What caused Europe's massive power outage?
ALBAWABA - Europe was just hit with a massive power outage that targeted countries such as Spain, France, Portugal, and Andorra. The recent incident caused chaos across the continent, disrupting transportation commutes such as metro stations and airports, and causing an outage for mobile services.
According to Roya News, citing several reports, the disruption is being linked to the European electric grid, but investigations into the matter are still ongoing. Additionally, several other reports have linked a fire that recently erupted in France's Alaric Mountain with claims that it reportedly damaged a high-voltage transmission line.
A fire in the south-west of France, on the Alaric mountain, which damaged a high-voltage power line between Perpignan and eastern Narbonne, has also been identified as a possible cause, Portugal's national electric company REN said. — Cyril Cador (@CyrilCador1) April 28, 2025
On the contrary, many social media users took to platforms such as Musk's X (formerly Twitter) to speculate and debate . Several users swarmed the comment sections, claiming it might've been a cyberattack with Russian hackers being the main suspects. It's important to note that these claims are baseless.
The power outage left millions without power and disrupted many daily activities, such as daily commuting, mobile services, and travelling abroad via airplanes, due to systems shutting down. While power is gradually being restored in some areas, widespread disruptions and uncertainty persist.
Footage of the incident swarmed several social media platforms as individuals shared dimmed metro stations and shut-down traffic lights that caused chaos across Spain's streets.
