GTA 6's preposterously gorgeous second trailer has me thinking 'no-one does it like Rockstar' isn't just a compliment, but an omen

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. As you might've noticed by the titanic, earthquake-causing footsteps of an industry giant rolling over in its year-long delay slumber, Grand Theft Auto 6 has dropped a new trailer. And while my rational mind wants to put 'it's a doozy', here, I feel like that's a colossal understatement. Far from just likely melting your computer, GTA 6 looks gorgeous in a way that defies the series' open world scale. The wrinkles on Jason's shirt, the hyper-realism of the evening light playing off the bars on a state prison, the little cracks and imperfections of a 'keep clear' sign that's been artificially made to endure the wear and tear of the dysfunctional society the game's parodying. Even the beer bottles are a new tier of impressive, because why not. I get the same feeling watching this trailer that an Arctic researcher might watching a Lovecraftian horror breach the briny waves. I'm a sailor torn out of the golden age of piracy, staring at a picture of a cruise liner and wondering how it floats. I'm an ant being introduced to the concept of a lawnmower. If I sound like I'm being up this game's fundament, I sort of am—but when some of my colleagues say "no-one does it like Rockstar", I can't help but think of that phrase as an omen of some kind, said in the way you might say: "In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming". This 13-years-in-development creature just isn't something that exists in the normal constraints of the gaming industry. I mean—despite my uneasy feelings and paranoia, borne out of a job that has me able to recite a dozen crushing layoffs from memory, it's clear that big-budget games aren't dead just yet. Assassin's Creed Shadows did quite well for itself, and the big-names in Japan are doing alright. Well, they would be, if tariffs weren't happening. There are also plenty of heavyweight studios with irons in the fire—the next Witcher from CD Projekt Red'll likely shake the firmament, and Death Stranding 2 is looking similarly gorgeous and mystifying. But we're also in the twilight years of several industry giants. While Ubisoft clings on after an extended slump, Rocksteady wobbles after Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Bioware is unrecognisable, and probably won't be making a Dragon Age game again with how much institutional knowledge EA just shed. Bethesda kinda doesn't know how to make a Bethesda game anymore. Every mainline Final Fantasy title Square Enix makes is utterly gorgeous, and unfailingly behaving below expectations anyway. I don't think doom is coming for Rockstar, not in the slightest—it might not even be coming for big-budget games from traditional publishers. But still, there's something in the air. As far as Take-Two is concerned, GTA Online has a thick enough bankroll for the company to take its sweet time. Similarly, when GTA 6 does hit in 2026 (probably), it'll likely be one of the most successful videogames ever made. There's a reason anyone else making games is scrambling to get out from under its shadow. There's also the darker side of the Rockstar pedigree that allows it to do, well, this—Red Dead Redemption 2 had a similar level of proportionately boggling scope, and that game was built off the back of "death march" crunch. Rockstar's promised to be better, and it very well may have done so. Still, even if things've changed, the path Take-Two took to get here isn't a pleasant one. But I think we can agree it's a unique beast, right? Who else gets to comfortably sit on a pile of money while taking 13 entire years to make their next instalment? And who, gosh darnit, is doing it like Rockstar? I can name some studios that're getting close, but if this trailer's any indication, they'll be left two steps behind once more. We'll just have to see. I'm not entirely convinced that blockbusters are on their way out, but if GTA 6 delivers on even two-thirds of the sheer detail and scope it's promising in these trailers, it'll be an architectural marvel, non-Euclidian and impossible to craft for anyone but the big R. And if trends continue, it might be another 14 years before we get anything like it—and who knows where we'll be in 2040. Four New Ways To Battle The Cthulhu Mythos Across Time And Space

The creatures of the Cthulhu Mythos are timeless foes. They were around when humanity first stood upright and they will be around when the last of our most important discoveries crumble into dust. Yet there are those who fight a hopless battle hoping to scrtach out one more day before their darkness consumed the world. Games like Call of Cthulhu, Arkham Horror Card Game and Delta Green give tabetop fans a chance to battle these horrible forces in thrilling ways. Here's a look at their latest offerings along with a new version of a classic party game tainted by the Mythos. These games are available online and through Friendly Local Game Stores. One of the most exciting parts of investigating the Cthulhu Mythos are cases that span different moments in time. Cthulhu By Gaslight is one of the most popular settings for Call of Cthulhu which opens up London in the late Victorian era as a new front for players and Keepers. The 7th Edition version features two new books, one geared for each side of the table. Cthulhu by Gaslight: Investigators' Guide offers players a fantastic resource on the historical details of the era. The rules allow investigators of every social class and how to bring them together for a game of supernatural mystery. It also includes extensive details on the rigid social classes of the era, who was breaking them and why. For more information on the darker side of the era, Cthulhu by Gaslight: Keepers' Guide deals with secret societies and the fascination with the occult many people had at the time. There are also Mythos cults and creatures that can be used in any game. The book rounds out with example scenarios ready to kick off a campaign. Cthulhu's first appearance came in H.P. Lovecraft's short story 'The Call of Cthulhu' pubkished in 1928. One of the segments of the story dealt with a sailor's encounter with The Great Old One on an island city called R'lyeh. The nightmare corpse city sank beneath the waves at the end of the story but it rises once again. The Drowned City Campaign Expansion sends Arkham Horror Card Game players to this horrible place. The storyline changes based on the decks they use and feature a final confrontation with Cthulhu. It's a climactic campaign option that long time fans will love. Players looking for the most up to date additions to their decks should check out The Drowned City Investigator Expansion. There are six new investigators to choose from including two that are entirely new to the Arkham Horror line. This set also introduces specialist cards that key off of specific traits for powerful game effects. Love Letter is a modern classic card game that tests players' powers of deduction in a fast, simple game that's easy to learn. It's a great choice for board game parties or as a game that can be brought to a pub. Arkham Horror: Lovecraft Letter puts a spooky spin on the game play making it a great choice for a Halloween party or fans of scary board games The major change is an extra layer of sanity versus insanity that's a core of many Mythos games. Players have to be careful in playing Mythos cards because while they offer more powerful abilities, they can eliminate a player from a round much more quickly. It's a great choice for fans of the original looking for a new dimension of game play. The agents of Delta Green form a conspiracy within the US Government to keep the world safe from Cthulhu Mythos incursions. This game mixes classic Cthulhu mysteries with modern conspiracies. It also shows the horrible effects a double life has on these brave, doomed humans. The most recent cases have been collected into a volume called God's Hunt. They can be used to expand the game's most recent campaign called God's Teeth or as stand alone investigations. In addition to hunting monsters, the scenarios also deal with real world issues like police corruption and mass shooting.

Lovecraftian Roguelike Cthulhu's Reach: Devil Reef Adds New Character

Cthulhu's Reach: Devil Reef gameplay There's just something so warm, cozy, and charming about a retro-themed indie game with chunky pixels and creepy vibes. Fortunately, that perfectly describes Cthulhu's Reach: Devil Reef, which is getting a brand-new character added to its roster today while still in Early Access. This action roguelike co-op dungeon crawler channels the likes of Hades and Diablo but swaps out the Greek mythology and demons in favor of Lovecraftian horrors. Cthulhu's Reach: Devil Reef is in development by The Fine Arc and published by First Break Labs, it's been in Early Access for exactly one year as of today. The game features up to four-player online co-op multiplayer, or you can play solo, and a really great atmospheric soundtrack. There are lots of weapons and incantation abilities to unlock as you explore the depths of the dungeons. Plus—it runs great on Steam Deck as well and is officially verified. The big news for the game today, in addition to its 15% off sale, is that they're adding a new character named Florence to celebrate Steam's Lovecraftian Days. You can see her in action in her spotlight trailer embedded above. As a fresh character in the game, Florence has all-new visual and audio assets, including voice lines and bespoke animations. It should definitely help add some variety for players, especially in multiplayer, to mix things up a bit more. Not a bad update for Steam's Lovecraftian Days.

The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu: The Next Pride and Prejudice and Zombies—or Something Bigger?

A bold new novel, The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu, reimagines Hemingway's classic by merging literary mastery with cosmic horror, releasing April 1, 2025. 'Hemingway explored a lost generation's existential crisis. Lovecraft delved into humanity's insignificance in an indifferent universe. This novel blends both, revealing, maybe, it's the same story.' — Jorah Kai ATLANTA, GA, UNITED STATES, March 24, 2025 / / -- As Hollywood continues to mine familiar IPs and franchise fatigue sets in, The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu offers something truly rare: a high-concept literary mashup that balances artistic prestige with mass appeal. This genre-bending novel merges Ernest Hemingway's seminal classic The Sun Also Rises with the mythic terror of H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos—two of the most influential literary voices of the 20th century. Releasing April 1, 2025—a century after the original publication—this chilling reimagining has already caught the attention of a top Hollywood agent, with whispers of major star power and global adaptation buzz surrounding a potential feature film or prestige streaming series. A Story Made for Hollywood In 2009, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen and Seth Grahame-Smith surprised readers and filmgoers alike, blending Austen's timeless romance with a zombie apocalypse. The book sold over 1.5 million copies, and the film grossed $25 million worldwide—ultimately finding long-tail success through streaming and digital rentals. It proved audiences crave fresh, genre-blending takes on the classics. The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu is poised to follow a similar path. This mashup merges Hemingway's spare, haunting prose with Lovecraft's cosmic dread, reintroducing the Lost Generation—Jack Schitt, Ro'brt Ctholh'en, Brett Ashley, and Creepy Bill—as they drift through postwar Europe, stalked not only by existential malaise but by an ancient terror on the verge of awakening. A Visually and Sonically Immersive Novel Beyond its genre-bending narrative, The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu features stunning chapter illustrations and a beautifully painted cover that vividly bring the world to life. The book is paired with Sad Songs from an Old Goth in a Tree and three immersive music albums—The Book Soundtrack, Voidwalker, and Sad Songs—created by the author, an existential detective and veteran of global dance music culture, from Burning Man to the Olympics. The result is a multisensory experience steeped in beauty, dread, and catharsis—crafted to captivate fans of art, music, and story alike. Hollywood Eyes the Prize The novel has already piqued the interest of a top Hollywood agent. While details remain confidential, insiders are buzzing over the project's blockbuster potential—as either a prestige streaming series or a $100M feature film. With Cthulhu—one of horror's most iconic and globally beloved characters—at the center, the adaptation carries a built-in fanbase spanning film, games, literature, and comics. The combination of literary prestige and mythic horror could position The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu as the next Pride and Prejudice and Zombies—a genre-bending breakout with both artistic edge and box office potential. Buzz from Major Outlets The book has already earned coverage from Yahoo News, The Associated Press, and a growing number of prominent outlets, highlighting its ambitious concept and cultural relevance. Early reviews are glowing—praising the seamless fusion of Hemingway and Lovecraft, the striking artwork, and the novel's emotional resonance. Critics and horror fans alike are calling it 'deeply creative,' 'visually arresting,' and 'an unforgettable reading experience.' With momentum growing, The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu is fast becoming one of the most anticipated releases of 2025. About the Author The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu is co-authored by Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner Ernest Hemingway and Jorah Kai, the modern minstrel of the macabre. Kai brings a bold, horror-infused lens to Hemingway's classic. Though still emerging in the Western literary landscape, he has a long history in underground and artistic circles and recent cultural impact in China, where he has appeared on national television and reached millions of viewers in his cultural and solarpunk environmental documentary shows. Kai's Diary, his pandemic nonfiction epistolary tale, was an international bestseller and one of the top books in China for 2020. His novel Amos the Amazing, another bestseller in children's steampunk literature, was recently acquired by CQPG—the powerhouse publisher behind Liu Cixin's The Three-Body Problem, now a global Netflix sensation. With China's growing fascination with Cthulhu and Kai's cross-cultural reach, this book is poised to captivate readers across continents and languages. The Sun Also Rises on Cthulhu launches April 1, 2025, and is now available for pre-order in eBook, paperback, and hardcover formats.
