Chesapeake PE teacher awarded Crossing Guard of the Year award
CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) – Wednesday marks Crossing Guard Appreciation Day — and a man from Deep Creek Central Elementary School won Crossing Guard of the year!
The award is given out annually by the Virginia Department of Transportation. This year's winner is Matthew Barker, who has worked as a PE teacher at the school for the past seven years.
Barker is also the advisor for the school's AAA Safety Program. With a team of safety patrollers, Barker gets students in and out of the school safely.
10 On Your Side was there when Barker received his award, where he described how he was feeling.
'I feel fantastic,' Barker said. 'Surprised, ecstatic, there's not many words — there's so many words I could use to explain the honor that I've received for the duty that I do extra on top of the job that I already have.'
On top of the crossing guard award, Barker was also named Teacher of the Year!
