Chemotherapy training begins for Delhi doctors under PM's cancer day care centre initiative
As a part of establishing cancer day care centres announced by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during her Budget speech, the Delhi State Cancer Institute has begun training doctors from Delhi hospitals for providing chemotherapy to patients at the District Day Care Cancer Centres (DCCCs). The training is being imparted under PM's cancer day care centre initiative to four General Duty Medical Officers (GDMOs) and Nursing Officers from Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, Rao Tula Rao, Janakpuri Super Speciality Hospital and Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya Hospital. Dr Diwakar, Director, Delhi State Cancer Institute, said on Friday that this was the first such initiative in Delhi where training is being provided to doctors to provide chemotherapy for cancer day care centres. The training at Delhi State Cancer Institute is being conducted in batches over the coming months and will continue till November. According to Dr Diwakar, the move has been taken to strengthen cancer care services across the country and hands-on training on chemotherapy. He said the first batch comprises four medical officers and four nursing officers from four different DCCC centres. 'The training is designed to equip frontline healthcare professionals with essential skills in chemotherapy drug handling, patient monitoring, and clinical management, in alignment with the guidelines of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW),' he said. Dr Diwakar said the move will enhance the clinical competence of healthcare providers at the grassroots level, especially in outer areas, where early and effective cancer intervention is crucial. 'We will first stabilise the patients at our centre and from here we can transfer the patients to these day care centres where trained staff and doctors will look after the patients undergoing chemotherapy,' he said. In February, Minister Sitharaman had announced the establishment of day-care centers for cancer treatment at all district hospitals over the next three years. This initiative aims to improve access to essential cancer treatments, while also easing the heavy patient burden on large tertiary care hospitals in metropolitan cities. 'Two hundred centres will be set up in 2025-26,' Sitharaman had said.

House GOP campaign arm launches ad campaign tying NY, NJ Democrats to Mamdani
The National Republican Congressional Campaign (NRCC) is tying lawmakers in New York and New Jersey facing competitive reelection bids to Democratic New York City mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani in a new paid digital advertising campaign unveiled Friday. The campaign targets New York Democratic Reps. Laura Gillen, Tom Suozzi and Josh Riley, along with New Jersey Rep. Nellie Pou (D). The 30-second spots feature a picture of Mamdani and the lawmakers with the caption: 'Together we can raise taxes, defund the police, and build a socialist New York.' The NRCC did not specify the amount of money behind the effort, but described the buy as 'modest.' 'If Democrats had their way, Mamdani's pro-criminal, open-borders, anti-law enforcement, and antisemitic agenda would be the law of the land,' committee spokesperson Maureen O'Toole said. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) hit back Friday in a statement. 'Laura Gillen, Tom Suozzi, and Josh Riley are laser focused on delivering real solutions for their constituents, and voters in their districts aren't buying these baseless and desperate attacks,' DCCC spokesperson Riya Vashi said. 'It's clear Republicans would rather talk about who the Mayor of New York City may be than answer for their own toxic agenda because they know that slashing health care and raising costs on working families to give tax breaks to billionaires isn't exactly a winning message.' Mamdani is set to meet with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) on Friday in Brooklyn. Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have not yet endorsed Mamdani. He was in Washington on Wednesday for a closed-door breakfast hosted by progressive Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.). A number of House Democrats in attendance praised Mamdani following the event, including Reps. Robert Garcia (Calif.) and Pramila Jayapal (Wash.). This is not the first time House Republicans have sought to tie their Democratic counterparts to New York City politics. Last year, Republicans worked to tie Democrats to corruption allegations against Mayor Eric Adams, who is running for reelection as an independent. Democrats note they flipped three New York seats and reelected Ryan in the face of those attacks last year. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Healthcare staff undergo chemotherapy training for Day Care Cancer Centres
New Delhi: Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI) will begin hands-on chemotherapy training for doctors and nursing staff from Friday in a bid to set up Day Care Cancer Centres (DCCCs) across the city. The initiative is part of a national rollout announced in the Union Budget, under which 200 DCCCs are set to be established in district hospitals during 2025-26 to expand access to cancer care and reduce the load on tertiary hospitals. DSCI has been designated the nodal training centre under the Prime Minister's DCCC initiative. "This initiative aims to enhance the capacity of healthcare professionals in cancer care, focusing on safe chemotherapy drug handling, patient monitoring, and toxicity management, in line with MoHFW guidelines," said Dr Diwakar, director, DSCI. According to a health department order, 28 healthcare professionals, including general duty medical officers (GDMOs) from four govt hospitals-Janakpuri Super Speciality, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya, Rao Tula Ram, and Pt. Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital-will undergo training in four batches between July 18 and Nov 19. "This is a novel approach by the govt to decentralise cancer care," said Dr Pragya Shukla, head of clinical oncology at DSCI and in charge of the training programme. The training will include chemotherapy drug administration, monitoring, and managing treatment-related toxicities.

House Republicans' fundraising outpaces incumbent Democrats' in midterm battlegrounds
Democrats largely brushed off the Republican numbers, pointing to the role of joint fundraising committees. 'House Republicans are running scared – so they're turning to their D.C. Party Bosses to bail them out with big checks after voting for the largest cut to Medicaid and food assistance in history to pay for billionaire tax breaks,' DCCC spokesperson Viet Shelton said in a statement. Vulnerable Democratic incumbents largely put up solid fundraising numbers, but they were not as eye-popping. Among the 13 Democrats running for reelection in districts Trump won last year, Rep. Marie Glusenkamp Perez (D-Wa.) led the way with just over $900,000, while the median quarterly fundraising was $689,000. A handful of Democrats who lagged in fundraising could face bigger problems: Texas Reps. Vicente Gonzalez and Henry Cuellar, who both raised less than $500,000, are among the members the GOP hopes to squeeze in its mid-cycle redistricting effort, which could make their seats even more difficult for Democrats to hold. Cuellar loaned his campaign $200,000, according to his FEC report. But there's still plenty of time for Democrats to catch up, and they point to strong fundraising by Democratic challengers to Republican incumbents as a positive sign. For instance, Rebecca Cooke, who is challenging Rep. Derrick Van Orden (R-Wisc.), raised $938,000 and had more than $1.2 million on hand. Van Orden raised $1.2 million and had nearly $1.7 million cash. 'They've got a [joint fundraising agreement] that Mike Johnson raised for them. They didn't raise it themselves, and they didn't raise it from individual donors,' said purple-district Rep. Susie Lee (D-Nev.). 'I don't worry that we're not going to have the resources to compete with a very unpopular party.' Meanwhile, several Republicans that Democrats are targeting in Trumpier districts pulled in relatively low fundraising totals — Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) raised just $53,000, Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio) brought in $142,000 and Rep. Cory Mills (R-Fla.) brought in $253,000. They each hold districts that Trump won by between 5 and 18 points last year, but Democrats still see them as worth targeting, anticipating voter backlash to Trump's domestic policy agenda.
