Murder charge: Apple Valley man fatally struck pot seller with SUV during deal in Bloomington

An Apple Valley man set up a marijuana deal in Bloomington last week and fatally struck the seller with his SUV while driving off with the drug, a criminal complaint filed Tuesday alleges. Lamont Eugene Williams Jr., 21, faces second-degree unintentional murder while committing a felony in connection with Thursday's hit-and-run killing of a 21-year-old man near his home in the 8300 block of 11th Avenue on Bloomington's east side. He remains at the Hennepin County Jail ahead of a Wednesday first court appearance on the charge. The victim, whose name has not been released by authorities, died of blunt force trauma at Hennepin County Medical Center. His injuries included a brain bleed, skull fracture, broken collarbone, rib fractures, and cuts and bruising on the lower back and elsewhere consistent with road rash, the complaint says. Police were called to the area on a report of the man lying in the street with broken bones and difficulty breathing. Officers found the man, identified in the complaint by his initials A.L.G., on the ground near a snowbank. He was gasping for breath. One of A.L.G.'s family members told officers that A.L.G. said 'Monty,' later identified as Williams, had contacted him and that he agreed to sell Williams some 'weed,' the complaint says. A.L.G.'s mother said she was sitting on the couch when he told her he was going outside to sell something. About two minutes later, she heard yelling. She looked outside and saw A.L.G. leaning into the passenger side of a small, dark-colored SUV. He appeared to be halfway in the vehicle. She said she could see A.L.G. and someone inside the SUV pulling a backpack back and forth. As this was happening, the SUV accelerated and she shouted to her other children. They went outside and found A.L.G. lying in the street a few houses down from their house. Williams was arrested early Friday near his home; he'd been driving a grey Jeep Renegade registered to his mother, the complaint says. Officers found in the SUV a 9mm handgun on the front passenger seat and a black Coach backpack with plastic bags of marijuana that totaled about 264 grams, or more than 9 ounces. A search of Williams' phone showed the two men exchanged messages through Facebook about A.L.G. selling him 'smoke.' A.L.G. sent Williams his home address. The complaint says Williams wrote to A.L.G. at 8:31 p.m., 'Here.' Four minutes later, Williams wrote, 'I'm in this Jeep.' Location data of Williams' cellphone showed it moved east from the area of A.L.G.'s home at 8:37 p.m. Six minutes later, Williams messaged A.L.G.: 'My fault gang I had to.' FBI: Hoax by two young children responsible for diverted Sun Country flight to Mexico

After a Mexico-bound Sun Country flight from the Twin Cities diverted to El Paso earlier this week, FBI officials said that the security concern that caused the plane to land in Texas stemmed from a hoax by two young children on the flight. The online statement said that after a threatening handwritten note was found on the plane Wednesday saying 'You Are All Going to Die, Help Me,' it was reported to Sun Country personnel on the airliner and resulted in the unscheduled landing. The U.S. Attorney's Office of the Western District of Texas will not press charges against the children, said the statement by FBI Special Agent in Charge John Morales. The FBI thanked the 156 passengers on board Flight 593 to Mazatlán for their patience as they investigated the 'circumstances behind the reported safety concern.' The Sun Country passengers departed El Paso for Mazatlán on Thursday, the airline said. Community invited to line procession route from St. Paul Officer Reilly's funeral to cemetery

The St. Paul Police Department is encouraging the community to line the procession route from Officer Felicia Reilly's funeral to the cemetery Monday. Reilly, 67, had to retire after she was assaulted on duty 15 years ago. She sustained a brain injury and her condition deteriorated over the years. Her last wish was for a line-of-duty funeral, her family said in a letter to Police Chief Axel Henry. Reilly died Sunday and Henry wrote to police department employees on Tuesday that she will receive 'the full honors she deserves.' Visitation will begin 9 a.m. Monday at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church, 1669 Arcade St. in St. Paul, with the funeral service at 11 a.m., which Reilly's family says the public is invited to attend. The church will be livestreaming the service at Streets around the church will be closed. The procession is expected to leave the church, which is at Arcade Street and Larpenetur Avenue, at noon or shortly after. It will go west on Larpenteur Avenue from the church to Roselawn Cemetery, 803 W. Larpenteur Ave. in Roseville, for interment. St. Paul man admits to throwing fatal punch outside East Side bar

A St. Paul man has admitted to punching a Coon Rapids man outside an East Side bar, causing him to hit his head on the ground and die. Pheng Vang, 39, pleaded guilty on Monday in Ramsey County District Court to first-degree manslaughter for throwing a single punch that killed Peter Nguyen, 38, outside the Far East Bar & Restaurant in the Payne-Phalen area on March 23. Vang reached an agreement with the prosecution that includes a 360-day sentence in the Ramsey County workhouse and 100 hours of community service. He remains free on $25,000 bond ahead of his May 12 sentencing. Nguyen was found unresponsive on the sidewalk outside the bar at Arcade Street and Case Avenue just before 1 a.m. He died soon after at Regions Hospital of a closed-head injury. According to the criminal complaint, a witness told police that Nguyen 'had some kind of issue with people who had been attending a birthday party at the bar' and was 'squaring up to fight' with a man outside. Another man came up along the side of the man Nguyen was going to fight and struck Nguyen with his fist, causing Nguyen to fall to the ground. Through additional witnesses and surveillance video, police identified the man who delivered the punch as Vang. In an interview with police, Vang said he was starting to leave the bar when 'an argument began to escalate' on the corner and he walked up to defuse the situation. Nguyen reached down to pick up his shot glass and Vang punched him once, striking him in the shoulder and face, the complaint says. Vang said he believed he was defending the man Nguyen was going to fight, who is a relative of his. After Nguyen fell to the ground, Vang left the area. Nguyen 'played a huge part in taking care of my mother, brother, and little sisters,' a brother of his wrote on a GoFundMe fundraiser for his funeral and to help the family. He said Nguyen 'did his best and did everything he can to keep food on the table and roof over their heads.'
