Teagan Kavan-Caitlin Clark connection: What to know of Texas ace, basketball star

Teagan Kavan-Caitlin Clark connection: What to know of Texas ace, basketball star Show Caption Hide Caption Why Texas Tech, Texas will win 2025 WCWS It's a Lone Star State Women's College World Series this year, and reporter Jenni Carlson breaks down one reason Texas Tech will win and one reason Texas will win the WCWS. In just two years' time, Teagan Kavan has quickly written herself into being one of the top pitchers to take the circle at the Women's College World Series. The sophomore right-hander, who has been playing with a heavy heart, has helped pitch Texas softball to back-to-back WCWS championship series while posting a 2-0 record with a 0.41 ERA in three WCWS games this season. Indeed, it is the first time in program history the Longhorns have made consecutive appearances in the best-of-three championship series. REQUIRED READING: Who's in WCWS championship series? Updated bracket, scores, schedule for NCAA softball A series win against Texas Tech would put Kavan and Texas over the hump to win their first WCWS championship trophy in program history. The last team to win its first national championship in the WCWS was Florida State, in 2018. Her successes also follow a similar path to another notable athlete with whom she has ties, someone who's from the same city in Iowa, no less: former Iowa basketball star and Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. Here's what you need to know about the relationship between Kavan and Clark: What is the connection between Teagan Kavan and Caitlin Clark? The Longhorns ace and 2025 WNBA Rookie of the Year both hail from West Des Moines, Iowa. In an April 2 interview with D1Softball, Kavan mentioned she and Clark lived a few blocks away from each other and had some overlap in high school at Dowling Catholic. "It's very cool," Kavan told D1Softball. "We grew up really close to each other. "She took me to basketball practice my freshman year summer, and it's really cool we have that connection." Kavan, who didn't play softball at Dowling Catholic, said that she hasn't stayed in touch with Clark much since she went to Iowa. However, Kavan was appreciative of their connection, especially considering Clark's role in expanding the popularity of women's sports. "It's really cool to see ... everything she has done for women's sport," Kavan said. "I think it's fun we have this Iowa tie because there's a lot of Iowa pride and a lot of Midwest pride that comes out of both of us. I like representing our home state and we can show girls from Iowa and the Midwest that they can dream whatever dream they have and they can make it wherever they want to do." For her part, Clark has said she keeps tabs on Kavan. During the WCWS last season, Clark gave a shoutout to Kavan in a postgame interview following one of the Fever's games in the WNBA. "I had the women's college softball World Series on instead," Clark said after Indiana's win over the Washington Mystics in 2024. "There's a girl that pitches for Texas who's a freshman that actually lived a couple streets over from me growing up." Teagan Kavan high school Kavan played at Dowling Catholic in West Des Moines, where she was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school playing for Iowa Premier Fastpitch. Extra Innings Softball had Kavan tied for the No. 11 prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, while Perfect Game had her as the No. 5 overall prospect in its Top 50 list of 2023 recruits. Kavan committed to Texas in 2021, choosing the Longhorns over 50 other Division I programs. Teagan Kavan stats at Texas Kavan brings a 26-5 overall record and a 2.33 ERA in 192 2/3 innings of work into the WCWS championship series against Texas Tech. The 6-foot right-hander has struck out a career-high 224 batters this season, which ranks 15th in among all Division I pitchers. In Texas' WCWS semifinal win against Tennessee on Monday, Kavan scored her fourth save of the season with three scoreless innings of relief. Kavan is 2-0 in the WCWS this season, while 4-1 in six career WCWS games. Auburn softball climbs into D1Softball's top 25 after 11-0 start

Auburn softball is 11-0, and the country is beginning to take notice. After going 5-0 on opening weekend, the Tigers slid through the challenging field at the Clearwater Invitational and emerged unscathed, catching the attention of the writers at D1Softball. Auburn's 6-0 weekend, which included two wins over ranked teams, has propelled them into D1Softball's top 25 rankings; Auburn checks in this week at No. 18 after being one of three teams unranked in last week's poll. Auburn took down then-No. 9 Oklahoma State and then-No. 22 Liberty to close out its stay in Clearwater with identical 2-1 scores. A bases-loaded walk to Anna Wohlers and a solo home run by Abbey Smith- the first of her career- lifted Auburn to a win over Oklahoma State Saturday while its two-run first inning was enough to lift the Tigers over Liberty on Sunday. Auburn also snagged come-from-behind wins over Charlotte and Virginia over the weekend. Icess Tresvik and SJ Geurin earned spots on D1Softball's All-Clearwater Invitational team for their efforts in Auburn's impressive run. Tresvik hit two home runs in the Tigers' 14-11 win over Charlotte on Saturday and logged six total hits. Geurin appeared in all six games of the Clearwater Invitational, picking up wins in four of those games in the circle with a save in the win over Liberty. She allowed two earned runs and struck out nine batters. The No. 18 Tigers return to action Friday for the Rocket City Showcase at Toyota Field in Madison. Auburn will face Louisiana Tech, James Madison, North Alabama, Miami (Ohio), and Jax State as part of the action-packed weekend at the home of the Rocket City Trash Pandas. Tresvik, Peralta among college softball's top hitters from opening weekend

Auburn softball began its new era of softball under Chris and Kate Malveaux with a bang by outscoring its opening weekend opponents 44-19 en route to a perfect 5-0 weekend at the Tiger Invitational. Two key reasons for Auburn's success were seniors Icess Tresvik and Nelia Peralta. The duo combined to record 21 hits over opening weekend with three doubles, six home runs, and 18 RBI to emerge as the team's top hitters heading into week two of the season. Their success at the plate has landed them on a prestigious weekly list that includes the nation's top bats. Peralta and Tresvik were included in D1Softball's top 100 hitters of week 1 list after stellar showings at the plate last weekend. Peralta shared co-SEC Player of the Week honors with Oklahoma's Ella Parker after batting .611 with 11 hits, two doubles, three home runs, and 10 RBI with zero strikeouts in 18 at-bats. She began Auburn's comeback effort in the Tigers' 10-9 win over Appalachian State on Saturday by hitting a two-run home run in the 4th inning to cut the Mountaineers lead to 8-4. She hit another two-run shot in the 9th inning to solidify Auburn's come-from-behind victory. Tresvik hit two home runs in Auburn's 9-7 win over Southern Illinois on Saturday, one was a three-run blast that pushed Auburn to a 4-0 lead in the 3rd inning. Tresvik hit .588 on the weekend with 10 hits, three home runs, and eight RBI. Peralta and Tresvik will lead Auburn into the Clearwater Invitational this weekend, hoping to keep its unbeaten streak alive. Auburn will face Clemson on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT to begin this weekend's action at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Florida. Auburn softball grabs No. 3 seed in preseason bracketology from D1Softball

Auburn softball grabs No. 3 seed in preseason bracketology from D1Softball The SEC is projected to send all 15 teams to the postseason in 2025 according to D1Softball's preseason forecast. The SEC had a strong reputation in college softball before the addition of powers Oklahoma and Texas. Now that the Sooners and Longhorns have joined the conference, its distinction has risen even higher. Evidence can be seen in D1Softball's preseason bracketology, which forecasts all 15 SEC squads to earn a postseason bid in 2025. Auburn, who has appeared in 10 straight NCAA Tournaments, is forecasted to earn a No. 3 seed and compete in the Tucson Regional alongside Washington, Grand Canyon, and host Arizona, who was given the No. 11 overall seed. Should this projection hold up, the winner of the Tucson Regional would meet the winner of the Knoxville Regional in the Super Regional round. Host Tennessee, the projected No. 6 seed, will host Virginia, Indiana, and Dayton as part of D1Softball's preseason bracketology. Although Auburn is expected to earn a postseason bid, D1Softball believes their road to the playoffs will not be easy. Auburn is included in the "last four in" category with BYU, Wichita State, and Penn State. South Carolina is also a "bubble team" for postseason play as they are projected to enter as a low seed. Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, and Tennessee are considered "locks" for a top-eight seed, while Texas A&M, Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, and LSU have a strong shot at hosting a regional. The 2025 season begins this weekend as Auburn hosts the Tiger Invitational at Jane B. Moore Field. Auburn will face North Carolina, Appalachian State, and Southern Illinois as part of opening weekend. Florida softball ranked No. 3 in 2025 NFCA preseason coaches poll

Florida softball ranked No. 3 in 2025 NFCA preseason coaches poll The Florida softball team is poised to make a significant impact in the 2025 season, starting off ranked No. 3 in the NFCA/GoRout Division I Preseason Top 25 Coaches Poll. The Gators, who have consistently proven their talent on the diamond, trail only behind SEC opponents Texas and Oklahoma, which have secured the top two spots, respectively. Florida's ranking comes with high expectations, as they also garnered six first-place votes. This optimism is mirrored across other major polls, with Florida securing the top spot on both the Softball America and D1 Softball rankings and a respectable second place in the ESPN/USA Softball poll. The Gators are slated to face a grueling schedule, with 22 games against teams ranked in the preseason top 25, including eight of those being from the SEC. As the season unfolds, all eyes will be on this talented group of players to see if they can live up to the high expectations set by their preseason rankings and make a deep run in the pursuit of a national championship.
