Michigan groups sue Plymouth-Canton schools over alleged remarks toward Arab American student

The ACLU of Michigan and the Arab American Civil Rights League filed a lawsuit on Wednesday against the Plymouth-Canton Community Schools District and a teacher, months after an Arab American student was allegedly subjected to humiliation and offensive remarks for staying seated during the Pledge of Allegiance. The federal lawsuit claims that on Jan. 6, the 14-year-old middle school student, who is of Palestinian descent, declined to stand and recite the pledge. In response, the teacher allegedly "disrupted the class and admonished (the student) in the presence of her classmates," according to the lawsuit. The teacher then told the student she was "specifically disrespectful to U.S. military forces and the flag, and that she should stand." The student again declined to stand and recite the Pledge of Allegiance on Jan. 10. The lawsuit alleges that the student approached the teacher after class that day to explain, to which the teacher said, "Since you live in this country and enjoy its freedom, if you don't like it, you should go back to your country." The lawsuit accused the district of failing to protect the student's First Amendment rights. It claims that the student now suffers "extensive emotional and social injuries" as well as loss of sleep, nightmares and stress. "The consequence has been isolation during a period when contact with peers is highly valued and necessary for D.K.'s wellbeing. The impact of these incidents has negatively affected D.K.'s academic performance - a student with a nearly perfect record," read the lawsuit. CBS News Detroit contacted Plymouth-Canton schools on Wednesday for comment, to which the district said it cannot comment on pending litigation. The Arab American Civil Rights League held a press conference in February, demanding action from the school district. The group claimed the district did not contact the student or offer resources to help her cope and that the family had not received an apology. The teen's family filed a complaint with the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, calling for accountability. The family also demanded an investigation, disciplinary action against the teacher, a public apology and mandatory diversity, equity and inclusion training. At the time, the district said it was conducting an investigation, and action was taken, including placing the teacher on leave. In a statement, school officials said they "facilitated restorative practices between the teacher and students to address any harm, foster understanding and use this as a learning moment." New Yorkers Try Each Other's Bacon Egg & Cheeses

Hello, hello! Welcome to another rendition of taste testing and judging. The dish? An infamous, often replicated (but never duplicated) NYC staple—bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. New Yorkers are always on the go, and we need a breakfast that is just as quick as our deadlines. Today we've a panel of three cooks from Harlem, Brooklyn, and Queens who are ready to put their BEC's to the test. The rules are simple—the cook with the highest combined score wins. First up is Bami repping Queens. She's used turkey bacon and flavored her eggs with garlic powder. They might just be a bit over seasoned—yikes. Paired with a Kaiser roll—a great nod to tradition. Bami decided to use pepper jack cheese and chipotle mayo. Those ingredients sure are different from the norm, we wonder how the others will feel about that unique cooking decision. D.K. from Brooklyn appreciated the Kaiser roll, and Kacee from Harlem dug the turkey bacon. It's giving "Bami cares about your sodium intake." However, both were conflicted on the chipotle mayo. We kind of agree—it may be a tad too much. "Wouldn't buy from a bodega" kind of says it all, to be honest. Bami gets a total score of 10.5. Let's move onto D.K. from BK! D.K. from BK decided to use hot honey garlic butter sauce, which automatically sounds extremely bougie. The toasted pretzel bun is even more elevated! We were digging it and immediately D.K from BK immediately lost us at "ground bacon" because is a Bacon Egg and Cheese an omelet? Bechamel sauce?! Okay, we're done, bring in the judges! BuzzFeed We just know this BE+C would go for a good $13... Harlem's Kacee was astounded at the pretzel bun. We're uncertain if the reaction is positive. Neither Harlem nor Queens messed with the pretzel bun (as expected). And there was burned egg discovered under that bechamel. Shame. D.K. with BK walked away with a total score of 12. BuzzFeed / Via Last but not least, we've got Harlem on the line! Kacee is representing with a classic BE+C on croissant bread! She's added crispy—but not burnt— bacon, scrambled eggs with just a touch of milk for fluffiness topped with cheddar cheese. Oh, yes. BuzzFeed / Via D.K. from BK was feeling the sandwich immediately, but Bami was a little more skeptical. BuzzFeed / Via There are a lot of yellow cheeses out there, sis. Cheddar is one of them. The winner of the day is Kacee, representing Uptown!
