Vermilion County War Museum gets surprise donation

VERMILION COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The Vermilion County War Museum got a surprising donation boost just two weeks ahead of their planned fundraiser. Post 210 Legion Riders in Danville collected $3,000 worth of donations from the community on Saturday. Custard Cup 'scooping' the love to Danville organizations Museum president Larry Weatherford said the money will go a long way in helping them build new historical displays. 'What we're trying to do is to expand and improve the various displays and exhibits that we have, and this will really help us get some mannequins, some clothing and so forth to present what it was really like during a certain period of time — especially in World War II,' Weatherford said. 'And World War II is one of the areas that continues to grow. And we love having this money to help us in that area.' On June 21st, the annual Sparky Songer Memorial Ride will happen. DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — The Custard Cup in Danville is scooping more than just ice cream. Their Scoops of Love campaign collects customer donations to give back to local organizations. OSF's Urbana, Danville medical centers merging to meet 'critical needs' A different group is chosen each month to receive the money. Custard Cup Owner Andrew Seibert said it's a privilege to be able to come together for the betterment of the community. 'It's just really important to me to give back to our community and our customers are embracing that and joining us in that,' Seibert said. On Sunday, Danville Humane Society, St. James Food Pantry and It Takes a Village mentorship were each awarded a few thousand dollars. Danville Humane Society Director Alyssa Julian said the money could not have come at a better time. Potomac gives Make-A-Wish teen a taste of the islands 'We definitely need it,' Julian said. 'Our animals at the Humane Society of Danville, they stay with us until adoption or unless they get really sick and can't get better, so long-term care costs a lot of money whether that's their vetting or food or just keeping a roof over their head.' This is the second year of the program. Last year the Custard Cup was able to give about $16,000 to several organizations. This year, they're on track to donate $20,000.
