Zak Starkey Clarifies That He Was Not Fired From The Who (Twice) But Rather ‘Retired'

The see-saw story of The Who's drummer chair continued to tilt over the weekend when former, then current and then former again time keeper Zak Starkey clarified that he had not been fired from the band but rather 'retired.' The 59-year-old son of Beatles drummer Ringo Starr and in-demand session player wrote in an Instagram post on Monday (May 26) that he'd had a nice chat with singer Roger Daltrey clarifying what appeared to be his recent second sacking in as many months. 'NOISE&CONFUSION!!!! I had a great phone chat with Roger at the end of last week which truly confused both of us!!! Rog said I hadn't been 'fired'…I had been 'retired' to work n my own projects,' Starkey wrote. 'Rog said 'Oh!' and we kind of left it there- On good terms and great friends as we have always been . Gotta love these guys. As my mum used to say 'The mind boggles!!!'' It's been a wild ride lately for Starkey, who has worked with everyone from Oasis to Johnny Marr, the Icicle Works and his dad's All-Starr Band over years in addition to recording sessions with dozens of other rock and reggae acts. Ahead of their upcoming farewell tour, guitarist Pete Townshend announced last month that 'After many years of great work on drums from Zak the time has come for a change. A poignant time. Zak has lots of new projects in hand and I wish him the best. Scott Devours who has worked with Roger's solo band will join The Who for our Final shows. Please welcome him.' The firing after a nearly 30-year run appeared to surprise Starkey, after reports that Daltrey was not happy with the drummer's performance at a March Royal Albert Hall gig, complaining from stage that Starkey's loud playing was throwing him off. Starkey was then seemingly re-hired just days after Townshend's original announcement, after what the guitarist and songwriter described as 'communication issues,' only to be re-fired on May 18. 'I was fired two weeks after reinstatement and asked to make a statement saying I had quit the who to pursue my other musical endevours this would be a lie. I love the who and would never had quit. So I didn't make the statement,' Starkey wrote after the second firing. 'Quitting the who would also have let down the countless amazing people who stood up for me (thank you all a million times over and more) thru the weeks of mayhem of me going 'in an out an in an out an in an out like a bleedin squeezebox x.' The Who will kick off the U.S. leg of their farewell tour on August 16 at the Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, FL. Morgan Wallen Charts New No. 1 Hits Just Before His Billboard Takeover

In just a few days, Morgan Wallen will almost surely debut at No. 1 on multiple Billboard rankings with his upcoming album I'm the Problem. The project will likely reach the summit on every tally for which it's eligible, and it could generate No. 1 hits across several song rosters — potentially even including the Hot 100. But ahead of his dominating the weekly rankings, Wallen secures a pair of new champions on a handful of Billboard lists, thanks to one final pre-release track. Just before I'm the Problem arrived in full, Wallen shared another tune, which was meant to further generate excitement among American fans. 'Superman,' chosen as the final promotional single, has already become a quick success on two Billboard tallies. The tune launches atop both the Country Streaming Songs and Country Digital Song Sales charts this week. Coincidentally, 'Superman' earns Wallen his seventeenth No. 1 on both the Country Streaming Songs and Country Digital Song Sales charts. He's now amassed 43 placements inside the top 10 on the sales-only list and collected 37 top 10 hits on the ranking of the most-streamed country tracks in America. 'Superman' also debuts inside the top 10 on three other Billboard tallies, in addition to the rankings where it starts at No. 1. It opens at No. 3 on the Digital Song Sales chart, thanks to 4,000 pure purchases, according to Luminate. The track also enters the Streaming Songs and Hot Country Songs rankings at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. 'Superman' falls just shy of reaching the top 10 on the Hot 100, but it doesn't miss the highest tier by much. Wallen's latest offering flies in at No. 16. He's already collected half a dozen top 10 smashes from I'm the Problem, and two other cuts from the set peaked inside the top 20 – and all of them hit the list before the album dropped. Wallen's latest release is one of five tracks from the country star currently charting on the Hot 100 — and it's his highest-ranking among them.

Kenny Chesney Is One Hit Away From Making History

Kenny Chesney has spent decades racking up dozens of hits in the country world, all of which have collectively made him a true superstar. He has long ranked among the most successful names in the history of the genre, and he never stays away from the Billboard charts for long. The icon collects a new hit on multiple rankings this week. As he returns alongside one of country music's hottest newcomers, he inches closer to a milestone that only a handful of superstars will ever come close to. Chesney joined Meghan Moroney on her new single, "You Had to Be There." The tune is expected to serve as the lead single from her forthcoming third album. The track reaches three of Billboard's country-only tallies this week. As it arrives, it pushes Chesney closer to a major milestone. "You Had to Be There" is Chesney's ninety-ninth hit on both the Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts. The track opens at No. 23 on the radio list and No. 25 on the all-consumption ranking, which blends sales, streaming activity, and radio airplay to show which country tunes are the most popular in the U.S. If Chesney can collect just one more win, he will reach 100 smashes on these two tallies. He's all but certain to make it to that number at some point — whether in a few weeks or years from now — as he remains one of the top hitmakers in the genre. "You Had to Be There" narrowly breaks onto the Country Digital Song Sales chart as well, launching at No. 15. It also earns Chesney his milestone sixtieth placement on the Hot 100. On that tally, which doesn't look at any one form of consumption or any one style, the collaboration opens at No. 86. Included in Chesney's 99 Hot Country Songs wins are fifty-five top 10s and twenty-three No. 1s. The singer-songwriter claims the most rulers of all time on the Country Airplay list with 33. He beats both Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton, who jointly sit in second place with 29 apiece.
