Halt gold mine ops pending new Environmental Impact Assessment

Published on: Monday, June 02, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 02, 2025 Text Size: Sarifuddin (left) and the collapsed embankment of a retention pond at the gold mine caused waste water including sodium cyanide to overflow into a nearby river. TAWAU: Merotai assemblyman Sarifuddin Hata urged the State Government to immediately halt the operations of Wullersdorf Resources Sdn Bhd (WRSB)'s gold mining activities until a new Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report is released. This call follows a recent incident involving a suspected toxic spill of sodium cyanide-contaminated water from a retention pond, which overflowed into nearby worker quarters—a situation captured in a 1-minute 20-second video that went viral. Sarifuddin described the collapse of the pond's embankment as a serious incident that threatens the health and safety of nearby communities and raises concerns about the environmental impact on surrounding flora and fauna. 'We've been informed that this is not the first time such a breach has occurred at the gold mining site. The issue only came to light recently due to the viral video,' he told Daily Express. Geoparks must embrace people: Expert

Published on: Sunday, May 25, 2025 Published on: Sun, May 25, 2025 By: Sisca Humphrey Text Size: Vice President of the Global Geoparks Network, Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Ibrahim Komoo Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia's geoparks are undergoing a bold transformation to reposition themselves as platforms for sustainable regional development, said Prof Emeritus Datuk Dr Ibrahim Komoo, Vice President of the Global Geoparks Network (GGN). In his keynote presentation, Prof Ibrahim said that the transformation of geoparks in Malaysia is rooted in five core areas. The first area, cooperative governance, involves a shift from a top-down, authoritative model to a more inclusive and participatory system. 'The management of geoparks must move away from an authoritative model to one that is more cooperative and inclusive,' he said during the Malaysian Geopark Network Conference here, on Thursday. Sandakan SPCA is unable to cope, desperate for aid

Published on: Friday, May 23, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 23, 2025 By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: The overpopulated SPCA Sandakan shelter. SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA Sandakan) is facing an unprecedented crisis as its shelter reaches breaking point with over 800 dogs in desperate need of care. The non-profit organisation, which operates solely on public donations, is now launching an ambitious 12 month sterilisation programme and urgently appealing for financial and material assistance. Since its founding in 2012, SPCA Sandakan has been a refuge for stray and abandoned dogs, stepping in to provide humane care after the local council ended its controversial shoot-to-kill policy. However, the shelter's capacity has been pushed to the limit, what was once a manageable population of 350 dogs has now exploded to 828, with new arrivals coming in daily. Jail and fine now for illegal carbon projects

Published on: Friday, May 23, 2025 Published on: Fri, May 23, 2025 By: David Thien Text Size: Application would go through the Sabah Forestry Department's Chief Conservator of Forest prior to submission for approval by the Sabah Cabinet. - FMT pic PENAMPANG: The Sabah Government is now focused on carbon trading, but not yet on the natural capital beneficial aspect, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan. Some clarity has emerged from the recent State Legislative Assembly session as it was stated that all carbon trading activities in Sabah now require mandatory licensing, following amendments to the Forest Enactment 1968 to regulate such activities. Now, anyone carrying out carbon projects in Sabah without a licence can be fined between RM100,000 and RM5 million and jailed up to five years, or both. Offenders can be ordered to pay up to 10 times the amount of fees or royalties owed, or up to 10 times the value of any forest produce involved, or any other charges due. The amendment on Part IIIB of the Forest Carbon Activity outlines that only those with written approval from the Sabah Cabinet can receive a licence, which will come with certain conditions and fees. The Dusun Labuk are predominantly found in Beluran and Telupid districts.
