Courteney Cox's real Friends tears when plot mirrored own devastating tragedy
Like her Friends character Monica Geller, Courteney Cox fought a devastating and exhausting battle to become a mum It's 30 years since Friends first launched and became iconic TV viewing. With its relatable plotlines and quick wit, the show remains as popular now as it was then. But behind the jokes and camaraderie, it has since emerged that several of the stars were battling their own, personal demons. The late Matthew Perry, who played Chandler Bing, was in the throes of drink and drug addiction - an affliction that would cause his tragic death in 2023. Rachel Green actress Jennifer Aniston has since shared that she was struggling to have a baby with then-husband Brad Pitt, who met his future wife, Angelina Jolie, before Friends finished filming. And the same was true for her on-and-off screen best friend Courteney Cox, who was also battling to start a family with husband David Arquette. Her character Monica Geller spent two seasons trying to have a baby with husband Chandler, but nothing happened and they eventually learned that his sperm had 'low motility' and she had an 'inhospitable womb'. And away from the camera, life was mirroring art as Courteney battled through a "bunch of miscarriages", one of which happened as Rachel gave birth to her daughter Emma. 'That was hard,' she told NBC in 2004 of the emotional scenes that saw her break down. 'Sometimes, like I remember one time I just had a miscarriage and Rachel was giving birth. It was like that same time. Oh my God, it was terrible having to be funny.' When she married David Arquette in 1999, Courteney, now 60, had no reason to suspect they would struggle to conceive. 'Well it was really weird because everyone in my family has kids. I mean, they pop out like it's nobody's business. No one in my family has a problem. So to me, I just thought this would not be a problem at all," she said. 'I get pregnant pretty easily, but I have a hard time keeping them.' She was told her body produced an anti-body that attacked the fetus and decided to undergo two rounds of IVF - the second of which brought her daughter Coco in June 2004, just two days before her 40th birthday. 'So now I decided to do in vitro and I did that twice. And then, give myself shots of heparin everyday - that's a blood thinner. Take a baby aspirin," she shared. Years later she discovered the exact cause after being diagnosed with a MTHFR gene mutation which alters how the body methylates and raises the risk of miscarriage-causing blood clots. Coco is now 20 and Courteney has previously spoken about wanting to try for a second child with fiancé Johnny McDaid. 'I would love to have a baby now,' she told New Beauty in 2017. 'I mean, I could carry someone else's egg. I may be one of the older people doing it, but I would love to [with Johnny],' she said. 'I know it's crazy, but I would.'

Matthew Perry was 'in love with' Courteney Cox - but stuck to casting rule
As Erik Fleming is sentenced in relation to the death of Friends star Matthew Perry, the Mirror takes a look at the sitcom icon's allegedly strong feelings for his on-screen wife, Courteney Cox The death of Matthew Perry shocked and saddened people across the globe, many of whom had felt they'd known his most famous character, Chandler Bing. Friends icon Matthew was just 54 years old when, on October 28, 2023, he died in the hot tub of his LA home. His death was ruled as an accident from the 'acute effects of ketamine', and followed many years of addiction to drugs and alcohol. Despite his difficulties, Matthew remained a source of inspiration for many and was an outspoken advocate for rehabilitation. And he never forgot the five castmates he rose to fame with as a young actor, with one member of the gang holding a particularly special place in his heart. Now, Erik Fleming, one of the five people charged in relation to Matthew 's death, is due to be sentenced. Fleming, 54, pleaded guilty in August to one count of conspiracy to distribute ketamine as well as one count of distribution of ketamine resulting in death. He had initially been due for sentencing on October 30, but this date was delayed. Those who knew Matthew best will no doubt be recalling happier times with the gifted actor, remembered for his comic timing and magic onscreen chemistry with Courteney Cox, who played his onscreen wife. Poignantly, it's been reported that Matthew's love for Courteney were real both on and off the script. READ MORE: Friends' Janice actress describes sweet encounter she thinks was 'sign' from Matthew Perry During their time together on the wildly popular sitcom, Matthew allegedly harboured strong feelings for Courteney, who was at that point in a relationship with her Scream co-star David Arquette. Sadly, it was reported he was never "able to get over her". Speaking with US Weekly in 2022, sources claimed: "Matthew's always been in love with her. Matthew has never fully been able to get over her." However, things remained strictly platonic between the pair, with the castmates making sure their close friendships never crossed over into romantic territory, unlike their fictional counterparts. Opening up to Access in 2021, Matthew revealed that director Jim Burrows had implemented a "no hookup rule". He explained: "There was a rule that we had, it was really important to the six of us, that we kept a friendship, that we were friends." In his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big, Terrible Thing, Matthew spoke fondly of Courteney, who he described as "cripplingly beautiful". Making sure to include heartfelt messages to his fellow Friends alumni, Matthew also thanked Courteney "for making America think that someone so beautiful would marry a guy like me". In an Instagram statement following Matthew's passing, Courteney paid tribute to her 'funny' and 'kind' co-star, and shared one of her fondest memories of their time working together. Courteney wrote: "I am so grateful for every moment I had with you, Matty, and I miss you every day. When you work with someone as closely as I did with Matthew, there are thousands of moments I wish I could share. For now, here's one of my favourites." She continued: "To give a little backstory, Chandler and Monica were supposed to have a one-night fling in London. But because of the audience's reaction, it became the beginning of their love story. In this scene, before we started rolling, he whispered a funny line for me to say. He often did things like that. He was funny and he was kind." Marking a year since his death, the actress posted on Instagram, "Missing you today and always," alongside photos of the pair. Courteney and her former husband, David, whom she married in 1999, split in October 2010, and, as of 2013, the actress has been in a relationship with Snow Patrol guitarist Johnny McDaid, whom she met through mutual friend Ed Sheeran. Speaking with NBC's Today programme back in October, to mark the one-year anniversary of Matthew's death, his family spoke of how he'd hoped to marry and have children of his own - a dream that never came to fruition. His sister, Emily Morrison, poignantly stated that all her famous brother "really wanted to do was to love and be loved".

Courteney Cox reunites with best friend Jennifer Aniston for a cosy dinner with her boyfriend Johnny McDaid as the actress shares a sweet photo dump
Courteney Cox has reunited with BFF Jennifer Aniston for a cosy dinner with her boyfriend Johnny McDaid as the actress shared a sweet photo dump on Instagram on Tuesday. The Scream star, 60, glowed as she posed for a selfie at the dinner table with her boyfriend and pal. Jennifer, 56, who donned a brown top and gold hoop earrings, looked incredible as she nestled into Courteney's beau for the snap. The duo, who have been friends for over thirty years after meeting on the set of Friends, appeared in high spirits as they beamed for the camera. Elsewhere in the photo dump, Courteney posted a hilarious snap of a turkey hat on her head, recreating the iconic moment when her character Monica in Friends did the same thing. In another snap, the beauty shared two sweet photoss with her daughter Coco, whom she shares with ex husband David Arquette, while they were holidaying in Australia. The pair enjoyed a boat ride as they soaked up the sun and visited the sites of Sydney. The post was finished with another snap with her pals, as she penned alongside it: 'Dumping.' Courteney and her partner Johnny have been going strong since 2013, after they were first introduced by mutual friend Ed Sheeran. The following year they got engaged, but called off the engagement in November 2015 following a temporary split. Although they eventually managed to get back together romantically in 2016, she confirmed in 2019 that they were not actually engaged again. 'He's not my fiance, we were engaged to be married but now we're just together,' she explained during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. 'We broke off our engagement and he moved to England, then we got back together and it's actually better than it was before. Everything's better.' Last year, Courteney revealed Snow Patrol rocker Johnny dumped her one minute into their first therapy session which was aimed at trying to improve their relationship. She said that although it caused her immense pain she is now thankful for Johnny's bravery - saying it has helped change her and their relationship for the better. She told the Minnie Questions podcast: 'Johnny and I broke up five years ago. So three years in we broke up and it was really intense. We broke up in therapy. 'I didn't know it was coming. Whether I should have or not, it was just like we went to this therapist to talk about our boundaries - what we could and couldn't accept about each other. 'Instead, he just broke up within the first minute. And I was like "What?" And we were engaged. And I was so shocked, I was in so much pain, I also don't like surprises. 'And he's an incredible human being, so he wasn't trying to surprise. He was in that much pain in the relationship. 'There was that much that needed to be dealt with that he had to protect himself around his heart. 'So as opposed to like going "F*** him", getting in this mode of anger, I leant in and I did the most work on myself by far.' She added: 'I learned how to reclaim my voice, boundaries, what were my motives in life - like what was my part in this. 'I'm so thankful for that break-up because a, when we got back together it was a different relationship, but also because it really taught me how I operated in the world - what were the things from my childhood that I needed. 'Whether it was to be adored by men. Things that I didn't know how to let go to be in a relationship. To not take things personally. My boundaries, I just went into myself and I had a great therapist. 'I went to the same one. I kept seeing him, the one that we met on the break-up day. And it was brutal to go to his office after that for a while. But then it was great. 'And I'm really thankful a) nothing will ever hurt me that bad again, and b) most of all, most importantly, I completely changed.'
