An 18-year-old man was arrested following a fatal UTV crash involving a teen girl in Oregon, deputies and news outlets reported. The crash happened after midnight Sunday, May 18, on Sauvie Island, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Ayden Heard was driving an off-road vehicle on private property with Ava Crews when they crashed and rolled,KPTV reported. The teen girl died at the scene, deputies said. Heard was taken to a hospital for evaluation then booked into jail on suspicion of manslaughter, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and DUII charges, according to jail records. He has since been released after posting bail, which was set at $50,000. Heard plead not guilty to the charges during a Monday, May 20, court hearing, KATU reported. During the hearing, the teen girl's mom made a statement. 'We wish we were not writing these words and want you to know she was everything someone could hope for in a daughter, a truly beautiful soul,' Brooke Crews said, as reported by KPTV. 'While our hearts are broken for our daughter, our hearts are also broken for Ayden and his family.' 'We are pleading with this court not to ruin Ayden's life. He will suffer enough, and it will not bring our daughter back, and in fact, it is not something she would have wanted, and it would tarnish her memory,' the news outlet reported the mom saying in court. Ava Crews was 17 years old and a student at Scappoose High School, KGW8 reported. Sauvie Island is about a 20-mile drive northwest from Portland. PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland-area law enforcement has ramped up DUII missions this St. Patrick's Day weekend, already resulting in multiple arrests and nearly 200 citations. Since the high-visibility DUII enforcement missions began Friday evening, early statistics from that night show 260 traffic stops were conducted, 172 traffic citations were issued and 11 people were arrested. Of those arrested, seven drivers were impaired, police said. How the Shamrock Run will affect Portland traffic PPB says they hope their multi-agency Metro Area Traffic Enforcement Collaboration will aid in the effort to 'reduce fatal and serious injury crashes.' During last year's DUII enforcement effort, 75 arrests were made and 950 citations were issued in connection to speeding, impaired driving and distracted driving, officials said. To help curb impaired driving, the Portland Bureau of Transportation is also on taxi, Lyft and Uber rides. With less than a month to finalize a deal, patients like Mike Ashland are left in uncertainty as talks drag on. For Ashland, the struggle started in 2007. The avid runner began feeling constantly fatigued, even from simple tasks. It was later discovered that half of his heart muscle had been damaged by a massive heart attack. 'I was pretty close to death,' Ashland recalls. After the heart attack, Ashland underwent intense treatments, including being defibrillated internally. 'Being defibrillated inside your body is like having a stallion kick you from inside,' he said, referring to the procedure he endured multiple times. Aged out of eligibility for a heart transplant, Ashland now relies on an internal pacemaker to survive. DUII missions ramped up for St. Patrick's Day For the last 18 years, he has made the trek from Silverton to OHSU in Portland for treatment at least once a month. But with just weeks to go, the uncertainty of the is leaving patients like Ashland in limbo. OHSU operates a network of hospitals and clinics, including those branded under OHSU, Adventist, and Tuality, which includes Hillsboro Medical Center. However, negotiations with United Healthcare, which began last year, have not yet resulted in a final deal. OHSU has stopped booking appointments beyond March. 'I'm not going to use any of the words I'd like to use to describe this,' Ashland said, expressing his frustration. 'To start from scratch somewhere could probably kill me.' Now, Ashland is scrambling for new insurance as his last appointment looms on the 28th. Washington County to address $20.5M budget shortfall In statements, OHSU said the negotiations aim to cut costs and improve care. But United Healthcare has criticized OHSU for making little progress and demanding unsustainable price hikes. Ashland said he's caught in the middle with 75,000 other patients. Ashland emphasized that the next few weeks are critical. 'These next couple of weeks, three weeks, for healthcare for me, it's not exaggeration to say it's live or die,' he said. The Portland Police Bureau announced they are teaming up with other state, county and local law enforcement partners, similar to . The high-visibility DUII enforcement missions will begin Friday evening and will last through Tuesday morning, the day after the St. Patrick's holiday. 'Law enforcement partners involved in the missions aim to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes by focusing on the SOLID enforcement priorities: Speed, Occupant Safety, Lane Usage, Impaired Driving, and Distracted Driving.' During last year's DUII enforcement effort, 75 arrests were made and 950 citations were issued in connection to speeding, impaired driving, and distracted driving, officials said.
