Make RTI a tool to fight corruption: SIC

Mangaluru: State information commissioner Badruddin K said there must be transparency in governance and a corruption-free environment, which is the purpose behind the implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Act. He was speaking after presenting the Pa Go (Padyana Gopalakrishna) Award 2024, instituted by the Dakshina Kannada District Working Journalists Association (DKDWJA), to journalist Rajesh Shetty Dota, at a ceremony held at the Mangaluru Press Club on Saturday. "The RTI and other similar Acts should not be misused. The RTI Act is a tool for journalists and the public to combat corruption. The cooperation of media is essential to ensure a corruption-free administration," he said. Stating that there is a need for reports that have a positive impact on society, he said the challenges of journalism have evolved over time, especially with the advancement of technology. "Remembering veteran journalists like Padyana Gopalakrishna is crucial for younger journalists, as they should be considered true guides," he said. Rajesh Shetty Dota, the recipient of the award, spoke about reporting on issues he observed in rural areas, which led to road construction for the local people, bringing him satisfaction. The award amount of Rs 10,000 was donated for the education of tribal children in Morantebailu. Vishwanath Jogi from the department of information & public relations was honoured on the occasion of his retirement.
