Punjab, K-P police boost border security

With growing security concerns in the border regions of Punjab and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP), authorities have ramped up coordination between the two provinces to combat terrorism, smuggling, and cross-border criminal activity. Mianwali, Punjab's last district before the KP border, shares boundaries with districts such as Lakki Marwat, Bannu, Kohat, and Dera Ismail Khan. Its strategic location and mountainous terrain have long posed challenges, enabling outlaws and militants to slip into KP, where they often evade Punjab police jurisdiction. The cultural and linguistic ties between residents of Mianwali — especially in Tehsil Isa Khel — and neighbouring KP districts are deep-rooted. Many families here speak Pashto and have ancestral connections across the provincial border, with a significant portion of the population originally migrating from KP. The recent wave of terrorist incidents in Bannu, Waziristan, and Lakki Marwat has had ripple effects in Mianwali. In response, local police intensified operations, reportedly killing 30 foreign terrorists while tragically losing one police officer in the line of duty. Recognising the critical security situation, Inspector General of KP Police Zulfiqar Hameed visited Mianwali and inspected several key checkpoints along the border, including Dara Tang, Qabulwala, Chachali Patrol Post, and the mountainous regions of Makarwal, Mullakhel, Karandi, and Baba Khassa Shrine. These locations are considered high-risk transit routes for militants and fugitives. The visit included high-level briefings and a security meeting where both provinces discussed strategies to improve cross-border coordination and fortify joint security measures. Also present were senior officials including RPO Kohat Jawad Khan, RPO Bannu Sajjad Khan, DPOs of Karak and Lakki Marwat, and officers from Mianwali's investigation unit. In a bid to restore public confidence, police have increased visibility in high-risk areas. RPO Sargodha now visits border regions twice weekly, while DPO Mianwali makes frequent trips to police stations and outposts. Local tribal elders and community leaders have also been engaged through jirgas, strengthening community-police ties. A robust patrolling system is now in place, and under the leadership of DPO Capt (retd) Rai Ajmal, flag marches have been conducted to assert police presence and deter criminal activity. These efforts have not only reassured local residents but also helped create a strong social resistance against foreign militants. Many retired military personnel and peace-loving Pashto-speaking residents in these border areas are reportedly acting as the first line of defence, rejecting the presence of any external threats. In a telling anecdote, a police reader once remarked that despite Mianwali's highly sensitive geographic position, it has remained relatively secure even when terrorism was rampant in places like Peshawar and Islamabad.

Second suspect in Hafizabad gang-rape incident killed

The gang-rape case has taken another turn as a second suspect, identified as Laeeq, was killed in an alleged police encounter near Kot Nanak village on Friday. Meanwhile, two police officials have been arrested for allegedly accepting a bribe to facilitate Laeeq's earlier release from custody. Police sources said the officers from Kassoki police station were on routine patrol when their vehicle came under fire from three to four armed men near Kot Nanak. Police returned fire in self-defence. During the exchange, one assailant was fatally shot — reportedly by gunfire from his own accomplices, who managed to flee. The deceased was later identified as Laeeq, one of the suspects in the gang-rape of a woman in front of her husband. Laeeq's body was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for autopsy, and police have registered a case against the unidentified attackers for assaulting law enforcement personnel. This development follows the death of another accused, Khawar, in a similar encounter just a day earlier. Despite these operations, two main suspects — Ikram Mangat and Chand Mangat — remain at large. Legal Inspector Muneeb Mangat, posted at the District Police Officer (DPO) office, and Kashif Warraich, in charge of the Hameed Pura police check post, have been charged with accepting a bribe of Rs140,000 in exchange for facilitating Laeeq's escape from legal custody.

Police office staff gets no relief in POSH Act probe in Tamil Nadu

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has refused to quash disciplinary proceedings initiated against a section superintendent in Madurai District Police Office (DPO) in 2020 for allegedly sexually harassing two women colleagues. Justice B Pugalendhi passed the order recently while disposing of a petition filed by the section superintendent challenging the charge memo and the appointment of inquiry officer. The petitioner contended that according to the complainants, the alleged incident was said to have taken place in 2006 but the complaints were lodged only in 2019 and were therefore hit by limitation under section 9 of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013. Justice Pugalendhi pointed out that one of the victims had stated in her complaint that the petitioner continuously harassed her since 2006 and thus, the complaint is not barred by limitation. He also observed that the petitioner's apprehensions regarding the inquiry officer were unwarranted.

The market holds enormous potential: by 2030, volumes of over €10 trillion are expected. In Europe , there is an annual funding gap of €800 billion that NYALA aims to close. Already, over 5,000 investors and issuers from six EU countries trust the platform. Collector Venkateswar seeks Swarna Andhra - Swachh Andhra campaign boost

Tirupati: Collector Dr S Venkateswar has directed concerned officials to ensure the effective implementation of the Swarna Andhra and Swachh Andhra programmes across the district, while also taking stringent precautionary measures in view of the ongoing summer heat. In a teleconference held on Friday, the Collector discussed the status of the flagship campaigns and the preparedness of departments in tackling summer conditions. The meeting was attended by Tirupati Municipal Commissioner N Mourya, District Panchayat Officer (DPO) Suseela Devi, MPDOs, Tahsildars, and officials from other related departments. During the interaction, Dr Venkateswar stressed the need to set up and maintain 'Chalivendras' (drinking water kiosks), shaded shelters, and shade nets across all regions to help people cope with rising temperatures. While there has been some respite in weather conditions, the Collector cautioned that heatstroke remains a threat and public awareness campaigns must be carried out to prevent such incidents. The Collector instructed officials to prioritise high-footfall areas for the application of white cool paints and to implement rooftop gardening on government buildings. Shade nets should be installed at busy traffic junctions, and temporary shelters should be erected at places frequently visited by the public. Special attention must be paid to children and the elderly, with awareness drives and health camps aimed at preventing heat-related illnesses. Municipal Commissioner N Mourya reported that shaded shelters, water kiosks, and shade nets had already been set up in many areas under municipal limits. He assured that remaining localities would soon be covered and added that awareness sessions on rooftop gardens and plantation drives are being planned for local secretaries. DPO Suseela Devi highlighted the distress caused to birds and animals due to lack of drinking water, noting bird deaths observed in some areas. She suggested placing clay water pots in parks and temples to ensure hydration for animals during the summer.
