Minneapolis crime rate shows 'significant decrease' in early 2025
Crime in Minneapolis has shown a "significant decrease" in early 2025 in comparison to 2024, according to recent data shared by city officials. The city said the biggest drops in crime are robberies (down 47%), carjackings (40%) and homicide (40%). There have been seven homicides so far in Minneapolis this year, compared to 11 at the same point last year. Crime is also below the 3-year average in Minneapolis in all but two categories. Other crime decreases also include: 32% reduction in gunshot wound victims 24% reduction in auto thefts 18.1% reduction in shots fired calls 15.4% reduction in weapon law violations 11% reduction in aggravated assaults 9.5% reduction in burglaries 8.1% reduction in vandalism 8.1% reduction in stolen property 6.2% reduction in larceny and theft Crime has been steadily falling nationally following a spike that started with the COVID-19 pandemic, peaking in 2021. The updated stats were hailed by the office of Mayor Jacob Frey, who partially credited the drop to crime reduction and violence prevention initiatives implemented by Minneapolis Police Department, citing its Crime Pattern Response Protocol, Curfew Task Force, and Late-Night Safety Plan. City officials claim that since the Curfew Task Force was implemented in September to help reduce crime amongst youths, there has been a 66% reduction in offenders. "Thanks to the leadership of Chief O'Hara, Commissioner Barnette, and the dedicated officers of the MPD, we are seeing real progress in driving down crime. But the work isn't done, and we're not letting up – we will keep pushing forward to make Minneapolis the safest city it can be," Frey said. Police seeking trio wanted for 'brazen' Tuesday crime spree in Minneapolis
Police in Minneapolis are seeking three suspects wanted in connection with a "brazen" series of crimes in the city Tuesday morning. Minneapolis Police Department said the same trio are believed to have carried out six crimes in less than two hours early Tuesday. Between 5 a.m. and 6:50 a.m., police received reports of an aggravated robbery and a burglary – both involving victims being shot – a carjacking, a shots-fired incident, and another burglary. Witnesses reported between 3 and 4 male suspects carrying out the crimes while traveling in a white sedan. The first incident was captured on Ring camera, with the two of the three suspects breaking into a garage on the 4100 block of 25th Avenue South. As the suspects returned to the white sedan, they fired shots at a 54-year-old man who was looking out of the window at a nearby house. The man suffered life-threatening gunshot wounds. "The brazen violence committed by these individuals cannot be tolerated by anyone in our city,' said MPD Chief Brian O'Hara. "Anyone who knows these individuals is asked to immediately provide that information through our tip lines or through CrimeStoppers. Together, we can all work to see that these individuals are caught." Minneapolis Police Department initiated its Crime Pattern Response Protocol at 5:41 a.m., which dedicates all available law enforcement resources not assigned to priority calls to locating the suspects, with help from the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and the Metro Transit Police Department. As of Tuesday evening, no arrests have been made, but the white sedan they used has been recovered. Here are the six incidents: 5:04 a.m. – Burglary and shooting at 4100 block of 25th Avenue South Three suspects broke into garage and then fired shots towards a house as they were leaving, striking a 54-year-old man who was looking out of an upstairs window. He suffered a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound and was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. "There were other reports of possible forced entry into garages in the area," MPD says. 5:16 a.m. – Carjacking at 5100 block of 34th Avenue South A 29-year-old man was carjacked at gunpoint, with four male suspects arriving in a white sedan, taking the man's grey SUV. The suspects left in both vehicles, with the Mazda later recovered. 5:32 a.m. – Burglary at 4026 26th Ave. S. A garage door was forced open by 3-4 suspects who arrived in a white sedan. One of them was armed. Nothing was taken, but one of the doors had signs of forced entry. 5:41 a.m. – Shooting at 2100 block of East Lake Street A 25-year-old man was found with a potentially life-threatening gunshot wound inside a Lake Street house. He said he had been shot near the 2300 block of 32nd Street East. "Preliminary information indicates that he was shot during a robbery involving three male suspects in a white sedan," MPD says. 6:17 a.m. – Burglary at 4915 31st Ave. S. A garage door was forced open at the address, with witnesses giving a similar description to the suspects in the other incidents. "A vehicle inside the garage had a smashed window. There is no known loss. The occupant of the home was not injured." 6:49 a.m. – Shots fired at 4908 32nd Ave. S. Occupants of a white sedan parked in an alley "got out and fired off shots." Nobody was injured. The suspects are described as follows: Suspect 1: Male wearing a black jacket over a white shirt, blue or black jeans, black shoes, and black gloves. Suspect 2: Male wearing a blue hoodie or jacket over a white shirt, black jeans with rips or a white pattern on the shins and knees, white Nike shoes, and a black winter cap. Suspect 3: Male wearing a black mask, black hoodie, or jacket over a white shirt, black or dark grey jeans, white gloves, and black shoes.
