Fire-hit dunes 'could take years to recover'
Sand dunes badly damaged in a fire could take years to recover, experts have said. Naomi Kay, manager of Solway Coast National Landscape, said the damage caused to an area of Silloth Dunes at the weekend - roughly the size of two football pitches - was "horrifying" and had destroyed wildlife habitats. Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said it was still investigating the cause of the blaze but warned people of the risk of barbecues and camping stoves in the countryside. Ms Kay said the area was "blackened and horrible to look at" and, while it was hoped new growth would be seen in the area within a year, it could take up to 20 years to recover completely. "We are in the season where everything is growing, birds are nesting and plants are growing," she said. "The area at the moment is blackened and horrible but we should see growth, perhaps nettles dominating, within a year - nothing special. "But it will take five to 10 years for vegetation to come back and even longer for the food chain species to come back. "We could be looking at 10 or 20 years." The fire service urged people who spot wildfires to ring 999 immediately. Follow BBC Cumbria on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram. Cumbria wildfire risk leads to amber alert due to warm weather
An amber alert for increased wildfire risk has been issued across Cumbria due to the warm District National Park Authority (LDNPA) said the warning covered the region for the next day, as parts of the UK face higher than average temperatures. It comes after several wildfires broke out in various locations in the county earlier in April. "Wildfires have the potential to devastate the Lake District landscape, kill animals and ruin habitats," LDNPA said. The authority urged people to "not light fires, take litter home with you and leave no trace".Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service advised those who see a wildfire to: Move to a place of safety and report it by calling 999Do not attempt to tackle the fire yourselfGive as much information as you can including the size of the fire, location, and terrainAlways follow the advice of the emergency services and local authorities Follow BBC Cumbria on X, Facebook, Nextdoor and Instagram.

Seven fire engines are at Michael Douglas Auto Salvage and Scrap Metals on Stainton Road, in Etterby, Carlisle, which has been shut. A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) said Network Rail had been informed due to proximity to the nearby railway line.
