German rider Nikias Arndt has undergone surgery on a back injury he sustained in a crash during the Brugge-De Panne cycling race in Belgium, his team Bahrain-Victorious said on Thursday.
The team said that Arndt fractured a vertebrae in the crash shortly before the finish of Wednesday's race.
He is due to start rehabilitation within the next days and Bahrain-Victorious expressed hope that he can be back on his bike within two months.
Organizers were criticised for the course layout in the final kilometres as there had been four crashes which also involved Dutch contender Olav Kooij. Colombian Juan Sebastian Molano won the race.
