HBCU National Championship thriving under revamped schedule

The stage is set for the 10th edition of the HBCU national championship game-better known as the Celebration Bowl-and fans no longer have to wait to book their hotels. ESPN has announced that the official date and time of the 2025 Cricket Celebration Bowl will be Saturday, December 13, 2025, at noon ET, live on ABC. The Celebration Bowl, which pits the champions of the MEAC and SWAC against one another, has become the definitive showdown for HBCU football supremacy. And last year's edition delivered in a big way, both on the field and in living rooms across the country. In 2024, the Celebration Bowl marked its first appearance under the newly revamped College Football Playoff schedule. The change shifted the game up by a week, creating ripple effects that sparked debate within the HBCU football world. Critics pointed out that the MEAC champion had a built-in advantage-an additional two weeks to prepare. The SWAC champion had to turn around and play immediately after their conference championship. Still, none of that mattered once the pads started popping. Jackson State, fresh off their SWAC title, steamrolled South Carolina State in a 28-7 statement win to capture their first Celebration Bowl crown. The Tigers also became the second straight SWAC program to hoist the trophy. Flipping a script long dominated by MEAC programs. Off the field, the numbers told a success story of their own. The 2024 Celebration Bowl pulled in 2.1 million viewers on ABC. That number was up 37% from the previous year's 1.5 million audience, according to ESPN. Much of that spike can be credited to the strategic time slot. The noon ET kickoff faced virtually no competition from other college bowl games or NFL matchups. A luxury not afforded in previous years, when scheduling overlap diluted viewership. Attendance for the HBCU national championship has also remained solid, with over 40,000 fans packing Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta for the 2024 edition. That kind of turnout, paired with rising TV numbers, shows that the Celebration Bowl isn't just surviving in the ever-changing college football landscape, it's thriving. As anticipation builds for the 2025 reveal, one thing is clear. The Celebration Bowl has firmly cemented itself as the crown jewel of HBCU football. And with year 10 on the horizon, all eyes will be on what's next. The post HBCU National Championship thriving under revamped schedule appeared first on HBCU Gameday. Rickey Smiley speaks on Omega Psi Phi, Caleb Wilson

The post Rickey Smiley speaks on Omega Psi Phi, Caleb Wilson appeared first on ClutchPoints. While appearing on Jemele Hill's Spolitics podcast, comedian Rickey Smiley expressed his disappointment in his fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., following the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson, who died during an unsanctioned ritual while trying to join the fraternity. Smiley had a lot to say about how things have changed within the fraternity. He went on to say that the founders would not support the way things are today and likely wouldn't have selected many individuals who are currently members of Omega Psi Phi. Smiley, who is also a member of other organizations, including Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity and the NAACP, stated that the last five physical altercations that he has been in have been with other members of Omega Psi Phi. 'In 25 years in the frat, I have never put my hands on anybody,' he said, stressing that the current behavior shown by fraternity members is 'wrong.' Smiley also revealed that he spoke with Wilson's dad following his death to offer his condolences, stating that he is also a dad who has lost a son. Wilson's dad, who is also a member of Omega Psi Phi, says that Smiley was the first person from their fraternity to offer their condolences. Wilson died back in February during an off-campus, unsanctioned fraternity ritual while pledging Omega Psi Phi. He collapsed after being punched in the chest repeatedly by fraternity members. Caleb McCray, Kyle Thurman, and Isaiah Smith were arrested in connection to Wilson's death. A Baton Rouge district judge recently set bond conditions for McCray. The judge set McCray's bail at $25,000 for criminal hazing and $75,000 for manslaughter during the March bond hearing. If McCray is found guilty of manslaughter, the most serious accusation, he may face a maximum sentence of 40 years. He is also required to use a phone tracker instead of the traditional ankle monitor. Additionally, McCray is ordered to have no contact with any co-defendants involved in the case. In addition, he must use a phone tracker rather than the conventional ankle monitor. McCray is also prohibited from contacting any of the other defendants in the case. Smiley was initiated into the Psi Rho grad chapter in 2000. Related: Howard University makes huge NIL move before football season Related: 2025 Cricket Celebration Bowl date & time revealed

Local news outlet 10 On Your Side tried reaching out to students at Hampton, but many were concerned about the consequences of being on camera. One student did agree to speak anonymously. 'I did not want this to tarnish the reputation of the university,' he said. 'I felt like the entire situation was unfortunate.' In the viral video, the student is seen addressing the administrator at their office about the 'sexual relationship' in exchange for grades. After stating they had no idea what the student was talking about, they walked away. When contacted by 10 On Your Side, Hampton sent the news outlet a statement stating that 'they will not comment on personnel matters because they are confidential.' 'I just hope that it gets handled through the proper channels and that we can get back to some normalcy,' the student we spoke with said. 'Even with a bad actor, I don't think that diminishes anything that this university has stood on for over a century.'
