A Moncton man who allegedly stole an RCMP vehicle in New Brunswick and drove it to Nova Scotia last week has been charged with more than 20 offences.
Cumberland County District RCMP and Amherst Police Department officers responded to a report of a stolen RCMP vehicle entering Nova Scotia around 2:32 p.m. on May 16 according to a news release.
Police tried to stop the vehicle on Highway 2 in Upper Nappan, but the driver fled towards Amherst Point on Southhampton Road. Officers used a spike belt on that road, damaging the vehicle.
The suspect travelled westbound on Highway 104 before officers stopped the vehicle near the Fort Lawrence overpass around 2:49 p.m. and arrested him.
There were no reported injuries.
The vehicle was allegedly stolen while an RCMP officer responded to a report of an 'unwanted person' at a Sackville, N.B., hotel.
Kyle Douglas Smith, 37, was charged with several offences in Nova Scotia, including:
theft of a motor vehicle
possession of firearms
possession of property obtained by crime
impaired operation
dangerous operation
mischief
He is also facing charges in New Brunswick.
Smith appeared in Amherst Provincial Court on May 21 and was remanded into custody. He will return to court on June 16.
