose some, you win some, but if you look at everything as a lesson and if you allow yourself to see the good in what someone has brought, even if it's not nice, you get to appreciate the whole of you. The reputation that I have as a performer, I'm very, very proud of that and I'm grateful for it,' she giggled. The process of creating her latest single, 'Russian Roulette' was tedious and fun she says. 'Russian Roulette is a single from an upcoming album. It's going to be out later on in the year. The process of creating it was kind of simple; I wanted to create a song that was fun and simple. I wanted to be able to dance to it first, you know? I like to be the first person to experiment with my own sound.' She is excited about the album she will be releasing. 'I've been recording this particular album for over a year now in terms of recording, mixing, and mastering. So, this is the first of a beautiful body of work that I hope you guys will enjoy later on in the year,' she smiled.

List of BigBang's Daesung greatest musical hits
DAESUNG, also known as D-Lite, has had an instrumental role in shaping the legacy of South Korea's pop group BigBang. Since debuting as a member in 2006, the 36-year-old has acted as the group's main singer, serving as the vocal backbone in many of the group's songs. But aside from his contributions to the group's discography, Daesung has also delivered a remarkable array of hits on his own as a solo artiste. In conjunction with his upcoming D's Wave concert in Resorts World Genting next month, here is a curated list of his most memorable songs. Look at Me, Gwisun (2008) Released as his first digital single, Look at Me, Gwinsun is a fun and playful declaration of love for a woman named Gwisun. Written to a trot melody, the lyrics are straightforward and playfully repetitive, describing Daesung's feelings of happiness, anticipation and desire for Gwisun. While it is Daesung's debut song, his fellow band member G-Dragon was actually the mastermind behind the song. It was created after G-Dragon was dumped during a parody blind date on KMTV's Idol World in 2007. He wrote it as a joke to the woman, whose name was Um Gwi Seon. Eventually, it became Daesung's debut single and a noraebang classic (karaoke song) for many South Koreans. Cotton Candy (2010) A shift from his debut single, Cotton Candy takes on a calmer and softer musical style. The ballad showcased the singer's ability to deliver a charismatic and heartfelt tune, highlighting his husky yet warm vocals. Fans surprisingly were able to download the tune for free for the first three days of its release. The marketing tactic seemed to have worked as it became his first debut on Korea's music chart Gaon Digital Chart, debuting at number six. Baby Don't Cry (2011) This is another heartfelt ballad from Daesung. A tune from BigBang's fourth EP Tonight, it features Daesung's vocals solely. Throughout the four-minute tune, the singer offers comfort to listeners who are going through a tough time. The lyrics are a gentle plea for listeners to find solace and hope despite their current struggles. Daesung assures them that brighter days are ahead, though things may seem bleak at the moment. Shut Up (2014) An anthemic rock ballad, Shut Up is from Desung's sophomore Japanese album D'slove. Following BigBang's hiatus in 2012, Daesung extended his solo activities in Japan, releasing his debut album D'scover. D'slove was a follow-up effort, featuring various Japanese tracks such as Shut Up. Written by fellow member G-Dragon, the tune does Daesung's artistry justice as it showcases the strength and emotional depth in his voice. To date, it is among the most popular tracks in his discography, having over one million streams on Spotify and two million views on YouTube. Home Sweet Home (2025) Speaking of high-streamed singles, Daesung's recent collaboration with G-Dragon and Taeyang was another highlight in his career as a solo artiste. Serving as the second single from G-Dragon's third album, Home Sweet Home marked the members' first collaboration as a trio. The track, characterised by its nostalgic and heartfelt lyrics, signalled the group's return after a long hiatus. Their performance at the 2024 Mama Awards further proved their continued relevance and legacy as members of BigBang and individual artiste, as fans were left eager for more. Universe (2025) Universe is the first introduction to Daesung's new musical chapter. After 19 years in the Korean music scene, the Seoul native finally released his first solo Korean-language mini album D's Wave. The project includes eight songs and Universe is its lead. A pop-rock track, lyrics to the song convey a message of embarking on a journey to find one's own path towards a better world. The music video features Daesung performing on a cosmic-themed stage, floating as if drifting through the universe. Thanks to its release, Daesung has earned an additional spot on the Gaon Digital Chart as a solo artiste. Concert at Resorts World Genting Fortunately, Malaysian fans will get to witness and experience Daesung's new musical era, as the BigBang member is returning to Malaysia with his D's Wave 2025 Asia Tour. The concert will take place on June 7 at the Arena of Stars in Resorts World Genting. Daesung promises a night filled with thrilling music and high-energy performances. Tickets prices range from RM388 to RM988.
