Looking for value? Ask a local

Home-made steak and stout pie with chips, peas and gravy. Image: Frank Chemaly Crossways Where: Cnr Dennis Shepstone and Old Howick Road, Hilton Open: Monday to Thursday 11am till late (kitchen 9pm); Friday and Saturday 11am till late (kitchen 9.30pm); Sunday 11am to 9pm (kitchen 4pm, Pizza kitchen 8pm) Call: 033 343 3267 It takes something to fill a large restaurant on a chilly Monday evening. But a fire is blazing in the hearth and the locals are out in force. Monday is pizza special night. Any two large pizzas, excluding seafood come in at R159 - and that includes two complimentary drinks. And boards carrying large pizzas are flying out of the kitchen, they look really good, nice crisp thin bases and generous toppings. The value is incredible. Similar specials on Tuesday take in their pastas. On Wednesday it's burgers, Thursday mix and match and Saturday, steak egg and chips. Sunday's special is a traditional roast with all the trimmings for R120. The inclusion of complimentary drinks offers exceptionally good value. In addition, pensioners get a 10% discount on main courses. Sadly neither Mom or I feel like pizza. We're at Crossways pub in Hilton. I didn't realise the extent of the operation only having eaten in the pub itself, which spills out onto a wide verandah. People were actually sitting there despite the cold. The heaters must have been working overtime. But behind the pub is the main diningroom. There's also a small 'pizza' dining room with the oven taking pride of place which was full. And at the back is a large garden which would be excellent for summer braais. Friendly staff soon found us a spot near the fire, a Scotch for Mom, a good glass of red for me. Video Player is loading. Light meals include wraps, salads and toasties. There's a selection of snack baskets, ideal for soaking up the booze in a communal setting in the pub. These can include anything from calamari and scampi, to spicy chicken wings, riblets, crumbed mushrooms, jalapeno poppers, boerewors, and lamb chops. They all come with chips and onion rings, and offer good value. Starters include everything from a soup of the day, to a variety of ways with nachos. There's the predictable chicken livers, spicy or mild, deep fried brie, and a mussel pot, along with many of the items that make up the baskets. There's also an anti-pasto board and bruschetta. Pepperoni balls with a tomato relish. These were croquettes stuffed with pepperoni and cheese. Image: Frank Chemaly We opted for creamy garlic snails (R89), gratinated in the pizza oven, which we really enjoyed. You could smell that lovely cheesy topping as it hit the table. We mopped it all up with toasted French loaf. The pepperoni balls (R74) - croquettes stuffed with pepperoni and cheese - sounded great on paper, but somehow didn't work in practice. The pepperoni sort of over powered everything. But perhaps that is just me. When I took some of the potato only and dipped it into the excellent roast tomato relish, it worked. So maybe patatas bravas would be an option. For mains there's burgers which feature a home- made 150g patty topped with options like cheese, bacon, pulled pork and featuring an array of different sauces from Jack Daniels to guacamole and sour cream, to mushroom or spicy mayo. You can also build your own. They're all a good R30-R40 cheaper than their Durban equivalents. Then besides the pizzas in evidence everywhere, there's a range of pastas, and then a selection focussed on real pub grub. Think sausage and mash, fish and chips, eisbein and chicken schnitzels. There are a number of steak options - including a beef and reef - and Natal style curries including chicken and prawn, beef, lambs and veg. Oxtail served with mash. Image: Frank Chemaly I opted for their home-made steak and stout pie (R150) which was sizable and enjoyable, even though the stout didn't really come through fully. The chips could have done with a second frying and the gravy was on the Bisto side of things. A pity. Mom's oxtail (R179) lacked the deeply umami flavours one expects of oxtail although the meat was tender. It was more like a bean stew with pieces of oxtail. It was served with a good creamy mash. All things a few technique tips in the kitchen could fix.

Old Paignton shopping centre could become social housing

An old shopping centre site in Paignton could become social housing to provide extra care apartments. New plans by Torbay Council said 91 apartments at the old Crossways shopping centre and a new Day Centre to replace an ageing facility at Hollicombe could be built. Sarah Wallis, a partner in the AR & E Wallis Electrical store across from the site, said she thought the plans would "not help the town". A spokesperson for Torbay Council said if the proposals went ahead they would increase footfall in the area and more people would shop locally. The former shopping centre was demolished in 2023, and its last shop shut in Wallis said: "We would like to have more shops, not just cafés but a variation of shops to bring more into the town."They're going to take away car parking off the street for the access for the site. We just think it is not helping the town." Conservative councillor Chris Lewis, the deputy leader of Torbay Council, said: "91 extra apartments, as opposed to a car park or a derelict shopping complex, which it was, means that those 91 people can go and actually shop in the town centre."What we need is footfall in Paignton, people supporting the local shops and buying things, and by having a scheme like this that's exactly what they will be able to do."If plans are approved, building work could start in April 2026.

Eni Aluko's ex-England team-mate makes public statement on Ian Wright fallout

Former England star Steph Houghton has offered her public backing to Ian Wright as the fallout from Eni Aluko's controversial claims rumble on. Aluko accused Wright of "blocking opportunities for women" on BBC radio - leading to both widespread criticism of her views and support for Wright. She has since apologised. Now Houghton, who spent close to a decade as a team-mate of Aluko with England but hosts the Crossways podcast with Wright, has said praised the "superhero" Arsenal legend for his "unbelievable" work in promoting women's football. During their most recent podcast Wright said: "It's always good to see you Steph, because you make me smile, because it's been quite a tough week." And Houghton quickly stepped in to say: "Ian, can I just say this, and this has not been pre-empted, I think I posted on Instagram. What you have done for our game is unbelievable and you've got to take all the credit that everybody's thrown at you this last week because you are a super-hero. And I love working with you." Wright replied: "I love you Steph. To see you come out publicly like that for me it's just nice. But I just wish... it's not about the individual in the women's game, it's just about the collective. I'm not going to go into it, but I just really appreciate the public support that I got." Aluko's apology was also rejected by Wright. In a social media post last week he wrote: "I have to talk about this week and what's going on, I don't want to endlessly be asked about it. "I've got to say, I'm very disappointed about what Eni has said, she knows how I've helped her, supported her publicly, and I know the previous conversations she's had with me and my management. "I've seen the apology on social media, but I can't accept it, but I also want to move on. For anyone watching this, I really don't need any further social commentary directed on any of this. "The thing about where the women's game is, it isn't about me - it has to be about the collective. Because of the past, we know the men blocked the women's game for 50 years, because of the past we know the game has serious systemic challenges, and it's going to take everyone to help fixes. "So for me, I always give back to the game, it's given me so much. It's never bothered me about who's playing the game, as long as they're playing the game. if you know my story you'll know how much football means to me. "We are the country that invented modern football, so we have a responsibility, to lead the way in women's football. We men are the ones that banned women's football for 50 years, so we have to hold that one. I need to say to everyone who has spoken about it publicly and showed love and support, I say thank you. It's something I do not take for granted." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Eni Aluko's former England team-mate Steph Houghton publicly backs Ian Wright in TV pundits' row

ENI ALUKO'S former England teammate Steph Houghton has publicly backed Ian Wright in the row between the TV pundits. Former Chelsea star Aluko sparked a backlash when she claimed that Arsenal legend Wright was 'blocking opportunities' in women's football. 3 After receiving major criticism for her comments, Aluko backtracked before apologising to Wright - who is widely regarded as a major advocate of the women's game even before its recent surge in popularity. The fan favourite refused to accept Aluko's apology, instead insisting it's time to 'move on.' Aluko has since stepped down from hosting duties at the Women's Football Awards. And now Wright has been publicly backed by England women's hero Houghton. The duo host a podcast together on YouTube called Crossways, which discusses all aspects of women's football. Opening up on the difficult period, a deflated Wright said: 'It's been a bit of an up-and-down week. But at the end of the day, it's all sorted. 'It's always good to see you Steph, because you make me smile. It's been quite a tough week.' This saw Houghton, who played alongside Aluko for the Three Lions, take a public stance by backing Wright and thanking him for supporting women's football. She said: 'Ian, can I just say this, and this has not been pre-empted, I think I posted on Instagram. 'What you have done for our game is unbelievable and you've got to take all the credit that everybody's thrown at you this week because you are a super hero. 'And I love working with you.' 'Don't speak to me like that' - Moment Ian Wright, 61, angrily confronts former Man Utd star before pair are split up 3 This saw Wright beam with delight as he replied: 'I love you Steph. To see you come out publicly like that for me is just nice. 'But I just wish, it's not about the individual in the women's game, it's just about the collective. 'I'm not going to go into it but I just really appreciate the public support that I got.'

Ian Wright refuses to accept Eni Aluko apology

Ian Wright has said he cannot accept Eni Aluko's apology after she accused him of 'blocking' opportunities for women and 'dominating' punditry in football. Aluko said during an interview on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour that Wright should be aware of 'how much he's doing in the women's game' and suggested his presence on punditry hampered the chances of female pundits trying to break into the industry. She has since issued an apology to Wright on social media. Speaking about Aluko's comments for the first time, the former Arsenal and England striker said he wants to move on but added that he could not accept Aluko's retraction. 'I have to talk about this week and what's going on, I don't want to endlessly be asked about it,' Wright said on Instagram. 'I've got to say, I'm very disappointed about what Eni has said, she knows how I've helped her, supported her publicly, and I know the previous conversations she's had with me and my management. 'I've seen the apology on social media, but I can't accept it. But I also want to move on. 'For anyone watching this, I really don't need any further social commentary directed on any of this. 'The thing about where the women's game is, it isn't about me – it has to be about the collective. 'Because of the past, we know the men blocked the women's game for 50 years, because of the past we know the game has serious systemic challenges, and it's going to take everyone to help fix it. So, for me, I always give back to the game, it's given me so much.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ian Wright (@wrightyofficial) Wright then added a 'thank you' to Kayleigh McDonald, the former Stoke City player who told Telegraph Sport how he had been paying for her rehab, which costs £1,700 per month, for an anterior cruciate ligament injury since the start of the year. 'I wouldn't be in a great place mentally if it wasn't for Ian Wright,' McDonald told Telegraph Sport. 'I would probably still be waiting for my surgery if it wasn't for him. For him to do this for me, someone he didn't know, I think there should be more of a spotlight shone on him.' Wright has been a pundit on Lionesses matches for ITV and previously worked for the BBC during the 2022 European Championship. But the 61-year-old has only been a pundit for one Women's Super League match in the history of the competition – this season's game between Arsenal and Liverpool in March. He has been a vocal advocate for the women's game and helped create the Ian Wright Coaching Fund with Barclays in 2023. The initiative was created to increase the number of female coaches at grass-roots level, particularly in under-represented areas, for girls playing football. Wright made a £15,000 donation and as many as 664 female coaches were funded to attend their Level One training course. Wright has a podcast, Crossways, with former England captain Houghton and on it the pair have raised a number of important issues in the women's game. Aluko's apology to Wright came after she denied 'attacking' him. 'Ian Wright is a brilliant broadcaster and role model whose support for the women's game has been significant,' she wrote on Instagram. 'In my interview with Woman's Hour this week, I was trying to make a broader point about the limited opportunities for women in football – whether that's in coaching, broadcasting or commercial spaces – and the importance of creating more space for women to thrive on and off the pitch. 'But it was wrong for Ian's name to be raised in that conversation, and for that I sincerely apologise. I've known and worked with Ian for many years and have nothing but love and respect for him.'
