Erode Corporation extends service of domestic breeding checkers for two more months
With the southwest monsoon setting in, Erode Corporation has extended the service of domestic breeding checkers (DBCs) by two more months and has allocated ₹1.01 crore towards their wages and other statutory benefits. According to the 2011 census, the city spans 109.52 and has a population of 4.98 lakh, encompassing 60 wards across four zones. There are 1,69,912 residential properties and 27,386 commercial establishments in the city. While over 1,000 conservancy workers are involved in daily solid waste management, part-time DBCs are appointed by the civic body to carry out anti-dengue operations. These workers are tasked with visiting individual households to identify and eliminate breeding grounds of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, the primary vector of dengue fever. They also educate residents and ensure that rainwater does not collect in old tyres, broken items, or unused containers. If necessary, they are required to apply repellents in and around homes. Each DBC is expected to visit 50 households a day, six days a week, working four hours a day. The civic body had appointed 436 part-time workers whose term ended on May 31, 2025. However, with the onset of the rainy season and the continued need for mosquito control, their services have been extended for June and July, or until further notice. These workers are outsourced through an agency and are paid ₹360 per day. Additionally, the civic body pays 13% towards Employee Provident Fund (EPF), 3.25% towards Employee State Insurance (ESI), and 18% as service tax. A senior Corporation official told The Hindu their services might be extended further depending on the requirements, as the monsoon was expected to continue in the State for the next five months.

DBC workers petition Vellore collector for wage hike to Rs 529 per day
VELLORE: Workers of Domestic Breeding Checker (DBC) on Monday petitioned Collector V R Subbulaxmi, requesting a wage hike from the current Rs 325 per day to Rs 529 per day, citing an order copy of district administration dated June 3, 2024. Speaking to TNIE, the workers said that around 140 DBC workers are employed across various zones in the district. Each day, they are required to visit a village or a neighbourhood and inspect at least 50 to 60 houses for dengue-breeding mosquitoes. 'We travel at least 50 kilometers a day, and we are not given any separate allowance for travel. Although buses are an option, they are often unavailable when we need them. So we end up relying on our own vehicles,' said one worker on the condition of anonymity. As a result, they spend around Rs 100 per day on petrol alone. The worker added that if the revised wage is implemented, it would help cover travel and other necessary expenses. The workers, affiliated with the Vellore Mavattam Dengue Kosu Olippu Kala Paniyarlargal Sangam, said they also spray anti-mosquito repellents and assist people who are attacked by animals. 'As dengue mosquitoes can breed in stagnant water left even inside homes for over five days, we are employed year-round. Our wages are fixed by the district administration,' another worker said. The workers said they told the collector that DBC workers in other districts receive daily wages as high as Rs 700, and urged for the revised wage in Vellore to be enforced. They said the collector assured them that the matter would be looked into.

Salem Corporation deploys 700 DBC workers to fight dengue
The Salem Corporation has intensified anti-dengue measures, and Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBC) have been deployed on daily wages across four zones in the city. The Corporation has appointed one DBC worker per 300 houses as part of its anti-dengue measures to control Aedes mosquitoes, which involve identifying and destroying mosquito breeding sources and raising public awareness. A total of 700 DBC workers were initially appointed for a three-month period from 1 January to 31 March 2025 in four zones under the Corporation's jurisdiction. With the onset of summer rains and increased water storage by residents during the season, the risk of mosquito larvae breeding in containers has heightened. To counter this, the Corporation reappointed the workers for a further 89 days, from 1 April to 28 June. The 700 DBC workers are members of the women self-help workers and earn per day ₹550, including ₹473 as daily wage and ₹77 as Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees State Insurance (ESI). Corporation officials said 100 DBC workers each have been deployed Suramangalam, Hasthampatti, Ammapet, and Kondalampatti zones, besides 70 DBC workers (14 teams) each for the Suramangalam and Hasthampatti zones and 80 DBC workers (16 teams) each for the Kondalampatti and Ammapet zones for special duty as rapid team workers and to carry out anti-dengue measures at public places, commercial establishments, government offices, and disease hot spots. So the Corporation will spend ₹83.25 lakh each for Suramangalam and Hasthampatti zones and ₹88.11 lakh for Ammapet and Kondalampatti zones. The expenditure will be drawn from the general fund belonging to the concerned zone, officials added.
