PGA Tour rookie goes low to share Canadian Open lead
PGA Tour rookie Cristobal Del Solar and Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen each posted a nine-under-par 61 to share the first-round lead at the Canadian Open. Olesen and Chilean Del Solar took full advantage on Thursday of TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in the venue's PGA Tour debut. They own a one-shot lead over Cameron Champ. Jake Knapp is alone in fourth at seven-under 63. Shane Lowry of Ireland went out in five-under 30 on his way to a round of 64. He is tied for fifth with Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard and Trey Mullinax. The low Canadian for the day was Taylor Pendrith (65), who set the clubhouse lead in the morning wave before several players passed him by. Defending champion Robert MacIntyre of Scotland is among the several golfers knotted with him in eighth place at five under. Harrison Endycott (67) is the highest-placed Australian, while Aaron Baddeley made a 70. The only other Australian in the field, Karl Vilips, shot a three-over 73 and like Baddeley (tied 96th) will struggle to make the cut. Del Solar birdied 10 of his first 16 holes to pass Olesen for the outright lead and threaten a score of 59. However, he failed to get up and down from the bunker at the par-4 17th hole and took his only bogey of the day. He missed a 15-foot putt for birdie for the outright lead at No.18. Del Solar's claim to fame is a round of 57 he shot on the Korn Ferry Tour in February last year. It was the lowest round ever recorded in a PGA Tour-sanctioned tournament. Olesen, meanwhile, has eight wins on the DP World Tour but is seeking his first title in the United States. Two-time Canadian champion Rory McIlroy is in danger of missing the cut after shooting a one-over 71, which he ended with consecutive bogeys at Nos.8 and 9. The Northern Irishman is playing for the first time since a T47 finish at the PGA Championship.

OTTAWA, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Denmark's Thorbjorn Olesen and Chilean Cristobal Del Solar set the early pace at the RBC Canadian Open on Thursday as each player carded a nine-under-par 61 to share a one-stroke lead during first-round play of the national championship in Ontario. The United States' Cameron Champ was third on 62, one shot ahead of compatriot Jake Knapp on 63 at the 9.8 million U.S. dollars PGA Tour event at the TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley North Course. The par-70, 7,389-yard public course, 40 minutes northwest of the provincial capital, is hosting the national championship for the first time. Denmark's Rasmus Hojgaard, Trey Mullinax of the U.S. and Ireland's Shane Lowry, the 2019 British Open champion, were equal fifth on 64. Scotsman Robert MacIntyre, the defending champion, was five shots back on 65 in a group of nine players that included Taylor Pendrith, the top Canadian, and England's Danny Willett, the 2016 Masters winner. Had fun with my caddie, and the score kind of took care of itself," said the Chilean, a PGA Tour rookie at 31. "I just want to go and execute each shot. I think everyone kind of sometimes gets ahead of themselves and thinking of the result or whatever. You just want to go out and just hit the golf shots. That's pretty much it. It's very simple to say it, but obviously it's hard doing it. That's kind of what I've been trying to do and trying to find some fun in this game." Olesen, who will play in next week's US Open at Oakmont after earning his spot through 36-hole qualifier held Monday in Toronto, rode a hot putter to card his career-low round featuring an eagle three at the 573-yard 18th, eight birdies and bogey after starting from the 10th hole. "Obviously I played great, but my putting was exceptional today. I definitely holed some long ones as well. It was nice to see everything go in," said the Dubai-based veteran, an eight-time winner on the European Tour. "I didn't actually see the front nine until today. That worked out well maybe not to know any of the holes really. Sometimes you just have a feel of the greens and you just look at it, and you can sort of see the lines easy. That was one of those days for me today, I think." Champ, a three-time winner on the PGA Tour, got to four-under through the first six holes before picking up three more strokes on the back nine in his bogey-free round. "It was very solid. I stayed within myself. I kind of stuck to our game plan as far as how we're going to try to attack this place. I was just very committed out there today," said the 29-year-old California native. "I have no expectations this week, the rest of the year. I'm just trying to play my game and stay within myself. If I can do that, most of the time it ends up decently well." Pendrith, the world No. 36, gave the home fans hope for a Canadian champion when the Ontario native carded four birdies over his back nine, the front nine, after starting his morning round from the 10th hole in wet conditions. "It was pretty wet. The greens were soft, and you really had to control your spin with the wedges coming into the greens and just kind of be smart with where you need to land the ball. So that made it tricky," he said. McIlroy also started his morning round on the back nine and got to one-under through 12 holes before faltering down the stretch, carding bogeys on his final two holes. "It was my first outing with a new driver, and I felt like that went pretty well. I hit some drives that I liked and that I liked to see, so that was encouraging," said the Northern Irishman who won the Masters in April to complete his career Grand Slam. "Missed a couple of greens and didn't get them up-and-down, especially those last couple holes. Overall, I'm actually pretty happy with how I played. Obviously need to go a little bit lower tomorrow and over the weekend to have a chance."

CALEDON, Ontario (AP) — Cristobal Del Solar came off the Korn Ferry Tour with the nickname 'Mr. 57.' He flirted with a 59 late Thursday afternoon in the RBC Canadian Open. Ten under with two holes left on the par-70 layout, Del Solar bogeyed the par-4 17th and parred the par-5 18th for a 9-under 61 and a share of the first-round lead with Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark. 'I was just trying to hit good shots.' Del Solar said. 'I was just trying to stay in the present and have fun. That's what I was trying to do.' Del Solar, the 31-year-old PGA Tour rookie from Chile, and Olsen took advantage of soft greens on the North Course at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley after rain Wednesday night that continued into the morning. Del Solar earned the 'Mr. 57" moniker in February 2024 when he shot a 13-under 57 in the first round of the Astara Golf Championship in Colombia for the lowest score in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. On Thursday, Del Solar had seven birdies in an eight-hole stretch in the middle of the round. The former Florida State player made a 6 1/2-foot birdie putt on the par-3 14th, and ran in a 15 1/2-footer on the par-4 16th to get to 10 under. On the 17th, he hit into a right greenside bunker, blasted 10 feet past and missed the par putt to the right. Needing an eagle on 18 for a 59, he drove into the left rough, then hit his second about 80 yards short of the green. 'I just want to go and execute each shot,' Del Solar said. 'I think everyone kind of sometimes gets ahead themselves and thinking of the result or whatever. You just want to go out and just hit the golf shots.' Olesen eagled the 18th — his ninth hole of the day — and had eight birdies and a bogey on the course hosting the national championship for the first time. 'Obviously, I played great, but my putting was exceptional today,' Olesen said. 'Don't think I missed any putts really out there. I definitely holed some long ones as well. It was nice to see everything go in.' Olesen qualified for the U.S. Open next week at Oakmont on Monday, holing a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole at Lambton in Toronto. 'I took a lot from that last putt,' Olesen said. Afternoon starters held the top eight spots and 15 of the first 18, with Masters champion Rory McIlroy bogeying the final two holes in the morning in a 71. 'Missed a couple of greens and didn't get them up-and-down, especially those last couple holes,' said McIlroy, the tournament winner in 2019 at Hamilton and 2022 at St. George's. Del Solar and Olesen were a stroke off the tournament record of 60 set by Carl Pettersson in 2010 in the third round at St. George's, and matched by Justin Rose in the fourth round in 2022, also at St. George's. Cameron Champ shot a 62, Jake Knapp had a 63, and Rasmus Hojgaard, Shane Lowry, Trey Mullinax and Ricky Castillo were at 64. Knapp shot 59 in March in the first round of the Cognizant Classic.
