SWAT team uses old movie theater for tactical training in Covington
COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) — The old Hollywood Theaters building in Covington is set to be demolished, but before that happens, the SWAT team with the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff's Office is utilizing the building for their SWAT training exercises. WGNO's Kenny Lopez spent the day with their tactical team. Throughout the day their SWAT team got real life training for various situations. 'We put a fire hose charge on the the doors. We use that for breaching commercial size doors, big metal doors, things like that. The whole purpose of it is to get into that door, whether it be a hostage situation, an active shooter situation, or something like that. We do it quickly and efficiently,' Lt. Severe weather could impact whether Irish Channel Parade rolls
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Many have already marked their calendars for the Irish Channel Parade, but luck may not be on their side due to severe weather expected on Saturday, which is likely to push the parade back. 'Generally, if it was just rain. People wouldn't have an issue with that. We can all go outside and have fun and some showers, but it's a threat of severe weather. That's a bit more concerning. Severe storms roll through, we have to worry about people's safety,' said WGNO Meteorologist Carrigan Chauvin. Music, food lineup announced for 2025 French Quarter Festival Tracey's bar owner Jeffrey Carreras explains the parade is a great boost for business. 'Everybody wants to be Irish for a day. It's a big day for us. I mean, it's, you know, it's a fun day … We specifically, shortened the menu, corned beef, cabbage, roast beef po'boy what we are known for,' said Carreras. But with the parade's status up in the air, he says his only hope is to see the Irish celebration happen. 'You know, it'll happen. I don't think they're going to cancel it altogether. It's too much involved with this. Sunday, Monday is going to be a beautiful day. So St. Patrick's Day is actually Monday. So the 17th, hopefully, we get a good crowd for that,' said Carreras. Covington Celtic Club Parade rescheduled due to weather As officials with the Irish Channel Parade contemplate when the parade should roll there is a chance for the parade to go on, just on another day. 'Next weekend does look good if that's the time frame that they are looking at for rescheduling. The weekend following, like I said, we're going to see more and more of these setups next week. And following that could also be a little dicey outside given the time of year it is, situations like we're seeing this weekend will occur more often,' said Chauvin. Those with the Irish Channel Parade say if it rains they plan to walk, however with severe thunderstorms they'll reschedule. Covington Celtic Club Parade rescheduled due to weather
COVINGTON, La. (WGNO) — The Covington Celtic Club Parade has been rescheduled due to anticipated severe weather. According to a release from the City of Covington, the parade will now be happening on Sunday, March 16, at 11 a.m., with streets closing for it at 10 a.m. It's a dog, a book, a beignet in New Orleans Officials also say that the Jewel's Cigar Block Party has been canceled. 'The safety of our residents and visitors is our highest priority. After careful review of weather forecasts in collaboration with the National Weather Service and parade organizers, we have decided to reschedule the parade to Sunday and adjust the start time to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all,' said Covington Police Department Chief Michael Ferrell.
